Golden-Collared Manakin Courtship: How Wing Snaps and Split-Second Timing Win Mates

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Male golden-collared manakins court females on carefully prepared forest-floor stages. A male clears a small court, displays his yellow throat, then darts between saplings in an arc while clapping his wings overhead to produce a sharp snap. The performance takes place in a communal lek, and the available evidence indicates that females assess not only appearance but also the speed and timing of the routine.

Those conclusions need careful attribution. The figures most often quoted—about 1,300 heartbeats per minute, roughly one-fifth of body mass lost during a six- to seven-week courting period, and female discrimination of timing differences measured in tens to hundreds of milliseconds—come from a 2011 National Audubon Society account of a study, not from a primary paper independently verified here.

The dance begins with a stage

A golden-collared manakin does not simply start displaying wherever it happens to land. Males gather in leks, small areas where several individuals perform for visiting females. Each male maintains a display court on the forest floor. The court is cleared of leaves and debris, creating an open patch beneath the vegetation where a performance can be seen and heard.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s 2019 account describes males cleaning these areas before displaying. That housekeeping is part of the courtship setting: the open ground gives a female a clear view of the male’s movements, while nearby saplings provide the launch points for the aerial portion of the routine.

Yellow throat feathers make the male conspicuous

At the edge of the court, the male puffs out his yellow throat feathers. The bright collar is a visual signal that identifies the displaying bird and places his plumage at the center of the female’s assessment. The throat display is not a separate trick from the flight sequence; it is one element of a staged performance that combines color, motion and sound.

The flight follows an arc between saplings

From his perch, the male flies back and forth between young trees in an arc. The path is short but rapid, and the bird returns repeatedly to the display area. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance describes males leaping between saplings as they perform, while the Audubon account emphasizes that speed is associated with mating opportunities in the reported study.

Wing beats create the snap

During the overhead portion of the routine, the male beats his wings together. The collision produces the characteristic snapping sound. The sound is therefore made by the bird’s own wing beats rather than by a call from the throat. Because the wing movement and the flight path happen together, a female can evaluate a combined visual-and-acoustic sequence rather than an isolated noise.

What a complete courtship sequence looks like

  1. Choose and clear a court. The male uses a patch of forest floor in the lek and removes leaves or other debris so the area is open.
  2. Take a position at the edge. He perches near the court, often on a sapling that serves as a launch point.
  3. Expose the yellow collar. The male puffs his yellow throat feathers before or during the active display.
  4. Cross the court in an arc. He flies between saplings, making repeated short movements across the display space.
  5. Snap the wings overhead. The wings beat together above the bird, producing the sharp snap described by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
  6. Repeat while a female watches. Courtship occurs in the lek, where a visiting female can observe more than one male and make a choice.

This sequence matters because the court is both a physical platform and an information display. Clearing the ground improves visibility; the yellow collar supplies a color signal; the flight path demonstrates movement; and the wing snap adds a precisely timed sound. The sources describe these parts together, not as independent behaviors.

Why the timing of the dance may matter

The 2011 National Audubon Society article reports that faster males obtained more mating opportunities in the study it summarized. It also says the researchers found evidence that females may distinguish very small differences in performance timing. The quoted conclusion from the study authors was: “Our results suggest that females visually discriminate differences in the male dance performance of tens to hundreds of milliseconds.”

A millisecond is one-thousandth of a second. A difference of tens to hundreds of milliseconds is therefore a fraction of a second—too brief for a human observer to judge reliably without slow-motion recording, but potentially visible to a bird watching the same maneuver repeatedly. In practical terms, the claim is that a female may be evaluating the precision and tempo of a sequence, not merely deciding whether a male is generally active.

“Faster” should not be read as a universal rule that the quickest male always wins. The evidence available here is a report of one study, as presented by Audubon in 2011. It does not establish a single winning speed for the species, prove that every female uses timing in exactly the same way, or show that speed is more important than plumage, court quality or other traits. It does indicate that courtship performance can carry information beyond the presence of a yellow throat.

The reported physical cost is unusually high

Daily courtship is described as an endurance task rather than a brief flourish. Audubon’s 2011 account reports the following figures from the study it covered:

Measure Reported figure How to interpret it
Peak heart rate during courtship About 1,300 beats per minute Audubon’s reported peak value for displaying males; it is not presented here as an independently checked species-wide average.
Body-mass change during daily courting About one-fifth of body mass over six to seven weeks Audubon’s description of the reported cost across a prolonged courting period, not a claim that every male loses exactly this amount.
Timing differences females may distinguish Tens to hundreds of milliseconds Audubon’s wording of the study authors’ conclusion about visual discrimination.

A heart rate near 1,300 beats per minute conveys how intense the repeated flights are, but it should not be confused with a resting rate or a normal value measured throughout the breeding season. Likewise, losing about one-fifth of body mass over six to seven weeks describes the cost reported for daily display in that account. It does not tell us how much food each male consumed, how quickly he recovered between performances, or whether males that fail to maintain condition stop displaying.

The combination of a costly routine and female attention creates a plausible form of sexual selection: males invest energy in a signal, and females choose among the signals they observe. The sources support that framing, but they do not establish that energetic depletion itself is what females detect. The reported female preference concerns performance, especially timing, while the body-mass and heart-rate numbers describe the price the male pays.

Females choose mates; males do not raise the young in this account

Audubon reports that females select mates using physical traits as well as the courtship display. After mating, the male leaves, and the mother raises the offspring alone. That division of roles is important when interpreting the dance: the routine is a mating signal, not a demonstration of future paternal behavior.

A fast or visually impressive performance should therefore not be described as evidence that a male will defend a nest, feed chicks or remain with a mate. The account provides no basis for attributing post-mating care to displaying males. The lek is a place for courtship and female choice, while offspring care is assigned to the female in the description.

Where observers encounter the display

A western Panama birding itinerary includes a trail visit to a golden-collared manakin lek. The itinerary gives December through August as an approximate mating season for that regional visit. That window is useful for planning within the itinerary’s setting, but it is not a universal calendar for every population or every year. Weather, local conditions and the timing of breeding can vary.

A lek visit is different from watching a solitary songbird. Several males may use nearby courts, and a female may appear briefly before leaving. The most useful observation is patient and unobtrusive: look for the cleared court, the yellow throat at the edge of the opening, the short flights between saplings and the sudden wing snap. Binoculars can help separate those fast movements without requiring an observer to approach the court, but they are an aid rather than a requirement for understanding the behavior.

What the evidence establishes—and what it does not

Two independent descriptions agree on the basic mechanics

The 2011 Audubon article and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s 2019 account both describe a lek-based performance involving a prepared area, yellow throat feathers, rapid movement between saplings and wing-produced snapping. Their agreement supports the basic outline of the dance.

The numerical claims remain secondary-source reports here

Audubon identifies researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles and says the study appeared in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The primary paper was not independently opened for this account, so the heart-rate, body-mass and fine-timing figures should remain attributed to Audubon’s report. They are not presented as newly measured values or as averages for the entire species.

Current conservation status is outside the evidence used here

These behavior accounts do not establish a current conservation-status label, population trend or threat assessment. A description of an energetic courtship routine cannot substitute for a contemporary population study. Readers seeking status information should consult a current conservation authority rather than infer it from the dance.

Why the performance is a useful example of animal courtship

The golden-collared manakin display brings several principles of courtship into one compact routine. A male modifies a location, making the court easier to inspect. He combines a conspicuous color patch with a repeatable movement pattern. He adds a sound generated by the movement itself. Finally, he performs in a lek where a female can compare individuals.

That arrangement helps explain why the routine can be both spectacular and exhausting. A signal has value only if a potential mate can perceive differences among performers. The Audubon report’s millisecond-scale claim suggests that, for these birds, the relevant differences may occur inside a sequence that looks instantaneous to people. The snap that a hiker hears as a single sound may be one part of a carefully timed performance whose details matter to the female watching it.

The safest conclusion is therefore precise: male golden-collared manakins court by preparing a forest-floor lek court, displaying yellow throat feathers, flying between saplings and snapping their wings overhead. A 2011 report says females favored faster performances and could distinguish timing differences of tens to hundreds of milliseconds, while the same report describes extreme energetic costs. Those findings make the dance a striking case of performance-based mate choice, but they should be read with the source’s date and attribution attached.
