The first rollout began in the United States and Canada in English and French on TCL QM9K sets, with Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn. 4K Pro, selected 2025 Hisense models and additional TCL models following. Whether you can speak hands-free depends on your exact hardware, Android TV version, memory, country, language and Google Home setup.
What Gemini changes on Google TV
Google says Gemini keeps existing Google Assistant functions while allowing more natural, multi-turn conversations. Instead of issuing one rigid command, you can describe what you want, ask follow-up questions and refine the result.
- Find a film that suits people with different tastes.
- Identify a show from a plot or scene description.
- Recap an earlier season before you start the next one.
- Brainstorm a trip or ask a complicated homework question.
- Get learning, do-it-yourself and recipe guidance, including YouTube videos on supported devices.
Google vice president Shalini GovilPai described the goal as moving beyond simple commands to “free-flowing conversations with your big screen.” Google said in 2025 that more than 300 million Google TV and other Android TV OS devices were active, but that figure does not mean all of them qualify for Gemini.
When Gemini is available
Initial launch
Google announced Gemini for TV on September 22, 2025. The initial availability was in the United States and Canada, in English and French, on TCL QM9K televisions.

Google TV Streamer rollout
On November 10, 2025, Google said Gemini was beginning to roll out to Google TV Streamer (4K) over the following weeks. On the Streamer, the remote microphone button can start conversational searches and requests for learning, DIY or recipe help.
Other named devices
Google listed these products for a later 2025 rollout:
- Walmart onn. 4K Pro
- 2025 Hisense U7, U8 and UX televisions
- 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K and X11K televisions
Google also said more devices, countries and languages were planned for 2026. A model appearing on that list is not, by itself, a guarantee that every regional variant or software build has the feature; check the device’s current Google TV and manufacturer support information.
Do you need a new TV?
No. If your existing television has no Gemini support, Google TV Streamer (4K) is the clearest way to add the service to a compatible display. The Streamer has a remote microphone button and received Google’s announced Gemini rollout. Buying a new television is another route, but eligibility is tied to the specific model and its software, not simply to the words “Google TV” on the box.
What “more microphones” actually means
Google’s wording refers to microphone access across compatible hardware, not a universal microphone upgrade for every Google TV. Depending on the product, the active microphone may be built into the television, the remote or a connected streamer. You can mute the microphone.
On hardware with hands-free capability, “Hey Google” can work while the TV is on or on standby. If the product does not provide hands-free listening, pressing the microphone button on the remote remains the supported way to invoke Gemini. The manufacturer’s design therefore determines whether you can speak naturally from across the room or must hold the remote.

Eligibility checklist
Google TV Help lists the following baseline requirements:
- A Google TV device running Android TV OS 14 or later.
- At least 2 GB of RAM.
- A supported country and language.
- The television or streamer added to Google Home.
- An eligible user profile. Gemini responses are limited to profiles associated with people aged 18 or older; children’s profiles receive Google Assistant responses.
To manage the feature on an eligible device, open Settings > Accounts & Profiles > your account > Voice assistant. Google says that removing the device from Google Home returns it to Google Assistant.
Which features are planned or limited
Google previewed additional capabilities at CES 2026. Availability varies by device, region, language and account settings.
| Capability | Availability or requirement stated by Google |
|---|---|
| Conversational search and follow-up questions | Available on Gemini-enabled Google TV devices; the Streamer rollout includes remote-button access. |
| Learning, DIY and recipe help with YouTube videos | Included in the Google TV Streamer rollout announcement. |
| Deep dives and news or sports briefs | Gemini-enabled devices in the United States, English only. |
| Google Photos search and Photos Remix | Gemini-enabled device, United States, English, age 18+, Google Photos account and Personal results enabled. |
| Nano Banana image creation and Veo video creation | Previewed for Google TV; Google said features would arrive first on select TCL devices and then other Google TV devices. |
| Visual answers with images, videos and live sports updates | Previewed at CES 2026; rollout timing depends on device and region. |
| Natural-language picture and sound controls | Google lists launch support on TCL QM9K, X11L, QM9L, QM8L and RM9L models. |
Voice picture and sound controls on supported TCL models
On the listed TCL models, Google gives examples such as:
- “Set picture mode to Sport.”
- “Increase the bass.”
- “The screen is too dark.”
- “I can’t hear the dialogue clearly.”
These commands are model-specific launch support, not a promise that every Gemini television can change every picture or audio setting by voice.

Choose a streamer when you want to keep your current TV
Google TV Streamer (4K) is the most direct upgrade path identified by Google. It avoids replacing a functioning screen, but voice access still depends on using its remote unless your overall setup provides hands-free hardware.

Choose a television with a built-in microphone when hands-free use matters
A compatible TV with an integrated microphone can support “Hey Google” while powered on or in standby. Confirm the exact model, regional variant and microphone mute controls before buying.
Choose remote-button access when privacy is the priority
A remote microphone button lets you invoke Gemini only when you press it. This is less convenient than hands-free listening but avoids leaving a device’s microphone active for wake-word detection.
Privacy, accuracy and profile limits
Google warns that Gemini responses may be inaccurate, offensive or inappropriate. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. When Web & App Activity is enabled, interactions are saved under Google Assistant activity and can be deleted from your Google Account.
Because children’s profiles receive Google Assistant responses rather than Gemini responses, the experience can differ between profiles on the same television.

What to check before buying or troubleshooting
- Open the device information screen and verify Android TV OS 14 or newer.
- Confirm that the device has at least 2 GB of RAM.
- Check Google’s current Gemini availability for your country and language.
- Add the television or streamer to Google Home.
- In Settings > Accounts & Profiles > your account > Voice assistant, look for Gemini-related options.
- Check whether your hardware has a built-in microphone, a microphone-equipped remote or only remote-button activation, and make sure the mute switch is not engaged.
- If the option is missing, verify that you are using an adult profile and that the device has received its latest system and manufacturer updates.
The Bottom Line
Gemini makes Google TV more conversational, but microphone behavior and feature access are hardware- and region-specific. You do not automatically need a new television: Google TV Streamer (4K) is the clearest announced route for adding Gemini to an existing screen, while hands-free “Hey Google” requires compatible microphone hardware.
