Google’s Earth Day bee game was an interactive Doodle launched on April 22, 2020, for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. You guide a bee through a scrolling landscape, collect colored pollen, and deliver each color to the matching flower. Google created it with The Honeybee Conservancy. The official archive is Google’s Earth Day 2020 Doodle page, although the temporary homepage promotion should not be confused with a guaranteed current game in 2026.
What was Google’s Earth Day bee game?
It was a browser-based Google Doodle, not a downloadable commercial game. The player controls a cartoon bee moving among flowers, trees and bushes. Flowers release pollen in different colors; carrying that pollen to a flower of the corresponding color completes pollination and makes the target bloom. Educational fact segments explain bees and the plants and food systems they support.
Google described the environment as randomly generated so the experience could continue rather than finish after a fixed set of levels. The game was made with The Honeybee Conservancy, a New York-based organization.
When did it launch?
The Doodle launched on April 22, 2020, Earth Day’s annual date and the event’s 50th anniversary. A 2022 TechRadar report said Google displayed the same or substantially similar experience again and characterized it as a recycled two-year-old Doodle; that is a publication’s report, not evidence of a separately announced new game. #1 Best Overall
- The animal's coats are meticulously hand-cut and trimmed, never stamped out by machine
- Cute Bee plush doll
- size:17cm
How to play
- Open the archived Earth Day 2020 Doodle and start the interactive experience.
- Move the bee with a mouse or cursor, or by touching the screen on a supported touchscreen device.
- Hover over a flower releasing pollen. The bee automatically picks up a pollen ball.
- Find a flower that needs pollen of the same color.
- Stay over that flower until pollination finishes; passing over it briefly may not be enough.
- Continue as the landscape scrolls, and read the bee facts shown between gameplay sections.
Gameplay mechanics and practical tips
The following details come from hands-on gameplay reporting rather than Google’s formal Doodle description.
Manage the pollen you carry
The bee can carry up to three pollen balls. Picking up another when the inventory is full displaces the oldest one, so avoid collecting an unnecessary color when a useful target is already in view.

Plan around the scrolling landscape
Flowers can move off-screen as the world scrolls. Pollinate higher or earlier targets before spending too long gathering more pollen, especially when the matching flower is near an edge.
Hold position over the target
Pollination is not always instantaneous. Keep the bee over the matching flower until the action completes instead of immediately flying away.

Expect an open-ended experience
Google designed the world to continue indefinitely. There is no advertised conventional final level, so the absence of an ending is normal rather than a failure.
Why was it described as relaxing?
Coverage from 9to5Google called it a relaxing game because it has no combat, gentle music and buzzing, simple movement, and a low-pressure goal: route the bee between flowers. The real challenge is matching colors and managing the limited pollen carried by the bee. “Relaxing” is a subjective description of the experience, not a scientific measurement.

What the Doodle taught about bees
Google said the Doodle was intended to teach facts about bees and the planet they help sustain. In material associated with the 2020 project, The Honeybee Conservancy stated that bees pollinate roughly one in three bites of food people eat, that about 20,000 bee species exist worldwide, and that one in four of North America’s roughly 4,000 native bee species was considered at risk at that time. Those are historical claims published in 2020, not newly verified 2026 statistics.
The educational message also distinguishes managed honeybees from native bees. Many native species are solitary and depend on suitable soil, plant stems, cavities, and continuous flowering habitat rather than a beekeeper’s hive.

Can you still play it?
The safest place to look is the official archived page: doodles.google/doodle/earth-day-2020. Google Doodles are temporary homepage features, so searching Google on Earth Day does not guarantee that this 2020 game will appear. Archive functionality can vary by country, browser, device, language setting and whether the interactive asset remains available. If it does not load, try a current desktop browser, check that script blocking is not preventing the Doodle from running, and test mouse or touch input; these are practical suggestions, not guaranteed Google support fixes. The broader Google Doodles library can help you find other archived interactive Doodles.
How to help bees beyond the game
The Doodle’s partner suggested actions that do not require keeping a hive:
- Support a local beekeeper or donate time or money to an environmental organization.
- Create safe nesting places for native bees by preserving suitable soil, stems and cavities.
- Set out a shallow bee bath with stones so insects can land safely while drinking.
- Plant a pollinator garden with varied flowers that bloom across multiple seasons.
These measures address the needs of both managed honeybees and the many native species that rely on habitat and food access.
