Heidi Gardner’s eight-season run on Saturday Night Live ended after the show’s 50th season. Although early reports did not explain her departure, Gardner later said she had “ended up getting cut.” She has described the kind of character-driven show she hopes to make, and she has taken on acting work since leaving SNL—but no new series has been announced.
Why did Heidi Gardner leave SNL?
Gardner joined Saturday Night Live for Season 43 in 2017 and left after eight seasons. She was promoted to repertory player in 2019. When her departure was reported in August 2025 amid changes to the cast, NBC declined to comment, and the circumstances were not established publicly. TheWrap’s August 2025 report covered the exit and her tenure.

Gardner later addressed the decision on Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast. As reported by The Daily Beast on February 2, 2026, she said, “I mean, I like, I ended up getting cut, so I feel like, more than anyone in the world.” That later account clarifies that she did not leave entirely by choice, though it does not establish every detail of how the cast decision was made.
Before her exit, Gardner also spoke about the strain of repeating the fast-paced sketch process. In a February 2025 conversation with Craig Ferguson, she described occasional “sketch fatigue” or “idea fatigue,” while emphasizing that she still loved playing characters. LateNighter’s report on that interview includes her comments about the work and her creative ambitions.

What does Heidi Gardner want to do next?
Gardner has said she would like to build a show around a character and a world she could explore, with herself both starring and writing. In the Craig Ferguson interview, she put it this way: “I’d love to have a show that I co-star in and co-write, and it’s a character and it’s a world.” That is an expressed creative goal, not confirmation that a series has been commissioned or entered production.
The distinction matters: her ambition points toward the kind of work she wants to pursue, but the reporting available here does not establish a new long-term project. Her next chapter is therefore an open transition rather than a publicly announced replacement for SNL.

What work has Gardner done after SNL?
In January 2026, Gardner was appearing in the Broadway production All Out, according to Parade’s January 26, 2026 report. The report also described her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she jokingly pitched herself as a supportive “big sister” presence for Kansas City Chiefs players. That was a comic pitch, not a formal football-related job announcement.
These are concrete post-SNL activities, but they do not yet amount to a confirmed long-term television project. Gardner’s stated interest in creating a character-led show remains separate from the acting engagement reported for All Out.
What defined Gardner’s SNL run?
Gardner joined the cast in 2017, became a repertory player in 2019, and remained through eight seasons. LateNighter reported that she appeared in 159 episodes and that her final sketch as a cast member was her 600th on the show; those figures are reported by that outlet. Its August 2025 departure report also recapped her run and earlier statements about what she hoped to do next.
Her comments about fatigue and her affection for character work are not contradictory: Gardner said she still enjoyed inhabiting characters even as she sometimes found the sketch cycle tiring. Her stated goal of co-writing and co-starring in a defined world suggests a pivot in format and creative control, not a rejection of character comedy.
