Spotify announced a U.S. Premium price adjustment on June 3, 2024. The change covered Premium Individual, Duo, Family and Student plans. Spotify said the adjustment would support continued product investment and innovation, including value for listeners and artists; that is the company’s stated rationale, not independent evidence that the increase directly benefited artists. The announcement is documented in Spotify’s newsroom.

These figures come from Spotify’s June 3, 2024 announcement. The Individual increase was about 9.1% from the immediately preceding $10.99 price. A separate calculation sometimes described as a 20% increase compares $9.99, the pre-2023 Individual price, with $11.99 in 2024; it covers roughly two years rather than this single adjustment.

When existing subscribers were charged
Spotify said existing U.S. subscribers would receive an email during the month after the announcement. Spotify’s price-update guidance says subscribers receive a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price applies.
News reports commonly described the change as taking effect in July 2024, but there was no single billing date for every customer. Spotify says the billing date depends on when an account’s subscription began, so the first higher charge could differ by account. Subscribers should check the billing date shown on their account rather than assume a particular calendar day.

- Audiobooks Access: $9.99 per month for audiobook listening while music remains on the free, ad-supported service.
Basic was therefore not simply a universal replacement for Premium Individual. Eligibility, account history and availability can determine whether it appears as an option.
What Spotify costs now
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page, checked August 18, 2026, listed Premium Individual at $12.99 per month after the introductory offer. That makes the current listed price $1 more than the 2024 $11.99 rate, or about 8.3% higher. Promotional offers, taxes, plan availability and billing channels can change, so treat the page as the current price reference rather than assuming an introductory deal is permanent. Spotify also announced another pricing update on January 15, 2026, affecting subscribers in the United States, Estonia and Latvia. That notice directed new subscribers to the local Premium page for current pricing instead of publishing a complete U.S. price table. The announcement is at Spotify’s January 2026 newsroom post.

What to do if you do not want the higher charge
- Check your billing date: open your Spotify account page and confirm when the next payment is scheduled.
- Cancel before that date: use Spotify’s cancellation instructions and allow for any app-store billing rules if Apple or Google processes the subscription.
- Review eligible plans: Basic, Student or another paid plan may appear depending on your account and eligibility. Duo and Family are intended for people who meet Spotify’s household requirements, not unrestricted sharing among unrelated addresses.
- Use the free tier: you can continue listening with ads and the limitations of Spotify’s ad-supported service.
- Consider gift-card limits: Spotify says gift cards can be redeemed only for Premium Individual, not Duo, Family or Student.
Taxes may affect the final amount based on location and billing method. A subscription billed through an app store may also have different management steps from one billed directly by Spotify.
Is the $11.99 plan worth it?
There is no universal value verdict. Consider:
- How often you listen and whether ad-free, offline playback and unlimited skips matter.
- Whether Spotify’s discovery tools, playlists, Wrapped, DJ and social features are important to you.
- Whether the plan’s audiobook allowance is useful in your household.
- Whether you qualify for Student pricing and can complete Spotify’s verification process.
- Whether a legitimate Duo or Family arrangement fits your household and usage.
- How well Spotify works with your phone, car, speakers and television compared with alternatives such as Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal or Pandora.
At the historical $11.99 rate, Premium Individual cost $143.88 per year before tax. At the $12.99 price listed in August 2026, it costs $155.88 per year before tax. Those totals are simple monthly-price calculations and exclude promotions, taxes and any billing variation.

“Spotify to increase premium pricing in the US to $11.99 per month” was accurate as a description of Spotify’s June 3, 2024 announcement. It is misleading as a present-tense 2026 headline. The 2024 change raised Individual to $11.99, Duo to $16.99 and Family to $19.99, while Student stayed at $5.99; Spotify’s U.S. page later listed Individual at $12.99 after the introductory offer.
