Cloud hosting for a 24/7 YouTube stream can cost more than the virtual machine alone—but not every cloud stream incurs a bill for each YouTube viewer. The total depends on what the service actually does: keep an encoder running, retain files, transfer a feed to YouTube, or distribute playback itself. YouTube handles viewer transcoding and playback delivery for streams sent to YouTube, so a cloud-to-YouTube setup should not be priced like a separate viewer-distribution network.
What costs can make up a cloud-streaming bill?
“Cloud service” can describe several different architectures, and their meters are not interchangeable. A virtual machine looping or encoding video, a managed live-encoding service, a relay subscription, and a full streaming platform that delivers video to viewers can each have different charges.
- Compute or channel time: A virtual machine may be billed while it is running. A managed encoder may bill for active channel hours instead.
- Storage: Disks attached to a virtual machine and retained archive files can add charges, even if the stream itself is inexpensive to run.
- Data transfer: Check which traffic crosses the provider’s network and what the provider bills for. A feed sent from a cloud encoder to YouTube is different from a service that relays playback to viewers.
- Subscriptions and add-ons: Relay services and cloud tools may charge a subscription, or charge extra for features, channels, destinations, or outputs.
- Operations: Continuous availability may require monitoring, a recovery plan, or an independent archive. Those requirements can carry costs beyond the headline hosting rate.
Do you pay cloud bandwidth for every YouTube viewer?
Not just because you send an encoded feed from a cloud VM to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live input into different output formats so viewers can watch across devices and networks. In a cloud-to-YouTube setup, YouTube handles that viewer-facing transcoding and playback distribution; do not add per-viewer delivery charges to the VM estimate unless your chosen provider actually carries viewer playback.
The distinction matters when comparing architectures. A service that sends one feed into YouTube has a different traffic path from a platform that packages video and serves it directly to viewers. Price the path you will use, not a larger streaming stack you do not need.

What do published cloud examples show—and not show?
| Published figure | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud’s listed f1-micro default on-demand row: $0.0076 per hour (price table accessed 2026-10-03) | One specific Compute Engine machine row. Google Cloud notes that price depends on region and configuration. | A universal price for a live-stream host. A real workload may need a different machine, disk, network performance, or region. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API: billed on demand for active channel hours, with rates varying by input and output resolution | A managed live-encoding service with an active-time meter. | A single rate applicable to every resolution or channel. The reviewed guidance does not give one universal total. |
| AWS example: $69.74 per hour for a one-hour live event with 1,000 viewers; $67.24 per hour of that is CloudFront distribution (documentation accessed 2026-10-03) | AWS’s illustrated full live-streaming architecture, including viewer distribution. | A quote for a cloud VM sending a feed to YouTube. YouTube handles its own viewer playback distribution, so this AWS example should not be applied to that different path. |
These are provider-specific published examples, not market averages or a like-for-like comparison. Cloud rates change and depend on region, configuration, and architecture; check the provider’s current pricing for your actual deployment before budgeting.

How to estimate the cost of your own always-on stream
- Draw the delivery path. Identify whether the source is a cloud VM encoding or looping a prerecorded video, a physical encoder, or a managed live-encoding service. Mark whether the provider sends only a feed into YouTube or also serves playback to viewers.
- Count channels and outputs. Record how many channels will be active, how many output resolutions are required, and how many destinations receive the stream. Managed encoding rates can vary by input and output resolution.
- Choose the actual infrastructure. Identify the required VM type, region, attached disk, and network performance. A low-cost example machine may not meet the workload’s needs.
- Estimate operating hours. Calculate expected VM uptime or active channel hours for the billing period. Use the provider’s current rate for the specific resource and region rather than multiplying a sample rate into a universal monthly quote.
- Add storage and transfer that apply. Include attached disks, retained archives, and data transfer that really crosses the provider’s billable path. Do not include viewer-delivery costs unless that provider distributes the playback.
- Add service fees and operational provisions. Include subscriptions or add-ons, plus an allowance for monitoring, recovery, and archive backup if uninterrupted streaming matters.
Compare options using monthly cost at your expected operating hours, output resolution and count, destinations, included storage and bandwidth, failover, archive capability, and who monitors or restarts the stream. There is no established cheapest configuration or universal monthly total: those depend on the chosen service and workload.
Plan for an archive separately
A live stream should not be your only copy of a recording that matters. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, arrange a local or independent archive, storage, and monitoring rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive alone.

What a cloud relay subscription covers
YouTube describes cloud-service encoders as sending one high-quality live stream to a service that distributes it to destinations. Its guidance notes that these services often require subscriptions, although some have no-cost plans and paid feature tiers. A subscription may therefore be a separate cost from cloud compute, but what it replaces or includes varies by provider. Check the actual channel, destination, storage, bandwidth, and recovery terms rather than assuming that “cloud” means one all-inclusive bill.
