YouTube Music has not made song lyrics a paid feature for everyone. In February 2026, Google confirmed it was testing limits on lyric access for a small percentage of ad-supported users. Reports described some users getting about five lyric openings before the app blurred most of the words and prompted them to subscribe. Google said the allowance could vary and that most users would not see a change.
What happens in the test?
For affected free users, the lyrics panel may initially work as usual. After a limited number of openings, only the first lines may remain readable while the rest are obscured, alongside a prompt to subscribe. Ars Technica’s February 9 report showed a remaining-view counter and described a limit of five in some cases.
That figure is an observed example, not a universal quota. Google told Ars Technica that the number of free lyric views may vary. The reported behavior concerns some ad-supported users in the YouTube Music app; the available evidence does not establish that every account, song, device, or platform follows the same workflow.

A test, not a confirmed global policy
Google characterized the change as an experiment affecting a small share of ad-supported users. It said the vast majority of users around the world would not see a change. The report did not establish a completed global rollout or a final decision to keep the restriction.

So, if lyrics still work on your account, that does not disprove the test. If one account sees a limit and another does not, that is also consistent with an experiment. The careful description is that Google is testing limits on lyrics for some free users—not that lyrics are now universally locked behind Premium.
What the test does—and does not—tell us about Premium
The app’s reported subscription prompt makes Premium appear to be the intended way to get past the restriction. But Google’s official YouTube Music overview lists Premium benefits such as ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback, and downloads; it does not clearly list lyrics access as a standard benefit.
That omission does not prove paid subscribers can never access lyrics, nor does it settle how the experiment behaves for them. It does mean readers should not treat lyrics as a clearly documented, permanent Premium entitlement on the strength of this test alone. Check the current plan details shown for your account before subscribing solely for lyrics.

Music Premium or YouTube Premium?
YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused subscription. Its published benefits include ad-free listening, background play, audio-only playback, and downloads. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits as well as broader YouTube benefits, including ad-free video, background playback, and downloads, according to YouTube’s plan information.
Ars Technica reported U.S. prices of about $11 a month for YouTube Music Premium and $14 for YouTube Premium on February 9, 2026. Those are dated price reports, not a guarantee of what a reader will pay now. Prices may differ by country, taxes, plan eligibility, and billing channel. Check the YouTube Music Premium signup page and YouTube Premium signup page for the offer and renewal price shown to you.
Choose the music-only plan if music features are what you want. The broader plan may make more sense if you also watch enough YouTube video to value its benefits. Neither choice should be treated as a guaranteed lyrics purchase unless the current terms for your account make that explicit.

Eligible users may see a trial or promotion, but its length and terms vary, and subscriptions generally renew at the applicable price unless canceled. Read the offer and renewal terms at signup; YouTube’s trial information explains eligibility and promotions. YouTube also lists prepaid, non-recurring annual plans for eligible individual users in the United States and other markets; availability and conditions vary, so check its annual-plan information.
Why test a lyrics limit?
The commercial possibilities are straightforward: a restriction could encourage some regular users to subscribe, and it could test whether lyrics access is valuable enough to influence that decision. Ars Technica also noted that lyrics are supplied by third parties and cost Google money. Lowering licensing costs is therefore a plausible business rationale, but Google did not confirm that as the reason for this experiment.
Lyrics may look like a small interface feature, yet they matter to people singing along, learning a language, following unfamiliar songs, or using music for karaoke. Restricting a familiar utility can provoke a stronger reaction than adding an ad or limiting a less visible feature.

Spotify provides precedent, not a prediction
Spotify restricted lyrics for some free users in 2024 and later restored access after negative reaction, according to the Ars Technica report. That shows a service can reverse a lyrics restriction; it does not establish that Google will do the same. Each company’s test, audience response, licensing arrangements, and business decisions may differ.
How to check whether your account is affected
This is a way to observe your account, not an official Google diagnostic procedure:
- Open YouTube Music while signed in to the Google account you want to check.
- Play a track that normally has lyrics and open its lyrics panel.
- Look for a remaining-view counter, then note whether it changes as you open lyrics on other tracks.
- If possible, check the same account on another supported device or in the web player. The available reporting does not establish that the test works identically across app and web.
- Record your country or region, device and operating system, app version, account type, and whether that account has previously subscribed. This information can help distinguish an account-specific test from a song or app issue.
If lyrics are missing or blurred
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and that YouTube Music is up to date.
- Try another track. Some songs may have no lyrics or incomplete lyric information; that is different from lyrics that are visible but blurred after a limit.
- Close and reopen the app, then check another device or the web player if available. These checks may help identify where the problem occurs, but they are not confirmed ways to reset the experiment.
- If you already pay for Premium and see behavior that conflicts with the plan terms shown to you, contact YouTube support.
- Do not count on clearing the cache, reinstalling the app, changing accounts, or using a VPN to restore access. No reliable reset or bypass is established. YouTube’s country-verification guidance also warns that a VPN or proxy can interfere with country verification.
One missing song is not proof of a paywall. The useful distinction is whether a track has no lyrics, lyrics are temporarily unavailable, or lyrics are present but become obscured after a usage limit.

Should you subscribe?
Paying may be sensible if you already use YouTube Music heavily and also value its published Premium benefits, or if you watch enough YouTube video for the broader plan to be worthwhile. If lyrics are occasional, you are not affected, or you would be subscribing only to defeat an experiment whose long-term status is unsettled, waiting is a reasonable choice.
If lyric access is essential to how you use a music service, compare alternatives based on their current lyrics policies and the features you actually need. This report does not establish current competitor prices or policies, so check those directly rather than assuming another service will be cheaper or offer a particular level of lyric access.
What remains unclear
The reporting does not establish how often any allowance resets, whether it is counted per account, song, day, or device, or whether the restriction follows an account across platforms. It also does not provide a complete country-by-country or Android, iOS, and web rollout map. The final quota, the experiment’s duration, and whether Google will formally list lyrics as a Premium benefit remain unsettled in the cited material. Treat the behavior you see as account- and test-dependent, not as proof of a permanent rule for every listener.
