“HBO Max glitching” can mean a weak or unstable connection, an app or device fault, a sign-in problem, or trouble with one particular title. Start by trying another show, then test HBO Max on another device using the same network. Those two checks help separate a title or device issue from a home-network or broader service problem.
For a quick first pass: force-close and reopen the app, check for updates, sign out, fully restart the device, and restart your modem and router. If the problem continues, test another device or network before reinstalling the app. The steps below narrow down the cause without jumping straight to a faster internet plan or replacement hardware.
First, work out what is glitching
There is no single fix for every HBO Max playback problem. Use these tests to identify whether the issue follows a title, device, network, or account:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Try a different show or movie. If only one title fails, the problem may be specific to that title rather than your connection or the whole service. Note the title and episode.
- Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If HBO Max works there, focus on the original device, its app, or its software. HBO Max recommends this comparison as a way to distinguish a device problem from a network problem (HBO Max buffering and playback guidance).
- Try a different network, if practical. For example, test on a phone using cellular data. If playback works on cellular but fails on home Wi-Fi, investigate the home network, router, ISP, or a VPN before changing your HBO Max subscription.
- Check another streaming service on the same connection. If it also buffers, a home-network or ISP problem is more likely. If HBO Max alone fails, the app, account, title, or HBO Max service may be involved.
- Notice the scope. One profile, one device, one title, or every device can point to different causes. Record any error message or code.
A failure on several devices does not by itself prove HBO Max is down: those devices may share the same network or account. The support pages below explain fixes but do not establish live outage status. Check HBO Max’s official troubleshooting center for current guidance, and avoid treating isolated user reports as confirmation of a platform-wide incident.

Try these fixes in order
- Force-close HBO Max and reopen it. Leaving a TV or streaming box in sleep mode may not fully restart the app.
- Try another title. This is a quick check for a title-specific problem.
- Update HBO Max. Check the device’s app store or app-update menu.
- Update the device. Install available operating-system or TV firmware updates through its system settings.
- Sign out of HBO Max, then sign back in. This can help when playback or account authorization is stuck.
- Fully restart the device. Turn it off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both for 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem first and allow about a minute for it to reconnect; then reconnect the router. Wait for the network to return before reopening HBO Max.
- Test another device on the same network. If the other device works, concentrate on the original device or app. If neither works, continue with network and account checks.
- Reinstall HBO Max if the problem remains isolated to one device. You will need to sign in again, and reinstalling may remove downloaded content. Menu names vary by device.
This sequence reflects the steps in HBO Max’s error-message guidance. It is a troubleshooting path, not a guarantee that any one step will fix the fault.
If HBO Max is buffering, pausing, or showing poor quality
HBO Max lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for HD and 50 Mbps or more for 4K in its U.S. playback guidance. Those figures are useful reference points, not a promise that playback will be smooth: a speed test measures a moment and does not rule out packet loss, latency or jitter, Wi-Fi interference, router overload, or congestion between your ISP and the streaming service.
- Run a speed test on the same network as the affected device, ideally near it. Compare the result with the relevant HD or 4K figure.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game downloads, video calls, or other heavy network use, then test again.
- If the device uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router or reduce obstacles and interference. Restarting the modem and router can also help.
- If supported, connect the TV, streaming box, or computer to the router with Ethernet. A wired connection can help diagnose unstable Wi-Fi, though it is not a cure for every network issue.
- Test HBO Max on another device on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device buffers, update or reinstall its app before changing your internet plan.
- If HBO Max works on cellular data but not on home Wi-Fi, focus on the home connection. A cellular test may use mobile data, so keep it brief if your plan has a limit.
HBO Max’s network troubleshooting page recommends reducing other network activity, restarting network equipment, trying a wired connection, and testing another device. A high peak speed does not necessarily mean a stable stream.

If the app freezes, crashes, or shows a black screen
Start with a force-close and full device restart, then update both HBO Max and the device software. Sign out and back in; if the glitch is still limited to one device, reinstall the app. Reinstallation is a reasonable next step for a damaged or outdated installation, but it may require a fresh sign-in and remove downloads.
On a TV or streaming setup, also check the display path. Reseat the HDMI cable, try another port or cable if available, and temporarily connect the playback device directly to the TV instead of routing it through a receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch. If menus or sound work but the picture is black, that comparison can help isolate the display chain from the app. If only audio is missing, use the audio checks below.
Do not update a device to beta firmware or reset unrelated equipment just to address one app. If the problem started immediately after an app or device update, note the version and when the issue began; that information is useful when contacting support.

- Apple TV: Update HBO Max in the App Store. Update the device at Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. Restart at Settings > System > Restart. You can delete and reinstall the app if the issue persists.
- Android TV: Highlight HBO Max, press and hold Select, and choose View Details > Update. Check for device software updates in system settings. Reinstall from Google Play if the problem is limited to that TV.
- LG TV: Open LG Content Store > Apps > My Apps, select HBO Max, and choose Update. If necessary, remove and reinstall the app from the Content Store.
- Roku: Highlight the HBO Max channel, press the Star button, and check for updates. Test the connection at Settings > Network > Check connection; restart the Roku and network equipment if needed.
- PlayStation: Highlight HBO Max from the Media home menu, press Options, and choose Delete. Reinstall it through All Apps.
- Xbox: Check HBO Max and Xbox service status, then update the app and console. If the problem continues, sign out, restart, and consider reinstalling.
Samsung TVs and other supported devices have their own update and reinstall steps. Use the device-specific instructions in HBO Max’s troubleshooting center rather than assuming every TV has the same menus.
If you see “Something went wrong” or an error code
The message “Something went wrong” is not a diagnosis by itself. Force-close and reopen HBO Max, try another title, check for app or browser updates, sign out, and restart the device. Then try HBO Max on another supported device. On a computer, test a different supported browser. Restart the modem and router if the error persists.

Write down the exact wording and error code before retrying. If only one episode or movie produces the message, record its title and episode as well; that is more useful than reporting that the entire service is broken. HBO Max’s error-code steps recommend this kind of device, title, and network troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If HBO Max glitches in a web browser
HBO Max names Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari among supported browsers in its browser troubleshooting guidance. If one browser fails, update it and test another supported browser. Also try closing and reopening the browser, enabling third-party cookies if required, disabling ad blockers or other extensions temporarily, and avoiding private or incognito mode.
The current U.S. HBO Max troubleshooting page states that the highest resolution supported at HBOMax.com is 720p and notes that displays above 720p may have fullscreen or clipping issues (HBO Max device guidance; checked September 2026). Treat that as the statement of that U.S. help page, not a universal promise about every device, plan, region, or browser configuration: support guidance can change. If browser playback is unstable, try the native app on a supported TV or streaming device.

If the sound is missing, delayed, or distorted
Check audio separately from video; HBO Max lists audio issues as their own support category. First test whether sound works in another app and whether HBO Max audio works through headphones or the TV’s built-in speakers. Confirm the TV is not muted and the intended audio output is selected.
- Temporarily bypass a soundbar, receiver, Bluetooth headset, or HDMI switch to see whether the direct TV output works.
- Restart the playback device and the audio equipment, then update HBO Max and device firmware.
- If available, test stereo output instead of surround sound. This is a diagnostic comparison, not necessarily the preferred permanent setting.
- Note whether the fault affects dialogue, all sound, a surround format, or only one title.
Those comparisons can help tell an app or title problem from an HDMI, receiver, or audio-output issue. HBO Max’s watching support categories include separate audio troubleshooting.
If you cannot sign in, keep getting signed out, or see a VPN or provider message
Playback troubleshooting will not fix an account authorization problem. Check that the subscription is active and that the account or provider sign-in is the one associated with your access. If HBO Max is included through a TV, internet, or other subscription provider, use HBO Max’s official provider-authentication flow and contact that provider if it no longer recognizes your subscription. See the official sign-in troubleshooting page.
Recommended Free Tools
If a VPN-related message appears, turn off the VPN only as a temporary, controlled test on a trusted connection. Do not broadly disable security tools or share your password or verification codes. Device-limit, regional availability, billing, and repeated sign-out messages have separate causes; use the official help center’s guidance for the exact message rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. The HBO Max help categories include VPN, device setup, device-limit, and sign-in topics.
When to contact HBO Max support
Escalate if the issue persists after updates and restarts, especially if it happens on multiple supported devices and separate networks; a specific error code keeps returning; one title consistently fails across devices; or an official provider cannot authenticate your subscription. If the issue began after a known app or device update, include that detail.
Before contacting support, collect:
- Exact error text and code, if shown
- Device make and model, operating-system version, and HBO Max app version if available
- For browser playback, browser name and version
- Whether all titles fail or just one title or episode
- Whether another device works on the same network, and whether playback works on a separate network
- When the issue began, and whether a VPN, ad blocker, receiver, or subscription provider is involved
Use HBO Max’s official support channels or your subscription provider as appropriate. Avoid phone numbers in unofficial search results that claim to be HBO Max support.
