Susan Bennett is widely identified as the original American voice of Siri—but Apple has never publicly confirmed that attribution. The veteran voice actor recorded speech material for a ScanSoft project in 2005, years before Siri debuted on the iPhone. She says she did not know those recordings would become associated with Apple’s assistant.
The voice that sounded familiar
After Siri arrived on the iPhone 4S in October 2011, a colleague contacted Atlanta-area voice actor Susan Bennett with a question: was that her voice coming from the new phone? Bennett listened and recognized it as her own. The recordings she had made years earlier for a speech project appeared to have found an unexpected afterlife in one of technology’s most recognizable interfaces.
The careful answer is that Bennett is the best-supported identification of the original American English Siri voice. She identified herself publicly in 2013; her account was supported by GM Voices, the company involved in the recording work, and by an audio comparison commissioned by CNN. Apple and Nuance did not publicly confirm her identity. WSB-TV’s contemporary report and TechSpot’s account of the reporting describe that distinction.
A working voice actor before Siri
Bennett had spent years doing the kind of work that made a speech-recording assignment familiar: commercial voice-overs and voices for telephone, transportation, GPS, and other automated systems. Her voice was also heard in Delta airport terminals. That public-facing work is part of why CNN was able to find and interview her; it is also a reminder that the voice of an automated system often comes from a working actor whose name listeners may never see.

What she recorded in 2005
Contemporary reports say Bennett signed a contract with ScanSoft in June 2005 and recorded through GM Voices. The job was described as building a speech-construction database, not as recording lines for an announced Apple product. During July, she reportedly spent roughly four hours a day reading lists of phrases, sentences, and speech fragments—some of them nonsensical. MacRumors’ 2013 report outlines the contract and timing; TechSpot also recounts the sessions.
This distinction matters: Bennett did not sit down and read every answer Siri might give. The recordings supplied reusable pieces of speech. In the concatenative synthesis associated with the original system, software could select and join recorded units—such as sounds, syllables, or other fragments—to produce new phrases. The output could sound like a continuous voice, even though no actor was speaking each response live. This was an earlier speech-synthesis approach, not modern neural voice generation or a system that had Bennett record every possible sentence.
The reported sequence is ScanSoft, GM Voices, and Bennett’s recording work. It does not establish that Apple directly hired Bennett for a Siri session. The recordings date to 2005; Siri became an iPhone feature six years later, with the iPhone 4S launch on October 4, 2011.

How the identification became public
Bennett says she first suspected the connection in October 2011, after her colleague prompted her to listen closely. She did not come forward publicly until October 4, 2013. A source of confusion in the meantime was a 2013 Verge feature that some readers took to mean that voice actor Allison Dufty was Siri. Dufty denied being Siri’s voice, and the confusion reportedly helped prompt Bennett to speak publicly. MacRumors summarized the mix-up and Bennett’s public identification.
The case for Bennett rests on several distinct kinds of evidence, not an Apple credit:
- Bennett’s own account: She said she recognized her voice in Siri.
- Industry corroboration: Marcus Graham, then CEO of GM Voices, supported her identification.
- Audio comparison: CNN consulted audio-forensics expert Ed Primeau, who reportedly judged the recordings a “100% match.” That is his reported assessment in CNN’s comparison—not an Apple certification or a universal scientific standard.
- No public company confirmation: Contemporary reports said Apple and Nuance did not confirm the attribution.
Taken together, this makes Bennett the strongest reported candidate for the original U.S. voice. But it is more accurate to say she is “widely credited” or “widely identified” than to say Apple officially confirmed her. The distinction is small in casual conversation and important in a factual account.

Was Bennett the voice of Siri forever?
No. Bennett’s claim concerns the original American English voice heard by early U.S. Siri users, not every Siri voice in every language or every later release. Contemporary reporting noted that iOS 7, released September 18, 2013, introduced a different or refined U.S. Siri voice. That means “the current voice of Siri” is not a safe description of Bennett; “the original American Siri voice” is the more precise one. MacRumors covered the reported change around iOS 7.
Siri’s voices also vary by language and region. Identifying Bennett with the original American English voice does not identify the people or recording systems behind other localized voices.
Why the story still resonates
Bennett’s story is striking because an ordinary professional recording job became culturally iconic without her knowing its eventual destination. Her sessions were meant to contribute material to a speech database; years later, listeners encountered a synthetic assistant assembled from recorded human speech. The episode makes visible a part of consumer technology that can otherwise seem impersonal: real actors provide the raw material, while software shapes how that material is heard.
It also raises lasting questions about credit, consent, and the future use of recorded voices. In Bennett’s case, the available accounts support her description of the assignment as a general speech-construction project, but they do not establish all the contractual terms or settle every question about how the recordings were licensed. The most reliable conclusion stays within the evidence: Bennett recorded speech material in 2005, later recognized the original American Siri voice as hers, and received substantial professional and audio-analysis corroboration—while Apple never publicly confirmed the identification.
