It follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes investigating his first murder in 1870s Oxford. Guy Ritchie helped develop the show, executive-produced it and directed selected episodes; he did not direct the entire season.
The Amazon project is Young Sherlock
Young Sherlock is an action-adventure mystery drama set in the 1870s. The story begins with Sherlock as a teenager in Oxford, before he has become the finished consulting detective familiar from Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. His first murder investigation draws him into a wider conspiracy and brings him into contact with a young James Moriarty.

The eight-episode series launched exclusively on Prime Video on March 4, 2026. Amazon said it was released in more than 240 countries and territories, although local catalog listings, language options and advertising treatment can vary. Its premise places Holmes in a coming-of-age story as much as a detective story: he is learning how to investigate, whom to trust and what kind of man he wants to become.

What Guy Ritchie actually did
Ritchie’s involvement is substantial but more specific than the shorthand “a Guy Ritchie series” suggests.
| Role | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Developer and creative leader | Ritchie helped shape the series’ concept and direction. |
| Executive producer | He is part of the senior producing team overseeing the project. |
| Director | He directed selected episodes, not all eight. |
| Showrunner | Matthew Parkhill is the showrunner and principal day-to-day creative lead. |
Credits reported by Metacritic and summarized by T3 therefore support “Ritchie-developed and Ritchie-influenced,” not “directed entirely by Ritchie.”
A new Holmes, not Sherlock Holmes 3
Young Sherlock shares a creator with Ritchie’s films Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), but it has a different cast and an origin-story structure. Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Sherlock rather than Robert Downey Jr.; Dónal Finn plays James Moriarty rather than a continuation of the film timeline.
The principal cast also includes Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes, Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes, Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, according to the Rotten Tomatoes cast listing.
No available official information establishes the series as a direct prequel to the Downey Jr. movies. The connection is best understood as creative and stylistic lineage, not confirmed continuity.
How much of Ritchie’s style is in it?
The series uses the ingredients viewers commonly associate with Ritchie: rapid momentum, stylized action, energetic cutting, comic banter and a heightened version of a period setting. Reviews summarized by Metacritic describe it as a modernized origin story carrying his trademark energy.
Rank #3
That approach makes Holmes more physically active and impulsive than in a quiet, deduction-first adaptation. It also creates the central trade-off: viewers seeking a traditional Conan Doyle puzzle may find the action emphasis excessive, while fans of Ritchie’s films may see the youthful reinvention as the point.
What critics and audiences think

| Source | Critics | Audience/users |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes | Approximately 84% | Approximately 83% |
| Metacritic | 65 from 20 reviews | 7.3 from 72 ratings |
The favorable response centers on pace, charm, performances, action and Ritchie-style energy. Reservations include an overstuffed or convoluted plot, uneven pacing and liberties with Holmes’s established characterization. Taken together, the reception is generally positive rather than universally acclaimed.

Who should watch?
It is a good fit if you want:
- A fast, eight-episode action-mystery binge.
- A younger, still-forming version of Sherlock Holmes.
- Stylized violence, humor and rapid editing.
- A loose contemporary interpretation of classic characters.
- Another project carrying Ritchie’s recognizable creative imprint.
Choose something else if you want:
- A faithful, puzzle-led adaptation of Conan Doyle.
- Quiet procedural deduction with minimal spectacle.
- Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law or continuity with the films.
- A restrained period drama rather than heightened action.
Why the “streaming king” label partly fits
“Streaming king” is a headline metaphor, not a verified industry ranking. The evidence for the phrase is Ritchie’s spread across competing platforms:
| Service | Ritchie project | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | The Gentlemen | Television expansion of his crime-comedy sensibility. |
| Paramount+ | MobLand | An organized-crime drama associated with Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren. |
| Prime Video | Young Sherlock | A major literary character reworked as an action origin story. |
| Apple TV+ | Fountain of Youth | Continued streaming-film activity. |
This is platform diversification and brand portability, not proof that Ritchie leads streaming in viewers, revenue, awards or output. He has become a valuable creator-for-hire and producer whose projects can move between rival services while retaining a recognizable identity.

Best Value
- The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes [Blu-ray] [UK Region Spanish Import]
- Best value: viewers who also use Prime delivery, Prime Music or other membership benefits.
- Weaker value: someone subscribing only for this single eight-episode series.
- Alternative: Netflix carries The Gentlemen at its official signup page, while Paramount+ is the relevant service for MobLand; neither replaces Prime Video access to Young Sherlock.
What comes next?
As of August 16, 2026, the first season had finished. A second season appeared in development or production-related listings, and Rotten Tomatoes displayed a season-two teaser, but the available information did not provide a clearly confirmed official premiere date from Prime Video or Amazon MGM. Treat any release-date claim as unconfirmed until an official announcement appears.
Verdict
Young Sherlock is best understood as a kinetic young-Holmes reinvention with Ritchie’s influence, not a continuation of his Robert Downey Jr. films and not a season directed entirely by Ritchie. Its broadly positive but qualified reception makes it a sensible Prime Video choice for viewers who want action, humor and a modernized mystery; Holmes purists and fans of quiet deduction should approach it more cautiously. The “streaming king” argument is persuasive as a story about Ritchie’s reach across Netflix, Paramount+ and Prime Video, but it remains a metaphor rather than a measurable title.
