Cipher is not the true villain behind Gen V season 2’s final plot: Thomas Godolkin has been manipulating events through Doug. Godolkin is stopped in the finale, while Marie and her friends are recruited into an underground resistance. The Boys season 5 later gives that setup a supporting payoff—not a role in the final fight against Homelander.
Who is the real villain in the Gen V season 2 finale?
The finale redirects the apparent threat from Cipher to Thomas Godolkin. The identities matter: Cipher is the apparent persona, Doug is the person Godolkin has been puppeting, and Godolkin is the force orchestrating the scheme. TheWrap’s October 22, 2025 interview and TechRadar’s finale recap describe the reveal and its consequences.
Godolkin possesses Marie and tries to make her kill her friends. Polarity breaks his control, and Marie kills Godolkin. Earlier in the episode, Black Noir kills Doug. The finale therefore resolves Godolkin’s immediate threat rather than leaving him as the antagonist for The Boys season 5.
How does the finale set up The Boys season 5?
Marie’s group is drawn into the resistance
After the battle, Starlight and A-Train arrive and invite Marie and her friends to join the resistance. Kripke described the moment as “the birth of resistance” and “an underground that is fighting back against Homelander’s America,” in his interview with TheWrap. The handoff shifts the story from Godolkin’s scheme to the broader political conflict under Homelander’s government.

The timeline bridges the two series
Kripke said, “The Boys Season 5 picks up about six months after ‘Gen V’ Season 2 ends.” That makes the invitation a bridge into the next chapter, rather than a separate ending with no connection to The Boys.
What happened to the setup in The Boys season 5?
The Boys season 5 is now complete: Amazon said its series finale became available on May 20, 2026, and Prime Video lists eight episodes, with episode eight titled “Blood and Bone.” Amazon’s announcement and the Prime Video season listing provide the official season and finale details.

The aired ending turns the resistance into the political frame for the final season, but Marie’s group does not decide the confrontation with Homelander. Marie, Emma, and Jordan survive. They are directed to help smuggle people to Canada, and they do not take part in the final fight. TVLine’s series-finale recap reports their fates and assignment.

| Starlight and A-Train invite Marie and her friends into an underground resistance, which Kripke called the “birth of resistance.” | Resistance against Homelander’s government provides the political frame, while Marie, Emma, and Jordan are tasked with helping people escape to Canada. |
| Kripke said season 5 begins about six months after Gen V season 2. | The season 5 finale aired May 20, 2026, according to Amazon; Prime Video lists it as episode eight, “Blood and Bone.” |

What the reveal does—and does not—mean
Godolkin’s defeat closes the immediate villain story in Gen V, while the resistance invitation gives Marie’s group a place in the wider conflict. The season 5 ending confirms that their contribution is consequential but indirect: they survive and take on an escape-assistance mission rather than appearing as combatants in Homelander’s final confrontation.

One alternative raised during production—a possibility that Godolkin might hide in Cate’s head—was a discarded pitch, not what the finale depicts, according to TheWrap’s interview. It should not be treated as an unresolved twist or a confirmed route for his return.
