Goodrich has a familiar setup: a distracted father is suddenly responsible for young children and gets a chance to make amends with the adult daughter he neglected. Michael Keaton gives that well-worn premise warmth and comic texture, while Mila Kunis lends its father-daughter story needed weight. The film is cozy and emotionally approachable, though its familiar construction keeps its discoveries modest.
What is Goodrich about?
Andy Goodrich (Keaton) is a Los Angeles art dealer whose life is upended when his wife enters a 90-day rehabilitation program. He finds himself caring for their nine-year-old twins and turns to Grace (Kunis), his adult daughter from his first marriage, for help. Andy’s sudden immersion in hands-on parenting runs alongside a more difficult task: facing the years he was absent from Grace’s life.

Grace is preparing for a child of her own, which gives the reunion a pointed question beyond whether Andy can manage the twins’ routines: can she trust him to show up now? That tension is the film’s strongest dramatic thread. The children create immediate comic disruption; Grace’s history with Andy gives the story its emotional stakes.
Does Michael Keaton save the familiar plot?
Keaton is the film’s most reliable source of momentum. Andy is not a polished late-in-life hero but a man accustomed to being busy, charming, and elsewhere. Keaton makes that evasiveness legible without flattening the character into a scoldable stereotype. His comic ease helps the domestic upheaval feel light, while his more vulnerable moments make Andy’s belated effort at change feel like an attempt rather than a magical fix.

- Top Gun (Idolos del aire)
The premise is well-worn because its turns are easy to recognize: a self-involved parent is forced into caregiving, and family chaos becomes an occasion for growth. Goodrich does not reinvent that structure. Its better choice is to make the adult daughter’s perspective central to whether Andy’s new attentiveness means anything. Grace is not simply there to congratulate him for finally noticing his family; she has reason to be cautious.
Do Keaton and Mila Kunis make the relationship feel specific?
Kunis gives Grace a guardedness that keeps the reconciliation from becoming too easy. Andy can be newly attentive to the twins and still have to reckon with what Grace remembers. The film’s most meaningful friction comes from that mismatch: his present-day intentions cannot erase her experience of his earlier absence.

That choice lends the cozy tone some welcome resistance. Andy’s effort matters, but the film’s setup does not make an apology equivalent to repair or guarantee that trust returns on cue. The story is most persuasive when it lets Grace’s doubts remain part of the relationship rather than treating her as a lesson Andy has already learned.
How well does the comedy balance the emotion?
The comedy grows naturally from Andy being unprepared for the demands of caring for young children. It gives the film an easy, approachable rhythm, and Keaton is well suited to playing a man whose confidence outpaces his practical readiness. But the same warmth that makes Goodrich comfortable also softens its edges. The film favors familiar, reassuring beats over a more searching examination of how long-standing family hurt changes over time.

Writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer has said she was interested in parenting across different decades and in complicated father-daughter relationships. In an Associated Press interview published October 17, 2024, she connected the premise to her own experience of her father remarrying and having another set of children. That context helps explain why the film pairs the immediate demands of young children with an adult daughter’s older grievance. It does not make the storytelling unfamiliar, but it clarifies the personal concern beneath the comedy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Goodrich worth watching?
Yes, if a warm family dramedy led by Keaton sounds appealing. He gives the familiar setup personality, and Kunis helps keep the reconciliation from being only a vehicle for his character’s growth. Viewers looking for a sharper or more surprising take on parental absence may find the film too comfortable. Its strengths are performance and accessibility, not structural novelty.
