Google published its Lunar New Year 2025 Doodle on January 29, marking the start of the Year of the Snake with a snake-shaped letter “G” and an explanation of holiday traditions. The company also created a separate South Korea version focused on Seollal. Both are archived features, not new 2026 celebrations.
What Google’s Year of the Snake Doodle showed
The official Lunar New Year 2025 Doodle appeared on January 29, 2025—the beginning of that year’s lunar new year, rather than the Gregorian year, which began on January 1. Its artwork shaped the letter “G” like a snake. Google described the Snake’s associations as “growth, creativity, and transformation.” Android Central characterized the design’s palette as orange, yellow, and pink; that color description comes from its coverage, not Google’s written explanation. (Android Central)
Google’s archive records the date and artwork concept. It also places the Doodle within a holiday celebrated in many Asian countries, rather than treating Lunar New Year as belonging to one culture alone. Google Arts & Culture likewise presents the celebration across a range of regional traditions. (Arts of Lunar New Year)
Traditions in Google’s Lunar New Year explainer
Google’s Doodle page says Lunar New Year has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years and describes it as a time to welcome early spring, gather with loved ones, exchange good wishes, and seek luck and prosperity. That historical span is Google’s characterization, not a precise date agreed on across every tradition.

The explainer highlights practices and symbols that vary among families and communities; they are not a checklist followed by everyone celebrating Lunar New Year. Google mentions:
- Cleaning and decorating homes, including with red lanterns and couplets.
- Family meals featuring foods such as fish, chicken, dumplings, sweet rice cakes, mandarin oranges, and pineapple.
- Red envelopes containing money, given with wishes for luck, laughter, and happiness.
- Firecrackers and loud noises, which Google connects to the traditional story of Nian, a mythical beast said to fear loud sounds.
The Nian account is a cultural legend, not documented history or a single explanation for all Lunar New Year customs. The holiday is celebrated in many places—including China, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines—and practices differ by region and community.

Google’s South Korea Doodle focused on Seollal
Alongside its broader Lunar New Year page, Google published a South Korea-specific Doodle on January 29, 2025. It names the holiday Seollal and highlights customs distinct to its Korean presentation.
The page describes sebae, in which younger family members bow to elders, and mentions traditional games including yunnori and jegichagi. It also refers to Korean foods such as tteokguk and jeon, alongside exchanges of gifts, fruit, flowers, decorations, and money. The separate page makes clear why “Lunar New Year” is useful as a broad label: local names and observances matter.

Was the Doodle a Snake game?
The official Doodle archive documents the artwork and its cultural explanation; it does not establish that the Doodle itself was a new standalone game. Android Central reported that searching Google for “Year of the Snake” could surface a Snake-style game. A Google Search Help Community thread later discussed the game disappearing, suggesting access was not consistent over time or across users. (Google Search Help Community)
It is therefore more accurate to treat the reported Search game as a related feature or easter egg, separate from the Doodle artwork. Those reports do not establish that it remains playable in 2026.
