John York returned to filming General Hospital in May 2024 after taking time away for treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and smoldering multiple myeloma. His character, Mac Scorpio, was scheduled to return to viewers on June 19, 2024. Those dates distinguish York’s return to set from Mac’s return on screen; reports from 2024 do not establish York’s health status today.
When did John York return to General Hospital?
York was back at work on the ABC daytime drama in May 2024, according to Soap Opera Digest. Mac Scorpio’s on-screen return was scheduled for June 19, 2024, a date also reported by TV Insider. A May 10 teaser captioned “Mac is back!” promoted the character’s return; it was not the episode date. Soap Opera Digest reported the teaser.
Why was York away from the show?
York disclosed that he had been diagnosed in late 2022 with MDS and smoldering multiple myeloma, conditions that affect blood and bone marrow. In an account published June 17, 2024, ABC News reported that York described undergoing chemotherapy, seeking a compatible donor, and receiving a transplant after a match was found through NMDP, formerly known as the National Marrow Donor Program and Be the Match. This is an account of York’s experience, not medical guidance or a description of what another patient should expect.
What did York say about returning?
York expressed gratitude for the support he received from colleagues and viewers. “Everybody has been very welcoming, very supportive … I can’t tell you how nice it’s been, the support that I’ve gotten,” he told ABC News’ Zohreen Shah about returning as Mac Scorpio.

The cited coverage documents York’s treatment and return to filming in 2024. It does not verify his health status as of October 2026, so a return to work should not be treated as evidence of a particular current diagnosis, remission, or prognosis.
