1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—Spotify says its ad-supported Free tier now lets listeners search for and start individual songs on demand. The company announced the “Pick & Play” and “Search & Play” features on September 15, 2025, describing them as a global rollout. That removes the most frustrating part of Spotify’s old mobile experience, but it does not make Free equivalent to Premium.
What changed for Spotify Free
Spotify’s announcement says Free users can choose a song directly instead of being forced to begin with shuffle playback. You can search for a track, open the result and start that recording, or select a song from supported Spotify pages and sharing surfaces. Spotify calls these capabilities “Search & Play” and “Pick & Play.”
The announcement confirms selecting and starting a song. It does not promise unlimited on-demand listening, identical controls on every device, or unrestricted control of everything that plays afterward.
How to play a specific song on a Free account
- Open Spotify while signed in to your Free account.
- Choose Search.
- Enter the song, artist, album or version you want.
- Open the matching track.
- Tap or click its play control.
- Check that the selected recording starts rather than an unrelated randomized sequence.
You can also open a playlist or another Spotify page and select an individual track when the interface exposes that option. Labels and controls can differ between the mobile app, desktop app, web player and connected devices.

Is the rollout available everywhere?
Spotify describes the Free update as rolling out globally, but “global” does not mean every account and device displays exactly the same controls at the same time. Availability can depend on your country, app version, account rollout, device and licensing.
The catalog itself also differs by market. Spotify says music availability can vary between countries and change over time; a searchable result may therefore be unavailable in your region. See Spotify’s catalog-availability guidance for that limitation.

What Free still does not include
The song-selection update changes how playback can begin. It does not remove the principal differences Spotify uses to distinguish Premium.
| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Choose a specific song | Yes, according to Spotify’s September 2025 announcement | Yes |
| Audio advertising | Yes | No |
| Offline music downloads | No | Yes |
| Full queue and playback control | Not fully specified by the announcement | Spotify markets full control, including repeat, album ordering and unlimited skips |
| Country-specific catalog restrictions | Yes | Yes |
| Lossless audio | Not established as a Free benefit | Available on supported Premium experiences |
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists ad-free listening, offline music, full control over what plays next, repeat, playing albums in any order and unlimited skips. Its offline-downloads page says Free users can download podcasts, but downloading music requires Premium.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “finally” needs some context
Free users did have limited on-demand access before this change. Spotify’s 2018 Free redesign described on-demand listening in selected personalized and editorial playlists, but that was not the same as choosing any track across the service. Spotify for Artists’ 2018 explanation documents that earlier arrangement.

The 2025 announcement is broader: Spotify says Free listeners can search for and play any available song they want. “Finally” is fair shorthand for broader direct selection, not proof that Free never offered on-demand playback.
If selecting a song still does not work
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then sign out and back in.
- Search for an individual track instead of pressing a playlist’s general Play button.
- Try the same account in another supported Spotify client.
- Test another song to determine whether the issue affects the account or one release.
- Check whether the recording is available in your country.
- Reinstall only after noting your login details, settings and any downloaded podcasts.
If the selected track starts but the next song is randomized, that does not necessarily contradict Spotify’s announcement. Spotify confirms choosing the first song; it does not promise that Free includes Premium’s complete queue, repeat and skip controls.

Free is probably enough if you
- Only need to choose a particular song occasionally.
- Accept audio advertising.
- Usually have an internet connection.
- Do not need offline music for travel or unreliable coverage.
- Can tolerate less predictable control over the following queue.
Premium is still worthwhile if you
- Listen for long periods and want uninterrupted playback.
- Need music downloads for flights, commuting or poor connections.
- Want reliable album ordering, repeat and queue controls.
- Use Spotify as your primary daily music service.
- Want supported higher-quality or lossless playback.
The practical verdict is simple: Spotify Free now appears to solve the specific “I want to play this song” problem. Premium remains the better fit when you also want no ads, offline music and broader control over what plays next.
