Higher Ground Productions, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, announced a wide-ranging Netflix slate in 2021—spanning fiction, documentaries, series, and family programming. The projects were at different stages of development, and Netflix called every title a working title, so the announcement was a pipeline rather than a promise that every project would reach the screen. In 2024, Netflix said the partnership had been extended through a multi-year first-look deal for film and television.
What the 2021 Netflix announcement included
Netflix’s February 5, 2021 announcement grouped Higher Ground projects across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s and family entertainment. It described the titles as being at different stages of development and intended for release over several years. The list therefore captured a slate in progress, not a confirmed release calendar.
Barack and Michelle Obama said, “We created Higher Ground to tell great stories,” Netflix said in its 2021 announcement.
Films in development
- Exit West: An adaptation of Mohsin Hamid’s novel.
- Satellite: A science-fiction film written by Ola Shokunbi.
- Tenzing: A film about Tenzing Norgay and his connection with Sir Edmund Hillary.
- The Young Wife: A film written and directed by Tayarisha Poe.
Series and family projects
- Firekeeper’s Daughter: A series based on Angeline Boulley’s novel.
- Great National Parks: A natural-history series.
- Ada Twist, Scientist: Listed by Netflix as recently announced, in the children’s and family slate.
- The G Word with Adam Conover: Also listed as recently announced; based on Michael Lewis’s The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy.
All titles in the 2021 slate were identified as working titles. That qualification matters: being named in a development announcement does not establish that a project was completed or released.

How the slate built on Higher Ground’s first Netflix projects
Netflix announced its original multi-year production agreement with the Obamas on May 21, 2018, saying they had established Higher Ground Productions to create content for the service. Its initial slate, announced in April 2019, ranged across fiction and nonfiction, scripted and unscripted work, documentaries, features, and family programming.
- American Factory and Crip Camp
- Bloom
- An adaptation of David W. Blight’s Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom
- An adaptation of the Overlooked obituary column
- Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents
- The Fifth Risk
Barack Obama described the intended range of that work: “Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect, and inspire us all.” Michelle Obama added, “We think there’s something here for everyone—moms and dads, curious kids, and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day.” Both statements appeared in Netflix’s 2019 slate announcement.

What Netflix said about the partnership in 2024
On June 13, 2024, Netflix said Higher Ground had extended its relationship with the service through a multi-year first-look deal covering the company’s film and television projects. Netflix’s announcement also noted that Higher Ground had a first-look podcast deal with Audible. These are the terms Netflix reported in that announcement; they do not disclose confidential contract details or establish whether terms have changed since.
Vinnie Malhotra, Higher Ground’s president, said, “From the beginning, Netflix has championed our projects, helping them flourish and reach millions across the world.” Netflix also reported that Leave the World Behind reached fifth place on its Most Popular Films list and recorded 121 million views in just over three weeks after its premiere. That is Netflix’s historical figure reported in 2024, not a current ranking or view count.

How to read the announced slate alongside Netflix’s catalog
Netflix’s Higher Ground collection page displays a snapshot of titles associated with the company, including Leave the World Behind, Fatherhood, Starting 5, The Later Daters, Our Great National Parks, Becoming, American Factory, American Symphony, Working: What We Do All Day, Crip Camp, and The G Word with Adam Conover. The collection is a useful way to browse titles shown there, but it is not a complete production-credit database and should not be treated as a record of every project ever announced.
For viewers choosing what to explore, the clearest distinctions are format, subject, and source material: feature films versus series; fiction versus documentary or other nonfiction; and projects adapted from books or other works. The announcements offer no official quality ranking. Readers interested in the literary connections can look to Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West, Angeline Boulley’s Firekeeper’s Daughter, and Michael Lewis’s The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy, which Netflix explicitly linked to slate projects.
