Google released its Year in Search 2024 findings on December 10, 2024. The interactive hub lets you explore results by country and category; Google’s announcement highlights global trends and selected U.S. examples. These are trends that gained attention, not necessarily the queries with the highest total search volume.
What Google’s Year in Search shows
The annual roundup organizes Google search trends by geography and subject. Its findings are not one universal leaderboard: a result may be global, U.S.-specific, tied to a particular category, or associated with a search surface such as Maps. The 2024 edition is a historical record of that year, not a newly released report.

These labels matter: the election result is the news-category leader, for example, not a claim that it was the single most searched phrase in every category or country.

U.S. examples are a separate view
Google’s summary also called out U.S.-specific trends. Usher was the top trending musician in the United States after his Super Bowl halftime performance, and “demure meaning” became a notable search after a viral social-media moment. Election-related interest also featured prominently in the U.S. picture. For the full category lists, open the United States view rather than assuming that global results represent American rankings.
How to browse the full results
- Open the Year in Search 2024 hub.
- Choose the Global view or select a country from the available locations.
- Open the category relevant to your question, such as news, sports, movies, songs, or people.
- Check the geography and search surface shown before quoting a result.
The hub includes many country views, but not every location has published results. Google also said its Local Year in Search coverage included more than 200 U.S. metropolitan areas. A country or city list should not be assumed to exist just because the selector offers other places.
Search went beyond typed queries
Google’s 2024 recap also covered visual and location-based search. It highlighted Lens and Circle to Search for translation, shopping, and identifying objects; users often paired visual searches with “how to use.” In Maps categories, Arena di Verona was the top searched stadium, while Las Vegas’ Sphere led the cited U.S. visitor-attraction category. These results describe particular products and categories, not the same pool as a general web-search ranking.
What “trending” means—and what it does not
Google calls these “top trending searches.” A trend is a query that gained notable attention or momentum during the year; it should not automatically be read as a complete ranking by raw number of searches. Google’s public roundup does not, in the cited pages, establish that each result is the year’s highest-volume query.
Search interest also is not a measure of approval, sales, votes, or importance. People may search for a public figure or event because they support it, oppose it, want an explanation, or are following breaking news. Treat the lists as a snapshot of what attracted attention, not a poll of what people believe.

Year in Search is Google’s trends roundup, not an individual user’s watch or photo history. Google’s other 2024 retrospectives, such as its Google Photos Recap, are separate product features and should not be confused with the Search report.
