Kindle books have not disappeared from Android. On a standard Android phone or tablet, Amazon’s current guidance is to buy Kindle editions in a web browser—not in the Amazon Shopping app or the Google Play version of the Kindle app. Once purchased, a title should appear in the Kindle library when the app is signed into the same Amazon account and synced.
What changed—and what did not
The missing purchase button is usually a change in the purchase route, not evidence that Kindle books or Android reading are ending. Amazon still sells Kindle editions, and purchased titles can be read in the Kindle app and on compatible Kindle devices. Amazon’s current buying guidance directs customers to use a browser for purchases.
- Amazon Shopping app: You may be unable to complete a Kindle e-book purchase there, or you may be directed to Amazon’s website.
- Kindle app from Google Play: It remains useful for reading, library access, samples, and discovery. Google Play’s Kindle listing directs readers to Amazon.com to buy books.
- Web browser: This is the dependable purchase route for ordinary Android app installations.
- Kindle e-reader or Fire tablet: Some devices offer an integrated Kindle Store, but store availability varies by device and region. See Amazon’s Kindle e-reader buying help.
Browsing and buying are separate: the Kindle app may show a book or let you read a sample, then send you to Amazon’s website to complete the transaction.

Mobile app stores have rules governing digital purchases and billing, which form part of the wider context for app-based purchasing restrictions. However, Amazon’s current public guidance cited here does not establish that this specific Android restriction exists solely to avoid a particular app-store commission. It is more accurate to treat that explanation as industry context, not a confirmed Amazon statement.

Amazon’s older forum answers are not always consistent with its current consumer guidance. Historical differences in Android app editions or distribution channels may also matter, so do not assume every version behaved identically. For a typical Google Play installation today, use the browser route.
Buy a Kindle book in an Android browser
- Open Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet, or another browser on your Android device.
- Go to Amazon’s Kindle Store or your local Amazon marketplace and sign in with the same Amazon account used in the Kindle app or on your Kindle device.
- Search for the title or author and open the book’s product page.
- Select the Kindle edition. Check the format carefully; paperback, hardcover, and Audible editions are different products.
- Choose the Kindle purchase control, such as Buy now, and complete checkout.
- Open the Kindle app, go to your library, and use Sync if the book is not already listed.
- Tap the cover to download the book for offline reading.
Amazon’s help for buying books for the Kindle app likewise describes purchasing in a browser. If a product page opens in the Amazon app instead, use the browser’s option to open the page in a new tab or request its desktop site; exact browser labels differ.

Purchased book missing from the Kindle library?
Work through these checks before reinstalling the app:
- Check the account. Confirm the browser checkout and Kindle app use the same Amazon account. A different account or regional marketplace can leave the book in another library.
- Verify the order and format. Check Amazon order history or digital-content management and make sure the transaction completed and the item is a Kindle edition—not an audiobook or print book.
- Check the library view. Switch to All rather than a downloaded-only view, and check whether a collection filter is hiding the title.
- Connect and sync. Make sure the app has internet access and run its Sync command. Restart the app if needed.
- Deliver the book manually. On Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page, open Content or Your Content, find the title, and choose Deliver or Deliver to Default Device. Select the intended Kindle device or app where available, then sync again. Labels and options can vary by marketplace and account.
- Update the app. If the account, order, and delivery are correct, update Kindle and try syncing again. Reinstall only as a last resort: locally downloaded books will need to be downloaded again.
If the purchase button is unavailable in the browser too, check that the Kindle edition is offered in your marketplace and that your account has a valid payment method. Titles, prices, and availability can vary by country.

Kindle Unlimited is borrowing, not buying
Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription for eligible participating titles, not a way to purchase every Kindle book. Look for the Kindle Unlimited badge or use the relevant catalogue filter. Borrowed titles can be read in the Kindle app on Android, but access depends on an eligible subscription and the title remaining available in the catalogue; borrowing does not give you permanent ownership.
Amazon’s current Kindle Unlimited help says members may borrow up to 20 titles at a time. It also says that beginning April 22, 2026, each borrowed magazine issue counts toward that limit, with excess titles to be automatically returned by July 30, 2026. Those dates concern magazine borrowing, not the browser method for buying an individual Kindle book.

Should you try another Kindle app version?
Historical reports suggest that Android app editions obtained through channels other than Google Play may once have behaved differently. Current official consumer guidance does not confirm a reliable alternate-store version that restores in-app purchases for every country or device. Do not treat an Amazon Appstore or Samsung Galaxy Store edition as a guaranteed fix, and avoid unofficial APK downloads: sideloading can create security, compatibility, account, and update risks. The browser purchase is the safer, documented route.

Want to buy books inside an Android app instead?
Google Play Books supports in-app e-book purchases: open the app, search for a book, select it, and tap its price, as described in Google Play’s help. But a Google Play Books purchase belongs to Google’s book ecosystem; it is not a Kindle purchase and generally is not meant to be read in the Kindle app or delivered to a Kindle e-reader.

Kobo is another separate e-book store and reading ecosystem. Libby is different again: it lets readers borrow available digital titles through participating libraries, subject to local membership and licensing. Neither alternative turns a purchase or loan into a Kindle Store book. If you already have a Kindle library, changing stores means accepting that ecosystem distinction.
A Kindle e-reader may offer an integrated store on supported devices, but buying hardware is optional—not a requirement to keep reading Kindle books on Android. Choose a dedicated device for its reading experience, not simply to work around the app purchase flow.
