Mariah Carey’s parents were Patricia Carey, a singer and vocal coach, and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer. Carey was three when they divorced in 1972, and she lived primarily with her mother. Profiles describe Patricia as Irish-American and Alfred as Black and of Venezuelan background; those descriptions should be understood as reported background, not a complete genealogy.

Who were Mariah Carey’s parents?

Patricia Carey

Patricia Carey was a singer associated with the New York City Opera and a vocal coach. The Associated Press described her as Juilliard-trained; earlier profiles also report that she taught voice. The Washington Post’s 1995 profile and the AP report published in 2024 provide biographical context.

Alfred Roy Carey

Alfred Roy Carey worked as an aeronautical engineer. Carey said in a 2006 profile that he had served in the military. Profiles describe him as Black and of Venezuelan background, while describing Patricia as Irish-American. These are attributed descriptions; the available accounts do not establish a more detailed family genealogy. The 2006 Rolling Stone profile records Carey’s account of her parents and their meeting.

What happened to Carey’s parents?

The Washington Post reported that Patricia and Alfred divorced in 1972, when Mariah was three. She stayed with Patricia and seldom saw Alfred after the separation, according to that profile. Carey later discussed the divorce and her family life in an interview hosted by the Library of Congress.

Carey recalled a difficult childhood and described her family as dysfunctional in the Library of Congress-hosted interview. That is her characterization of her experience, not a clinical diagnosis or a verified account of every event. In a 1994 interview with Jet, she also reflected on the pressures her parents faced as an interracial couple during the 1960s and 1970s; that is her perspective on their circumstances, not a measure of how common such marriages were.

How did Patricia influence Carey’s early interest in music?

Carey credited her mother with recognizing and encouraging her musical ability. In the Washington Post profile, she recalled that Patricia noticed her following an opera cue before she was four. Patricia’s professional work as a singer and vocal coach formed part of Carey’s early musical environment, though that context does not reduce their relationship to a single role.

When did Mariah Carey’s parents die?

The Associated Press reported that Alfred Roy Carey died of cancer in 2002 at age 72. It reported Patricia Carey’s death in 2024; the AP account cited here does not give her exact date of death. The dates are biographical reporting, not findings from a statistical study.

Where to read Carey’s own account

The Meaning of Mariah Carey, published in 2020, is Carey’s memoir and offers her first-person account of her childhood and family. It is useful for understanding what Carey says she experienced and felt; it is not an independent biography. The Library of Congress-hosted interview also records Carey discussing her family and the memoir. For dates, occupations, and other externally verifiable details, profiles and wire-service reporting provide a different kind of evidence.
