A Learjet 35A associated with Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil veered off the runway while landing at Scottsdale Airport on February 10, 2025, and struck a parked Gulfstream G200. Neil was not aboard. The Learjet’s captain died and four other people were injured. The National Transportation Safety Board has identified a serious landing-gear safety concern, but its investigation remains ongoing and it has not issued a final probable-cause finding.
What happened at Scottsdale Airport?
The Learjet, registration N81VN, was operated by Chromed in Hollywood Inc. on a Part 91 corporate flight from Austin, Texas. It was landing on runway 21 at Scottsdale Airport when it left the runway and hit a parked Gulfstream G200. This was a runway excursion followed by a collision with a parked aircraft—not a midair collision. The NTSB’s preliminary report for case WPR25FA088 records the aircraft, flight and injury details.
In an October 29, 2025 update, the NTSB said the Learjet entered a left-wing-low attitude after touchdown, departed the left side of the runway and struck the Gulfstream. The Learjet’s left main landing gear separated during the sequence. These are investigative observations, not a final determination of why the accident happened. The NTSB cautions in its preliminary report: “This information is preliminary and subject to change during the course of the investigation.”
Who was on the plane, and who was hurt?
Neil was not aboard the Learjet, according to the Associated Press, which cited a law firm representing him. AP reported that his representative expressed sympathy for those involved and gratitude to first responders.

The NTSB’s preliminary tally was one fatal injury, three serious injuries and one minor injury. The person killed was Learjet captain Joie Vitosky, 78. The seriously injured included the first officer, a Learjet passenger and an occupant of the parked Gulfstream; another Learjet passenger sustained minor injuries. AP reported Vitosky’s ex-wife, Ann Vitosky, saying, “His passion was flying.”
What has the NTSB found about the landing gear?
The NTSB’s October 27, 2025 safety report focused on the Learjet main landing gear and its attachment. On October 29, the agency issued an urgent recommendation that specified Bombardier service bulletins be made mandatory across 10 Learjet models. The NTSB said those models covered 1,883 airplanes in service. It also recommended a visual check after maintenance to confirm that the aft trunnion pin and retaining bolt were correctly positioned. The agency’s safety report and October 29 release describe the interim safety actions.

At the time of that October 29 release, Bombardier reported that 12 percent of the affected airplanes had been inspected. That is a dated figure, not a current fleet-wide inspection total. The NTSB’s recommendations identify a safety concern warranting action; they do not, by themselves, establish that a specific maintenance error caused this crash.
What is known about the crew’s earlier landing?
AP’s account of the NTSB preliminary report says the same flight crew had a hard landing in Oklahoma in June 2024, bursting both left main landing-gear tires. Subsequent maintenance removed both main landing gear for inspection. This is relevant background to the aircraft’s maintenance history, but it is not proof of the cause of the February 2025 crash.

Has the cause of the crash been determined?
No final probable cause has been published in the official case materials cited here. The NTSB’s WPR25FA088 investigation page lists the investigation as ongoing. The runway departure, impact and landing-gear observations describe what investigators have reported so far; the safety recommendations are interim actions. Neither should be presented as the board’s final explanation of the accident.
