What Welch said about going viral
Welch said the original encounter happened during CMA Fest in Nashville. Someone approached her with a microphone and asked a sexually explicit question; her off-the-cuff answer became the “Hawk Tuah” catchphrase. She said she did not expect to see the footage again. The scale of the attention became clear only when she looked at her phone before an early shift at work.

Her account undercut the idea that the moment was a planned publicity stunt. Rolling Stone quoted her saying, “I could talk to a brick wall if you really let me,” describing her willingness to keep chatting with the street interviewer.
The interview and its timing
A first sit-down conversation
Brianna LaPaglia hosted Welch on Plan Bri Uncut at the end of June 2024, after Welch had appeared at a Zach Bryan concert in Nashville. The Washington Post called it Welch’s first sit-down interview following the viral clip; Rolling Stone described the video chat as 13 minutes long.

Name spellings in coverage
The guest is Haliey Welch. The host’s name is commonly reported as Brianna LaPaglia, although the supplied title spells it “Briana.”
What Welch clarified about her life
Welch pushed back on several claims circulating online. According to The Washington Post’s July 8, 2024 account, she said she was not a teacher, her father was not a preacher and she had not left school because of the viral video. She had left school years earlier. Those statements correct particular rumors rather than provide a complete biography.

She described her family as supportive and mentioned possibilities such as a show and additional podcast appearances. The interview records those as ideas discussed at the time, not confirmed productions or current commitments.
Privacy problems and fake accounts
The sudden attention brought impersonation attempts. Welch said fake accounts used photographs of her friends and called the experience creepy: “They got pictures of all my friends, like social media and stuff like that. It’s kind of creepy.”

She also said someone offered $600 for her spit to be sold in a jar and rejected the proposal. The episode illustrates how quickly a viral joke can produce invasive or bizarre commercial approaches.
How the clip became a wider internet phenomenon
The Washington Post placed Welch’s experience in a broader internet economy in which short, repeatable clips are copied, remixed and redistributed by audiences. Journalist and internet-culture writer Mark Read and commentator Rachel Richardson pointed to audience subcultures and TikTok tools such as duets and stitches as mechanisms that can extend a meme’s circulation. Their comments describe common pathways for online spread; they are not a statistical demonstration of exactly why Welch’s clip reached its audience.

Welch’s explanation captures the gap between making a casual remark and becoming an internet character. The clip was recorded in Nashville during CMA Fest in June 2024, but its consequences included public scrutiny, impersonation, rumor correction and attempts to monetize the phrase. Her LaPaglia interview is useful primarily because it supplies Welch’s own account of that transition: surprise at the overnight reach, discomfort with copied identities and uncertainty about what opportunities might follow.
