Crunchyroll is the best overall anime app for most viewers in the United States. It combines an anime-first catalog, seasonal simulcasts, subtitles, selected dubs, movies and offline viewing on eligible plans. HIDIVE is the most useful specialist companion when it has an exclusive or niche title you want. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video and Max are better when you already pay for them or want their specific originals. Tubi, Pluto TV, RetroCrush and official YouTube channels fill free or classic-anime gaps.

This guide is US-focused. Streaming rights, languages, plan features and even app availability can change by country, title and licensing contract, so search for your exact show before subscribing.

Quick comparison

The services below are legitimate, licensed platforms or official publisher channels. “Yes” means the service has an official Android and iPhone app in the US at the time of writing; readers elsewhere should check their local app store. Download, dub and simulcast support can be limited by title, plan or region.

Crunchyroll Best overall anime app Yes Limited/promotional; verify current offer Strong Many titles; varies by series Eligible paid plans and titles Regional catalog and plan restrictions

1. Crunchyroll: best overall for anime

Crunchyroll is the default recommendation for a US viewer who wants one primary anime subscription. Its iPhone/iPad and Android apps emphasize seasonal simulcasts, a deep anime-focused catalog, subtitled and dubbed series, movies and mobile viewing. The App Store listing qualifies dub availability by series rather than promising every title in English.

  • Call of the Night - Premium Box Set [Blu-ray]

Why choose it

  • Strongest all-round mix of current-season shows, completed series and films.
  • Simulcasts and early access are available for selected new episodes, subject to licensing and production schedules.
  • Offline viewing is available on eligible paid tiers and supported content; downloads are not ownership.
  • Android help documentation includes Wi-Fi/cellular streaming controls. On mobile, downloaded items are managed through My Lists > Downloads.

Important limits

Catalogs, subtitle and dub languages, release timing and plan benefits vary by country and title. Downloads can be restricted by tier, device, storage and licensing window. Check the exact series before paying. Official references: iPhone app, Android app, Android support, iOS support and download guidance.

2. HIDIVE: best specialist companion

HIDIVE is the first service to check when a series is exclusive to it or when its niche catalog suits your taste. It promotes simulcasts and dubs and supports offline viewing on supported mobile devices and plans.

Best use case

Use HIDIVE alongside Crunchyroll when the shows you follow are split between the two services. It is less convincing as your only subscription if most of your watchlist is on Crunchyroll, Netflix or another platform.

Mobile and regional caveats

HIDIVE documents download paths for iPhone, iPad, Android and Fire devices: open the app menu and choose Downloads. Availability is not universal across countries, and language tracks and titles can differ by territory. See HIDIVE’s service page, iPhone app and offline-download instructions.

3. Netflix: best originals and exclusives

Netflix is a strong choice when anime originals, exclusive films or a polished all-purpose mobile app matter more than having the broadest anime-only library. Its download feature is useful on supported plans and titles, but release schedules often differ from weekly simulcast services: episodes may arrive in batches or later than their Japanese broadcast.

Choose it as an anime supplement if your household already subscribes. It is harder to justify solely for anime unless a specific exclusive is the reason.

4. Hulu: best US general-service mix

Hulu combines selected current-season and mainstream anime with a broad US television catalog. It can be good value for an existing subscriber who wants popular franchises without adding a specialist service. Anime selection and licensing are not as comprehensive as Crunchyroll’s, and Hulu is primarily a US service.

5. Disney+: best for selected exclusives and family viewing

Disney+ is not an anime specialist, but family profiles, parental controls and a household subscription can make it the practical choice for selected anime or anime-adjacent animation. Catalog and language availability differ substantially by country; verify the exact title and rating in your market.

6. Prime Video: best for existing Prime households

Prime Video places anime beside a very broad catalog, which is useful when you already pay for Prime or want a particular exclusive. Its listings can combine included-with-membership titles, add-on channels, rentals and purchases, so confirm the cost and access type on the title page. Downloads and language options are title and plan dependent.

7. Max: best for selected catalog titles

Max can be worthwhile for a specific anime or animation title, especially if the household already uses the service. It is a weaker anime-only choice because its selection is smaller and less predictable than dedicated platforms. Check current availability rather than relying on an old list.

8. RetroCrush: best classic-anime specialist

RetroCrush focuses on older and historically important anime. It is a better match for classic-series fans than for viewers whose priority is the newest seasonal episode. Some programming may be available free with ads, while premium access and downloads depend on the current offering and title.

9. Tubi: best free legal library

Tubi offers free, ad-supported viewing and can cover older or popular titles without another subscription. The catalog rotates, advertising interrupts playback and the newest simulcasts are generally not its strength. Treat it as a supplement, then search for the specific series before planning a binge.

Rank #4

10. Pluto TV: best free lean-back viewing

Pluto TV combines ad-supported channels with on-demand programming. It works well when you want to turn on an anime channel and browse casually, but schedules and rotating rights provide less control than an on-demand anime subscription. Availability varies by market.

11. YouTube: best official free-source supplement

Official distributor, studio and platform channels sometimes publish complete episodes, specials or promotional content legally. YouTube is easy to use on Android and iPhone, but there is no single anime catalog: each channel controls its own regions, languages and release schedule. Use verified official channels and do not assume that a search result is licensed merely because it is online.

12. iQIYI: best international alternative where available

iQIYI is most relevant to viewers seeking wider Asian entertainment, including selected animated and anime-style programming. Its Japanese-anime coverage, subtitles, downloads and subscription features vary substantially by country. Check the local catalog before treating it as an anime replacement.

Simulcasts, catalogs, exclusives and dubs explained

Simulcast is not “every new anime”

A simulcast episode arrives relatively soon after its Japanese broadcast, but licensing, translation, production delays and regional rights still apply. Catalog viewing covers completed series and films that can be added or removed at any time. Netflix and other general services may release a season in batches instead of weekly.

Dubs and subtitles are title-specific

Check the audio and subtitle menu for the exact season. A service may offer an English dub for one series, subtitles only for another, and different language tracks in another country. Dub releases can also lag behind subtitled episodes.

Exclusive means territory-specific

A show can be exclusive to one service in the US while appearing elsewhere in another country, or disappear when a contract changes. App-store access does not prove that every title is licensed in your territory.

Offline viewing on Android and iPhone

Downloads are temporary app-managed copies, not permanent ownership. They may expire, require periodic account verification, vanish when a license ends, or be unavailable for particular movies, series, plans or ad-supported content. Download over Wi-Fi, review storage settings and reconnect before a long trip so the app can validate your account.

  • Confirm that your plan includes downloads.
  • Check the download icon on the exact episode or film.
  • Leave enough phone storage for video files.
  • Respect simultaneous-device limits and account rules.
  • Do not expect downloaded files to play in another app.

Free versus paid: choose by viewing pattern

Tubi, Pluto TV, some RetroCrush programming and official YouTube uploads can provide legal free viewing with ads or a rotating selection. Crunchyroll, HIDIVE, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video and Max are paid services, although Prime may include some titles for members and other titles may cost extra. A trial or promotional tier is not the same as a permanent free catalog.

For value, count the incremental cost. An existing Netflix or Prime subscription may already cover occasional anime, while a viewer watching new episodes every week is more likely to benefit from a dedicated service. Prices, annual discounts, bundles and app-store promotions change; use the provider’s current signup screen instead of an old price table. Crunchyroll has multiple membership tiers, with offline viewing and simultaneous-stream features tied to eligible plans. Pricing-change context has been reported by Tom’s Guide; treat any quoted amount there as time-specific.

How to choose one primary app

  1. Current-season fan: Start with Crunchyroll, then add HIDIVE only if a must-watch exclusive is there.
  2. Exclusive or original seeker: Choose the platform carrying the exact title, often Netflix or a general streamer.
  3. Dub-focused viewer: Compare the audio menu for your intended shows; no service dubs everything.
  4. Classic-anime fan: Check RetroCrush first, then Tubi or other rotating catalogs.
  5. Free viewer: Begin with Tubi, Pluto TV and verified YouTube channels, accepting ads and less predictable availability.
  6. Family household: Weigh Disney+, Netflix or another existing service’s profiles and parental controls against a specialist catalog.
  7. International viewer: Search locally before subscribing; US rankings do not transfer automatically across borders.

Before you subscribe: an eight-point check

  1. Search for the exact show, season and movie.
  2. Confirm the desired subtitle or dub language.
  3. Check whether episodes arrive weekly or in a batch.
  4. Verify download support for that title, device and plan.
  5. Confirm the app is available in your country and on your Android or iPhone model.
  6. Check ads, profiles, parental controls and simultaneous-stream rules.
  7. Compare the incremental cost with services you already pay for.
  8. Remember where you started billing: Apple, Google or the provider. Cancellation and promotional terms can differ by billing route.

Are these apps legal?

The services listed here are official platforms or official publisher channels. An app-store listing alone does not guarantee that every title is licensed in every country. Avoid piracy-focused apps, unofficial aggregators, torrent clients and APK repositories that promise everything free; they create legal, security and account risks. Search within the service and use its official website or store listing before signing up.

The Bottom Line

For most US anime fans, subscribe to Crunchyroll first. Add HIDIVE only when its exclusive or niche catalog fills a real gap; use Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video or Max when an existing subscription or specific exclusive makes the economics better. For occasional or classic viewing, start with Tubi, Pluto TV, RetroCrush or verified YouTube channels—and always check your exact title before paying.
