Hamilton says its watches have appeared in more than 500 movies and television productions, a company-reported total rather than an independently audited count. The screen history it describes stretches from Shanghai Express (1932) to recent films, but “cameo” covers several different things: an existing watch chosen for a character or period, a brand appearance, and a custom prop built to serve a story.
Why Hamilton watches keep appearing on screen
Hamilton’s appeal to filmmakers is not limited to placing a recognizable watch on an actor’s wrist. Its official history includes watches selected to suit a film’s period or characters, alongside commissions where the production needed a design or function that an existing watch could not provide. That distinction matters: a custom prop made for a film is not necessarily a retail model, and a later commercial watch inspired by a prop is not literally the same object.
Hamilton says its film history began with Shanghai Express in 1932. The company identifies Flintridge and Piping Rock watches in that film and reports more than 500 movie and television appearances. The number is Hamilton’s own undated claim; the cited company pages do not establish an independent count. See Hamilton’s cinema history and its movie-watch collection.
Hamilton’s film-watch timeline
| Year | Film | Watch connection | What kind of appearance? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1932 | Shanghai Express | Flintridge and Piping Rock watches | Hamilton’s account of an early film appearance |
| 1951 | The Frogmen | Frogman watches | Selected to reflect the equipment divers would have used in the World War II film |
| 1968 | 2001: A Space Odyssey | Watches and clocks designed for the production | Bespoke prop work, after an existing watch did not suit the need |
| 1997–2019 | Men in Black films | Ventura | Recognizable model associated with Agents J, K and M |
| 2001 | Pearl Harbor | Khaki Field Handwinding/Mechanical watches | Period-style choices for pilots; Hamilton’s pages use both names, which should not be assumed to identify an identical reference |
| 2014 | Interstellar | Custom Murph prop | Plot device and emotional link between Cooper and his daughter |
| 2019 | Retail Khaki Field Murph | 42 mm model inspired by the film prop | Commercial watch following the film by five years |
| 2020 | TENET | Custom countdown-display watch based on the Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO | Engineered prop developed with the film’s design team |
| 2022 | Retail Khaki Field Murph | 38 mm model | Smaller commercial version, according to Hamilton’s company history |
| 2023 | Oppenheimer | Vintage watches from the 1930s and 1940s | Pieces sourced from collectors for three central characters, rather than a new movie edition |

The Ventura is Hamilton’s clearest franchise watch
Hamilton links the Ventura with the Men in Black franchise from the original 1997 movie through Men in Black: International (2019). The company associates the watch with Agents J and K in the first film and Agent M in the later installment. Unlike a prop created to carry a plot mechanism, the Ventura’s role is as a recognizable character detail across the series. Hamilton’s film account and brand history describe the connection.
The Murph turned a film prop into a retail watch
In Interstellar (2014), the Murph is more than a costume accessory: it carries a Morse-code message and helps connect Joseph Cooper with his daughter, Murphy. Hamilton says the prop was designed and created especially for the film, based on a Khaki Field model. The screen prop and retail model are related, but they should not be treated as the same watch.

Hamilton brought the concept to consumers with a 42 mm retail Khaki Field Murph in 2019, then released a 38 mm version in 2022. These are the clearest film-linked choices for someone seeking a commercially available Hamilton model with a direct relationship to a movie prop. The company’s Murph page documents the transition; its history page dates the smaller model.
TENET shows what custom prop engineering can mean
For TENET (2020), Hamilton says it collaborated with the film’s design team on a custom watch built around the display of its Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO. The display served the film’s countdown concept. Hamilton reports 18 months of technical development, testing and production at a Swatch Group laboratory in Switzerland. That timeline is the company’s account, not an independently measured production schedule.

This is a different relationship from the Murph retail watch: Hamilton’s material establishes the custom TENET prop and its technical basis, but does not establish a retail equivalent. Details are in Hamilton’s TENET account.

Watches selected to fit the setting
Hamilton says Frogman watches were selected for The Frogmen (1951) to reflect the equipment divers would have used in the World War II story. For Pearl Harbor (2001), its pages identify Khaki Field Handwinding or Mechanical watches as period-style choices for pilots; the two labels appear in different company descriptions, so the exact reference relationship is not established here.

For Oppenheimer (2023), Hamilton says vintage watches from the 1930s and 1940s were sourced from collectors for three central characters. The account describes period pieces chosen for the production, not a newly created film edition, and does not specify exact references for those watches.
Other film examples
Hamilton’s film-watch pages also name the Khaki BeLOWZERO 1000m Auto in The Martian, the Khaki Field Mechanical in Sonic the Hedgehog, a Hamilton watch worn by John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises, and the Jazzmaster Day Date Auto in Ocean’s Eight. These examples show the breadth of the company’s screen appearances, but the cited descriptions do not make each one a custom prop or provide the same level of detail about its production role. How to read a Hamilton film appearance
- Existing model chosen for a character or period: a watch already in the range is selected because it suits the setting, role or costume.
- Brand appearance: a recognizable Hamilton model appears on screen, as with the Ventura in Men in Black.
- Custom film prop: a design is made or adapted for production needs, as Hamilton describes for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar and TENET.
- Prop-inspired retail model: a later watch sold to consumers takes inspiration from a film prop, as with the Khaki Field Murph. The commercial model and original prop remain distinct objects.
Hamilton is a primary source for its own claimed collaborations and product relationships. Its accounts are useful for identifying what the company says it supplied or developed, but the “more than 500” total remains a company-reported figure, and not every listed appearance has been independently checked against film credits here.
