Great Baddow Hoard: What Britain’s 935-Coin Iron Age Discovery Reveals

The Great Baddow Hoard is a late Iron Age deposit from Essex that began with 933 gold coins and now comprises 935, after two more Whaddon Chase staters were recovered from the findspot in 2025. The Museum of Chelmsford dates the hoard to 60–20 BC and calls it the largest recorded hoard of Iron Age gold coins found in Britain. That ranking is the museum’s description; the coins’ precise purpose and the circumstances of their burial remain unresolved.

What was found at Great Baddow?

A detectorist discovered the hoard on private land at Great Baddow in 2020, more than 2,000 years after it had been buried. The original discovery consisted of 933 gold Iron Age coins together with fragments that may have belonged to a vessel or other container. The Museum of Chelmsford dates the deposit broadly to 60–20 BC, a period when political communities in eastern Britain were changing rapidly and producing their own coinage.

Most of the original coins are Eastern British staters of the Whaddon Chase type. The museum identifies 930 of the 933 coins as Whaddon Chase staters. “Stater” is a modern numismatic term for a high-value Iron Age gold denomination; it does not mean that every coin was necessarily issued by a single ruler or at one mint. The remaining pieces in the original assemblage were not all identified in the published account as Whaddon Chase staters, so the safest description is the one used by the museum: a very large group dominated by that type.

The title “king’s ransom” is a dramatic description, not a modern valuation. The available accounts do not establish what the coins would be worth in contemporary money, and no defensible present-day market value has been published for the hoard as a whole.

Why the total changed from 933 to 935

The number attached to the hoard depends on whether one is describing the initial find or the complete group now associated with the site. A later archaeological investigation added two coins without changing the original discovery count.

Date or stage What happened Count at that stage
2020 The original discovery at Great Baddow included gold coins and fragments of a possible container. 933 coins
Autumn 2025 Archaeology South-East excavated a two-metre-square trench at the findspot for the museum and recovered two further Whaddon Chase staters. 935 associated coins, pending acquisition
April 2026 The Museum of Chelmsford acquired the two excavated coins. 935 coins presented as the hoard

This distinction matters in any account of the discovery. The hoard found in 2020 was 933 coins; 935 is the current total after the two later recoveries. The Chelmsford City Council report describes the excavation and acquisition, while the museum’s collection page gives the composition and date range.

What the coin types suggest about eastern Britain

Coin distribution provides a clue to the people and places connected to the deposit, but it does not identify a single owner or event. The museum says most of the staters are thought to have been produced in an area later associated with the Catuvellauni. Great Baddow, by contrast, lies in territory traditionally associated with the Trinovantes.

That geographic contrast is significant because it places a Catuvellaunian-linked currency group in a landscape conventionally assigned to a neighbouring community. The museum interprets the pattern as possible evidence for movement between groups and even potential aggression. It also notes that archaeological evidence for the relationship between these communities has been limited. This is an interpretation of distribution, not proof that an army crossed the site, that a particular raid took place, or that every coin travelled together from the same political centre.

Late Iron Age political names are themselves partly reconstructed from archaeology and later historical sources. “Catuvellauni” and “Trinovantes” are useful labels for discussing regional affiliations, but they should not be treated as modern nation-states with fixed borders. A hoard can reflect trade, tribute, migration, warfare, personal wealth, or the movement of people who carried coins far from where they were struck.

The unusual scale of the deposit makes those questions more visible. Hundreds of gold staters represent a concentration of wealth that is difficult to explain as casual loss. At the same time, the coins alone cannot show whether they were accumulated by a ruler, a household, a merchant, a military group, or a community. Their archaeological value lies partly in that combination of evidence and uncertainty: the metal and coin types are clear, while the social transaction behind them is not.

Why was the hoard buried?

No excavation result has established the purpose of the burial. Several explanations remain possible, and the evidence does not justify selecting one as the answer.

Explanation What it would mean What the investigation establishes
Safekeeping Someone concealed valuable property with the intention of recovering it later. Possible, but no evidence identifies an owner or demonstrates an intended return.
Ritual burial The coins were deliberately deposited as part of a religious act rather than hidden as a savings cache. Possible; no associated structure or object has confirmed a ritual setting.
Offering The deposit was given to a deity or placed in a meaningful location as a votive act. Possible, but the excavation did not reveal context proving an offering.
Tribute connected with Julius Caesar The coins may have been intended as payment during the Roman campaigns or their aftermath. A theory mentioned by the museum, not evidence of a documented payment or a specific encounter.

The Caesar connection is therefore one hypothesis among several. It is tempting because Roman intervention in Britain provides a familiar historical framework, but the hoard itself does not carry a label identifying a recipient or date of payment. The council’s account specifically lists safekeeping, ritual burial and offering alongside the tribute possibility.

Two questions posed by the museum capture the limits of the evidence: “Did the owner intend to return for the hoard but never managed to?” and “Was it part of a ritual burial?” Both are questions, not conclusions. A responsible account should preserve that uncertainty instead of turning an attractive story into a proven origin.

What the 2025 excavation discovered—and what it did not

The museum commissioned Archaeology South-East to investigate the findspot in autumn 2025. Archaeologists opened a two-metre-square trench and recovered the two additional Whaddon Chase staters. Their recovery confirms that more coins remained in the vicinity of the original find, but it did not reveal a larger burial structure, an identifiable container, or a sequence of deposits that explains how the hoard was assembled.

A magnetometer survey of the field also failed to identify a significant feature obviously related to the hoard. Geophysical survey can detect some buried disturbances, ditches, pits or metal-rich areas, but a negative result does not prove that the ground has never been altered. It means that this survey did not locate a feature that could confidently be tied to the deposit.

The investigation therefore improved the inventory without solving the central historical problem. Claire Willetts, Curatorial and Exhibitions Officer at the Museum of Chelmsford, said: “Though these additional coins are an incredibly exciting find, it seems that the Great Baddow Hoard findspot is yet to reveal all of its secrets.” She also said that, with no further evidence from the excavation, why the large sum was buried and never retrieved “will remain a great mystery for now.”

Those limits are important when interpreting the original fragments described as part of a possible vessel or container. They indicate that something may have held or accompanied the coins, but the published findings do not establish the vessel’s form, material, date, or whether it was deliberately placed with the money. The absence of a clear feature leaves the physical circumstances of burial open.

How the discovery relates to responsible detecting

The museum says the original find was made on private land without the landowner’s permission and that the finder initially failed to report it under the Treasure Act 1996. That detail is part of the hoard’s documented history, not a recommendation to detect in similar circumstances.

In England, potential Treasure must be reported to the local coroner for the district where it was found, normally through a Finds Liaison Officer. The British Museum describes the Portable Antiquities Scheme as a public-find recording scheme administered in England. Anyone who discovers archaeological material should use the current official Treasure Act and Portable Antiquities Scheme guidance for the relevant jurisdiction; reporting duties, time limits and ownership questions are legal matters, not something to infer from a news story about one hoard.

  • Record the exact findspot and keep associated objects together.
  • Do not clean, separate, sell or export a possible archaeological find before it has been assessed.
  • Contact a Finds Liaison Officer or the appropriate official authority promptly if an object may qualify as Treasure.

Following those steps protects archaeological information that can be lost when objects are removed without recording their location and relationships. The Great Baddow investigation shows why context matters: two coins can enlarge a hoard’s count while still leaving the reason for burial unknown.

Where can you see the Great Baddow Hoard?

The Museum of Chelmsford is presenting the collection in the temporary exhibition Timeless Treasures: Unlocking the Great Baddow Coin Hoard. The scheduled run is 18 July 2026 to 11 April 2027, and the council says all 935 coins are displayed together for the first time.

The museum plans to move the hoard to its Prehistory Gallery as a permanent display after the temporary exhibition. Exhibition schedules can change, so check the museum’s visitor information before travelling, especially if your visit is close to the closing date. The museum’s collection page is the appropriate place to confirm opening arrangements and any access requirements: museumofchelmsford.co.uk/exhibitions/collections/the-great-baddow-hoard/.

Seeing the coins together is more informative than viewing an isolated stater. The group’s scale, repeated Whaddon Chase type and concentration in one deposit are part of the evidence for interpreting movement and wealth. The display can show the material facts clearly, while the unanswered questions about ownership, intention and political events remain part of the story rather than gaps to be filled with speculation.

How was the museum able to acquire the additional coins?

The Museum of Chelmsford reports that the National Lottery Heritage Fund provided £250,000 in 2025 toward acquisition funding, alongside contributions from local and regional organisations. The published material does not give a separate valuation for each coin or a complete breakdown of every contribution, so the grant should not be read as a price tag for the hoard.

Acquisition allows the museum to reunite the two excavated staters with the original group for study and display. It also creates a stable public record of the current 935-coin assemblage. Future research may refine the classifications, production areas or chronology, but those conclusions would require evidence beyond the excavation results currently reported.

What the Great Baddow Hoard changes in the historical picture

The hoard does not provide a simple narrative of a Catuvellaunian invasion, a Trinovantian treasury, or a Roman tribute convoy. It does provide a large, securely documented body of coin evidence from a region where relationships between neighbouring late Iron Age communities are otherwise difficult to trace.

Its importance rests on three connected facts: the exceptional number of gold staters, the concentration of coins associated with a region outside Great Baddow’s traditional cultural attribution, and the opportunity to examine the assemblage as a group rather than as scattered finds. Together they support the museum’s interpretation that people, wealth or conflict moved across community boundaries. They do not identify which of those processes occurred, when the movement happened, or why the deposit was never recovered.

For now, the strongest conclusion is deliberately modest. Great Baddow preserves an unusually large late Iron Age concentration of gold, expanded from 933 coins to 935 through archaeological work at the findspot. The coins sharpen questions about eastern Britain’s political geography while the excavation leaves the central mystery intact: whether the buried wealth was meant to be reclaimed, dedicated, offered, or connected to a wider episode of power and tribute.
