In 2007, as Blu-ray and HD DVD competed to become the standard for high-definition movies, New Medium Enterprises (NME) promoted a third option: HD VMD, or Versatile Multilayer Disc. It promised 1080p video and cheaper red-laser hardware by adding layers to DVD-like discs. The format was technically plausible, but a low player price could not compensate for its small catalog, limited industry backing and late arrival.
What was HD VMD?
HD VMD was a proprietary optical-disc platform proposed by London-based NME for high-definition movies and, more broadly, software, games and institutional data storage. Rather than use the shorter blue-violet laser found in Blu-ray and HD DVD, it used a red laser and a multilayer design derived from DVD manufacturing concepts. NME argued that reusing familiar manufacturing infrastructure could reduce disc and player costs. The launch-era technical and commercial case was largely the company’s own positioning, not an independent demonstration that HD VMD could compete on price, quality or support at scale.
Using a red laser did not make HD VMD discs playable in ordinary DVD players. The added layers and format-specific optics, firmware, decoding and content-protection requirements called for a compatible HD VMD player. Nor did shared video codecs make the discs compatible with Blu-ray or HD DVD hardware.
What did NME promise?
NME’s pitch combined a lower-cost production path with high-definition specifications. Its launch material claimed capacity of up to 30 GB per side, video output up to 1080p and a maximum video bitrate of 40 Mbps. The capacity figure was a stated maximum, not a description of every retail disc; other summaries describe a four-layer configuration with 20 GB. NME also discussed a possible capacity of up to 200 GB using a blue laser, but that was a future, conditional proposition rather than a consumer product. Contemporary industry coverage repeated the company’s capacity and market claims.

NME announced the ML622S and ML777S players. Launch-era material listed prices around $175–$199, with the ML777S promoted at a suggested retail price of $199; U.S. shipping coverage likewise cited a $199 player price. These were historical launch-era figures, not current prices. The ML777S was reported to include USB ports and a memory-card reader. NME promoted playback of standard DVDs with upscaling as well as native 1080p output for HD VMD material. Those were advertised player capabilities, not independent test results. The U.S. shipping announcement describes the product’s market entry.
How did the formats compare on paper?
The figures below are launch-era specifications and commonly cited format ceilings, not evidence that every disc reached those limits or that one format always produced a better picture.

The 40 Mbps figure gave HD VMD a higher cited ceiling than HD DVD’s 36 Mbps, but a ceiling is not a typical encode or a picture-quality score. The result on screen depends on the source master, codec implementation, compression choices, authoring, player processing and display. NME’s suggestion that its bitrate could yield a sharper image described a possibility, not a universal result. A contemporary technical summary also describes reported audio and codec support.

H.264 support appears in player documentation or promotional descriptions, but should not be taken to mean every player or disc supported it in the same way. Shared codec names did not confer physical-disc, menu or copy-protection compatibility across formats.

What movies could buyers find?
HD VMD’s software lineup was much thinner than its technical pitch. Contemporary reporting described a catalog weighted toward international, independent, cult, classic and niche titles, rather than a broad selection of major Hollywood releases. Named titles in launch-era coverage included Apocalypto, The Queen, Blade, Lucky Number Slevin, The Passion of the Christ, Pulp Fiction, Alexander, Saw, Mother Ghost and Cutting Room, alongside international and Bollywood releases. The presence of a title in announcements does not establish wide retail distribution. Contemporary coverage of the launch noted the shortage of titles as a central weakness.
NME-related material cited “nearly 4,000” titles, but that number should not be read as 4,000 readily available U.S. HD VMD movies. It may have included announced, international or distributor-associated titles, rather than released films obtainable through U.S. retail channels. The title-count claim appeared in promotional industry coverage; contemporary reporting also questioned the breadth of the practical catalog. BetaNews highlighted the lack of broad major-studio backing, with SME Entertainment described as a prominent listed partner.

Why was a cheaper player not enough?
A disc format needs a reinforcing ecosystem: buyers want hardware that can play appealing films, studios want a meaningful installed base before committing releases, and retailers stock products when both supply and demand look credible. HD VMD entered without the major-studio support and distribution reach that could have helped solve this coordination problem. Even if its manufacturing approach reduced costs, a bargain player was poor value to someone unable to find the films they wanted.
- Hardware: Buyers needed a separate HD VMD player; it could not replace a Blu-ray or HD DVD player for those libraries.
- Content: A small, uneven catalog made it hard to justify investing in another format.
- Distribution: Announced sales channels and partnerships were not the same as dependable, broad retail and rental availability.
- Support: A new proprietary platform needed authoring, replication, copy-protection, firmware and repair support over time.
- Audio: Reported limits on lossless-audio formats weakened its pitch to some home-theater buyers.
Consumers had reason to hesitate: buying an HD VMD player meant taking on another incompatible library and uncertain future support. A standard DVD player’s red laser did not make it a fallback HD VMD player, and the use of a codec such as VC-1 did not make an HD VMD disc readable in an HD DVD or Blu-ray machine.

Why did the timing work against HD VMD?
HD VMD arrived around 2007–08, when consumers, studios and retailers were already watching the Blu-ray and HD DVD contest. Both rivals had established hardware, content partners and retail presence. Buyers were waiting for the existing conflict to settle, not seeking a third format that required another player. When Toshiba withdrew HD DVD in February 2008, Blu-ray’s position became clearer still. Contemporary analysis framed HD VMD as a late entrant to a market whose main battle was already nearing resolution.
This was not simply a matter of being technically outclassed. HD VMD’s red-laser strategy offered a cost argument, but it could not erase the installed base, studio commitments and retail relationships already surrounding the competing systems. By the time a third format might have built momentum, the market had even less appetite for another incompatible disc standard.
What happened to NME and HD VMD?
NME demonstrated and promoted the platform before announcing players and titles for U.S. buyers around late 2007 and early 2008. The Blu-ray/HD DVD contest resolved in Blu-ray’s favor in 2008, leaving HD VMD without a path to broad adoption. Historical accounts describe an NME notice to the SEC in June 2008 concerning termination of its reporting registration, followed by voluntary strike-off applications by associated UK companies in August. These dates indicate a corporate wind-down; they do not establish one precise day when all operations ceased. The available historical chronology also reports later efforts to revive aspects of the technology for higher-capacity optical discs, but no enduring consumer format emerged.

No. Adding layers to DVD-like media and encoding high-definition video within a suitable bitrate and codec framework was technically feasible. What failed was the commercial proposition: HD VMD did not attract enough hardware buyers, widely available content, retail commitment and long-term support. Its history is better understood as an ecosystem and timing failure than as proof of a single fatal optical-engineering defect.
What the format war says about technology launches
- Specifications establish what a system may support; they do not guarantee what buyers receive on a particular disc.
- Content and distribution can matter more to adoption than theoretical capacity or a lower manufacturing cost.
- A low upfront price does not make a good value if the ecosystem is too small to serve the buyer.
- Late entry is especially risky when customers have already invested in incompatible hardware and are waiting for a winner.
- Manufacturing familiarity cannot substitute for coordination among studios, retailers, hardware makers and service providers.
HD VMD remains a historical curiosity for format collectors, not a practical mainstream home-theater choice. Anyone considering used hardware faces uncertain player reliability, disc condition, regional availability and repair support.
