HBO Max did launch in the United States with a 7-day free trial on May 27, 2020. That was a historical launch offer, not proof of a current promotion: Max’s current help page says most subscription providers do not offer free trials, and any trial’s terms must be shown during signup.
What the original 7-day offer was
HBO Max launched in the U.S. on May 27, 2020, with a seven-day trial and a launch price of $14.99 per month, according to Droid Life’s launch-day report. The service was presented as a broader WarnerMedia library, not just HBO: the report listed HBO programming alongside Warner Bros. films, DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, TBS, TNT, truTV, Looney Tunes, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth and Max originals.
The same launch coverage said that many existing HBO subscribers through participating cable providers and HBO Now subscribers could receive HBO Max access without starting a separate subscription, although provider exceptions applied. That describes the 2020 launch arrangements; it does not establish present-day eligibility or access.
Is a 7-day trial available now?
There is no universally guaranteed seven-day Max trial. Max says most subscription providers do not offer a free trial; a trial is available only when a specific offer is displayed, and the signup offer determines its length and conditions. Check the final checkout screen rather than relying on an old headline or an outside promotion page. See Max’s free-trial guidance.

If no trial is displayed, assume the plan is paid from the start. Promotions can vary by provider, region, eligibility and time, so a trial seen by someone else may not appear for your account. If you already receive HBO or Max through a television, internet, wireless or streaming package, check that provider’s benefits before subscribing again; Max’s signup instructions advise checking for existing access.

Max’s U.S. plan page lists the following prices and features. These are U.S. prices shown on the page as of August 2026, not a promise that prices will remain unchanged. Annual billing has a larger upfront charge than monthly billing.

The higher tiers matter if you specifically need downloads, more simultaneous streams, supported 4K titles or select live sports; Basic with Ads is the lowest-priced listed tier. The page also lists an HBO Only plan at $16.99 per month, the same monthly price as Standard, while Standard includes a broader Max selection; see Max’s HBO Only plan details. How to check and start a promotional trial
- Open Max’s official signup page at max.com/product.
- Choose a plan and billing period, then sign in or create an account.
- Before entering payment details, confirm that the offer explicitly says “free trial” and states its duration, eligibility terms, renewal date and post-trial price. If it does not say there is a trial, do not assume one is included.
- Review the payment method and any provider-specific terms, then complete signup only if the displayed renewal terms suit you.
- Save the renewal date and confirmation details, and set a reminder if you intend to cancel before the first paid period.
Max’s signup guidance says to choose a plan and billing period, provide an email address and payment method, and start the subscription. The subscription auto-renews unless canceled. A payment method is generally required for a trial, but the exact checkout offer controls.

What happens to billing after signup
A trial or paid subscription generally renews automatically unless canceled in time. Max says to cancel before the trial ends or before the next billing date to avoid the next charge. The renewal date and amount shown for your specific offer are more useful than assuming every provider charges at the same time; billing timing may vary by provider.
A temporary payment authorization may appear even when a trial is offered. Max says an authorization hold can take 7–10 days to disappear, depending on the financial institution; it is not necessarily a completed subscription charge. If a full charge appears, check whether the checkout actually included a trial, whether you were eligible, and whether the transaction is only a hold. How to cancel before renewal
Cancel through whoever bills the subscription. If Max bills you directly, use max.com/subscription, sign in, select Cancel Your Subscription and confirm. Keep the confirmation and note the displayed expiration date.
If the subscription is billed by Apple, Google Play, Roku, a TV or wireless provider, or another partner, cancellation normally has to be completed through that provider. Check the account’s Subscription section to identify the billing company, then follow that company’s cancellation process. Deleting the Max app does not cancel a subscription; Max explains this at its cancellation help page. Max says early cancellation can generally leave access active through the trial or billing period, but use the expiration date shown for your particular offer.

What can you watch during a trial?
When a trial applies, Max says it covers the content included with the plan attached to that offer; it is not necessarily a limited sampler. What you can watch still depends on your country, plan, device and the titles currently licensed there. Live sports, downloads, 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos are not universal plan features, and high-resolution or audio formats also require supported titles and devices.
Do not count on a particular movie or series being available without checking the catalog in your region. Catalogs change, and a seven-day trial may not include a full season if episodes are released weekly.
Does the service still use the HBO Max name?
The branding is transitioning: Max’s help center says “Max is becoming HBO Max,” while its support pages still refer to Max for accounts, plans and billing. The service’s billing and subscription help center reflects that transition. This is a name change, not evidence that the old 2020 trial has returned.

When a trial is—and is not—a good fit
- A trial can be useful if its displayed terms cover enough time to watch a specific available title, test your devices or check whether a plan’s streams, downloads or quality work for your household.
- It is a poor fit if you need a permanent free plan, broad live-TV replacement, or a title that is unavailable in your region. It is also risky if you are unlikely to track the renewal date.
- Choose the tier based on features you will use: ad tolerance, number of simultaneous viewers, downloads, supported 4K and audio needs, and interest in select live sports.
- Do not start a second subscription until you have checked whether an existing provider or bundle already gives you access.
