Her recollection, reported in May 2024, describes the moments before he was fatally shot in downtown Los Angeles—not a police or court account of the encounter.
What Scarlett Wactor said happened
In a May 29, 2024 interview with Us Weekly, Scarlett Wactor said her son and a coworker found people at his car after he finished work. She recalled that one person looked up wearing a mask, and Johnny recognized that the situation was not what he had first thought. As she put it, “When the person looked up he had on a mask, like a bandana,” according to Us Weekly.

Scarlett said Johnny moved in front of his coworker. Good Morning America’s May 28, 2024 report likewise described her account that he approached the car believing it was being towed, then stepped in front of the coworker. Scarlett told Us Weekly she later spoke with that coworker. These are details of her account as reported by the publications, not a verbatim police narrative.
What is established about the shooting
The Associated Press reported on May 27, 2024, that Wactor was shot in downtown Los Angeles in the early hours of May 25, after leaving his bartending shift. He was 37. Us Weekly reported that a coroner’s report identified a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled his death a homicide.

Contemporary reporting described the encounter as involving an attempted catalytic-converter theft. That context does not change the distinction between Scarlett’s recollection and the official description of the crime.
Remembering Johnny Wactor
Wactor played Brando Corbin on General Hospital from 2020 to 2022, the Associated Press reported. He was not killed on the television series; the fatal shooting happened after work in Los Angeles.

In a January 15, 2025 report, the Associated Press said Leonel Gutierrez received a four-year state-prison sentence after no contest pleas to grand theft and attempted robbery. Frank Olano received five years and eight months after no contest pleas to being an accessory after the fact and receiving stolen property. AP reported that neither man had been charged with killing Wactor.
That AP report said Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada were charged with murder and had pleaded not guilty at that time. The report is a dated account of the case, not confirmation of its status today.
