The Gerard Butler disaster movie in the headline is Greenland (2020), Ric Roman Waugh’s survival thriller about a family trying to reach a government shelter as fragments of a planet-killing comet hit Earth. It climbed to No. 2 on FlixPatrol’s U.S. HBO Max movie chart on January 1 and 2, 2026, shortly before Greenland 2: Migration opened in theaters.
That original headline is now outdated: the sequel is no longer merely anticipated. Greenland 2: Migration opened in U.S. theaters on January 9, 2026, arrived digitally on January 27, and began streaming on HBO Max on May 8. Both movies are currently listed for U.S. streaming, although platform catalogs and international rights can change.

Which Gerard Butler movie is the headline referring to?
It is Greenland, a 2020 disaster thriller starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin. Butler plays John Garrity, a structural engineer whose already-strained family is forced into a desperate journey after scientists discover that the Clarke comet will cause global devastation.
John, his estranged wife Allison and their diabetic son Nathan are among the people selected for evacuation to a government-built shelter in Greenland. Reaching it becomes increasingly difficult as communication systems fail, cities are destroyed and frightened survivors turn on one another. The movie uses the comet as a large-scale threat, but its immediate subject is one family trying to stay together during the collapse of normal life.

Greenland is sometimes grouped with Butler’s louder disaster films, such as Geostorm, but its approach is more intimate. The movie spends less time presenting a succession of spectacular destruction scenes and more time on evacuation confusion, family conflict, moral choices and the behavior of ordinary people under extreme pressure.
Why did Greenland start trending again?
The clearest documented explanation is the release of the sequel. Viewers often return to an earlier film when a follow-up is being marketed, and Greenland was already available on HBO Max in the United States. The timing gave the 2020 movie a new reason to appear in viewers’ recommendations and watch lists.
According to FlixPatrol’s archived HBO Max chart, Greenland ranked No. 2 among U.S. HBO Max movies on January 1, 2026. It held the same position on January 2, behind One Battle After Another.
That is useful evidence of a streaming resurgence, but it needs to be described precisely. FlixPatrol is a third-party chart tracker. The ranking does not disclose how many people watched the film, how many hours they viewed, whether they finished it, whether it attracted new HBO Max subscribers or whether the sequel directly caused the climb. It is also a chart of HBO Max movies in the United States, not a ranking across every streaming service.

The May 17, 2026 FlixPatrol archive showed Greenland 2: Migration at No. 1 and the original at No. 2 on the U.S. HBO Max movie chart. That supports the description of the two films as a streaming draw at that particular point in time, not a claim about a permanent audience record.
Was Greenland really a smash hit?
Only with an important qualification. Calling it a conventional theatrical blockbuster would be misleading because the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted its U.S. release. The film began its international theatrical rollout in Belgium on July 31, 2020, and opened in France on August 7. Its planned U.S. theatrical release was later canceled.

Instead, the movie reached U.S. viewers through premium video on demand on December 18, 2020. A digital home-entertainment release followed, with Rotten Tomatoes listing January 26, 2021, as its U.S. streaming release date. The unusual distribution path meant that domestic theatrical box office could not measure the film in the same way it would have for a normal studio disaster movie.
Box Office Mojo lists approximately $52.3 million in worldwide theatrical revenue against a production budget reported at roughly $34 million to $35 million. The Numbers reports a lower worldwide total, illustrating why box-office figures should be attributed to a particular database rather than presented as perfectly settled.
The film’s pandemic-era commercial strategy also included a reported HBO licensing agreement valued at approximately $20 million to $30 million, according to Forbes. That figure should be treated as a reported trade estimate, not as proof of final profit. Production cost is only one part of a film’s finances; marketing, distribution fees, theatrical splits, licensing revenue, premium rentals and other contractual arrangements all affect the result.
The most accurate description is that Greenland was a pandemic-era home-entertainment success or a modestly budgeted disaster film that found a second life through PVOD, licensing and streaming. “Streaming darling” works when it refers to its chart popularity. “Smash-hit blockbuster” suggests a much stronger and more conventional box-office story than the available evidence supports.
What did critics like about the original?
At the time of checking for this article, Rotten Tomatoes listed Greenland at 78% from critics and 63% from audiences, based on 161 critic reviews. Scores can change as additional reviews and user ratings are added.
Reviews from The Guardian, Empire and RogerEbert.com generally highlighted the same qualities: grounded family stakes, an anxious atmosphere and a more restrained treatment of disaster than the genre often provides. Butler’s performance is comparatively controlled, while Baccarin gives Allison her own emotional and practical role rather than treating her only as a passenger in John’s story.

That focus helps explain why the film has continued to work on streaming. The central question is not simply whether humanity can stop the comet. It is whether one family can navigate bureaucratic selection, missing information, separation and social breakdown long enough to reach safety. The premise is large, but the suspense is often built from small obstacles and imperfect decisions.
What is Greenland 2: Migration about?
Greenland 2: Migration takes place five years after the comet strike. John and Allison Garrity and their son Nathan have survived in the Greenland shelter, but the bunker is no longer a secure long-term answer. The family must leave and travel across a devastated Europe in search of a new place to live.
Ric Roman Waugh returns as director. Chris Sparling, who wrote the original, co-wrote the sequel with Mitchell LaFortune. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin reprise their roles, while Roman Griffin Davis plays the older Nathan. Roger Dale Floyd played Nathan in the first film, so the sequel does not feature the same actor in the role.
The sequel has a runtime of 98 minutes and is rated PG-13. Its premise shifts the story from the immediate impact of a global catastrophe to the difficult aftermath: migration, ruined infrastructure and the challenge of finding a future after the event that defined the first film.

When was the sequel released?
- January 9, 2026: U.S. theatrical release.
- January 27, 2026: Digital release.
- May 8, 2026: HBO Max streaming debut, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max release listing.
That timeline matters when reading older stories about the original movie. Articles written before January 9 may accurately call Greenland 2: Migration an anticipated sequel, but that wording should not be carried into a current article published after its theatrical, digital and streaming releases.
How did Greenland 2: Migration perform?
The sequel has had a more mixed reception than its predecessor. At the time of checking, Rotten Tomatoes listed 48% from critics and 66% from audiences. Metacritic listed a score of 49, based on 19 critic reviews at the time of retrieval. The broad critical view is that Butler remains a dependable presence and the film contains effective action sequences, but it does not make the same impact as the original’s more contained family survival story.
Rank #4
Theatrically, the sequel did not match the first film’s broader home-entertainment reputation. Box Office Mojo lists approximately $17.77 million domestically, $27.42 million internationally and $45.19 million worldwide. The reported production budget was approximately $90 million, although that figure is an industry estimate rather than an audited public account. The Numbers reports different international and worldwide totals, so the database should always be named when quoting the result.
A weak theatrical comparison does not, by itself, establish that the sequel was definitively unprofitable. Streaming, digital rentals, international licensing and distribution arrangements can materially change a film’s financial outcome. The safer conclusion is that it was a theatrical underperformer relative to its reported budget, while its HBO Max arrival gave the franchise another burst of visibility.
Where can you watch both Greenland movies?
For viewers in the United States, the latest public listings checked for this article show both films available through HBO Max. JustWatch lists Greenland and lists Greenland 2: Migration through HBO Max, the HBO Max Amazon Channel and YouTube TV.

Streaming rights are time-sensitive. A title can leave a service, move between subscription tiers or appear through a different channel without warning. Availability in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and other territories may be different from the U.S. listings, so international viewers should check their local catalog rather than assume that HBO Max availability carries over worldwide. Digital rental and purchase options may also vary by retailer and territory.
Should you watch the original first?
Yes. The best order is:
- Watch Greenland (2020).
- Watch Greenland 2: Migration as a continuation of the Garrity family’s story.
The sequel is built around the consequences of the first film and the family’s survival in the Greenland shelter. Watching the original first gives the second movie more emotional context and makes the five-year time jump easier to follow. Viewers looking mainly for a self-contained disaster spectacle can start with the sequel, but it is not the strongest way to experience the story.
For those deciding whether to spend extra on a digital rental, the original is the safer recommendation: it has the stronger critical profile, a clearer family-centered premise and the more distinctive approach to the disaster genre. The sequel may still appeal to viewers who want to see what happens after the initial catastrophe, particularly now that both films are available in the same U.S. streaming environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gerard Butler’s streaming disaster movie called?
The movie is Greenland (2020), directed by Ric Roman Waugh and starring Gerard Butler as John Garrity and Morena Baccarin as Allison Garrity.
Is Greenland 2: Migration already available?
Yes. The sequel opened in U.S. theaters on January 9, 2026, was released digitally on January 27, and began streaming on HBO Max on May 8, 2026. U.S. availability should be confirmed because streaming catalogs change.
Was Greenland a conventional box-office smash?
Not in the usual theatrical sense. Its planned U.S. theatrical release was canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic, so its commercial performance depended heavily on premium video on demand, licensing and streaming. It is more accurate to call it a pandemic-era home-entertainment success or streaming breakout.
Do I need to watch Greenland before Greenland 2: Migration?
Watching the original first is recommended. The sequel takes place five years later and follows the Garrity family as they leave their Greenland shelter to search for a new home across devastated Europe.

Greenland is the Gerard Butler disaster film behind the streaming headline. Its No. 2 HBO Max chart position in early January 2026 documents a real resurgence, but not a disclosed audience total or proof of profitability. The sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, has now been released and is also streaming in the United States, making this a good time to watch the original first and then decide whether its more mixed follow-up is worth continuing.
