HBO Max and Paramount+ now share an owner, and the company says they will unify into one streaming service over time—but the apps had not merged when the deal closed, and key details remain unannounced.
What changed—and which deal actually closed?
Paramount completed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, according to Associated Press reporting published October 7. The combined company is described as Skydance. Its portfolio now includes Warner Bros., HBO Max and networks such as CNN, alongside Paramount+, CBS and other Paramount properties.
Netflix was involved in an earlier proposed transaction, but it did not buy Warner Bros. Discovery. On February 26, 2026, Netflix said it would not raise its offer after Warner Bros. Discovery’s board deemed Paramount Skydance’s proposal superior. Netflix’s co-CEOs described the negotiated deal as a “nice to have” at the right price, not something they would pursue at any price (Netflix’s statement).
Will HBO Max and Paramount+ become one app?
The company says HBO Max and Paramount+ will “unify into a single service over time,” as reported by the Associated Press. That describes a future plan, not a completed merger: immediately after the closing, the apps were expected to look the same as before. The company has not announced a timetable or confirmed whether the single service will be a new app, a renamed existing app, or another arrangement.

David Ellison, Paramount Skydance’s CEO, said, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” That signals an intention to preserve HBO’s identity; it does not confirm that HBO Max will continue as a separate app or subscription. The acquired portfolio also includes Discovery+, but the announcement reported by AP specifically describes unifying HBO Max and Paramount+. It does not establish that Discovery+ will join that service.
What does this mean for current subscribers?
For the immediate period after closing, AP reported that HBO Max and Paramount+ would look unchanged. Syracuse University professor J. Christopher Hamilton told AP, “I do not believe the consumer is going to observe the difference in the organization, whether it be in raised subscription fees to HBO Max or raised subscription fees to Paramount+ or new programming rolled out in the first quarter.” That is his short-term assessment, not a company guarantee or a commitment about future prices.

The cited reporting does not establish the combined service’s name, launch date, subscription price, advertising options, included titles, or account-migration process. It also does not say Netflix subscribers will need to change plans. Shared ownership is not the same as a merged app, a changed subscription, or an instruction for customers to switch services.
How large could the combined streaming offering be?
AP reported U.S. streaming-market shares attributed to JustWatch for 2026. The figures indicate scale, but they are not subscriber counts, household penetration, viewing hours, or a prediction of the combined service’s future share. AP’s quoted passage does not specify the measurement period.

The combined figure gives a rough sense of the two services’ current scale relative to Netflix, but it should not be read as a guaranteed post-merger share or a measure of how much content any subscriber will receive.

- Monthly price and whether ad-supported and ad-free plans are available.
- Which films, series, sports and news programming are included, and whether availability differs by country.
- Limits on simultaneous streams and downloads.
- What happens to existing subscriptions, billing, profiles and watchlists—and whether customers need to take action.
Those terms will determine whether the change is merely a new way to access the catalogs or a meaningful change to what customers pay for and watch.
