Spoilers for Gen V season 2, episode 8 and The Boys season 5 finale. Gen V’s “The Guardians of Godolkin” gives its own story a decisive ending: Marie kills Thomas Godolkin, then Starlight and A-Train invite her friends to join the resistance. That finale made the case that Homelander’s regime could be challenged. In hindsight, its title’s prediction was right—but Homelander’s death happens later, in The Boys’ 2026 series finale, not in Gen V.
How Gen V season 2 ends
The finale opens a door into Godolkin’s past, revisiting 1967 to reveal that V1, a variant of Compound V, prevented his body from aging. In the present, Doug explains the other half of Godolkin’s survival: he has used other bodies, and an earlier attempt to possess Marie failed because of her strength.
The threat becomes immediate when Godolkin takes control of Marie and tries to turn her against her friends. Polarity breaks his hold, giving Marie the chance to kill him. Earlier, Black Noir kills Doug and captures Polarity, so the climax comes at a cost rather than as a clean rescue.
Godolkin’s end feels necessary to the story the episode has told. Gen V showrunner Michele Fazekas put it plainly in TheWrap’s finale interview: “I feel like he had to die. Godolkin had to go.” The line fits the episode’s payoff: Marie is no longer simply surviving the school’s systems or Godolkin’s designs; she is the one who ends his immediate threat.

What the finale resolves—and what it leaves open
Marie’s choice to kill Godolkin settles the central conflict of the season, but the character endings are deliberately uneven. She forgives Cate and finds common ground with Annabeth. Emma’s relationship with Greg moves forward. Jordan, meanwhile, ends their relationship with Marie. These personal turns resist the tidy idea that defeating a villain repairs every relationship around him.
The final scene widens the stakes. Starlight and A-Train arrive to recruit Marie and her friends into the resistance against Homelander. It is an exciting expansion of the Gen V cast’s place in the larger story, but it does not secure the students’ safety or resolve the political crisis. The ending is both a victory and a recruitment pitch for the next fight.

How Gen V sets up The Boys season 5
The handoff is unusually direct: the young supes are no longer just caught in Godolkin University’s schemes; they are being asked to join an organized fight against Homelander’s government. Eric Kripke, The Boys executive producer and showrunner, described the direction to TheWrap as “there’s this birth of resistance. That there’s this underground that is fighting back against Homelander’s America. This kind of fascist government.”
Kripke also said The Boys season 5 “picks up about six months after ‘Gen V’ Season 2 ends.” That timing makes the recruitment more than a thematic nod: Gen V’s finale plants a group of potential allies shortly before the next series begins. The episode still belongs to Marie and her friends, but its final minutes deliberately point beyond their campus story.

Did Homelander die in The Boys season 5?
Yes. The title’s prediction was confirmed later, in The Boys’ 2026 series finale. The Boys remove Homelander’s powers, and Butcher kills him in the Oval Office. TVLine’s recap describes the killing; in a separate TV Insider interview, Kripke said he wanted the confrontation to stay intimate and focused on the characters rather than become a large spectacle.
That is hindsight, not an event shown or confirmed in Gen V episode 8. The Gen V finale establishes the resistance and makes a coming confrontation feel possible; The Boys season 5 supplies the eventual outcome. Keeping those moments distinct matters: the episode’s achievement is setting the fuse, not revealing how the later series finale ends.

Verdict: a satisfying Gen V ending with a purposeful handoff
“The Guardians of Godolkin” earns its crossover hook because it first gives Marie a consequential resolution to her own season. Godolkin is stopped through the combined force of her strength and Polarity’s intervention, while the friends’ fractured relationships remain complicated. That is stronger closure than simply ending on a teaser.
The recruitment scene nevertheless shifts the final emphasis toward The Boys. Viewers looking for a complete resolution to the political threat will not find one here; viewers following both shows get a clear bridge to the resistance story that follows. With later hindsight, the prediction in the title proved correct, but the episode’s best function is not prophecy—it is turning a group of survivors into possible participants in the fight.
