Dream Productions is set between Inside Out and Inside Out 2, inside the studio in Riley’s mind where dreams are made. Paula Pell voices Paula Persimmon, the ambitious director at the center of the studio’s story, while Richard Ayoade voices Xeni, a daydream director hoping to move into night-dream production. The series also brings back Riley and the five familiar Emotions.
What is Dream Productions about?
Pixar’s four-episode series takes place between the two Inside Out films. Its story shifts from Headquarters to Dream Productions, the studio inside Riley’s mind where dreams are made. The central conflict follows Paula Persimmon and Xeni as they try to create a successful dream for a growing Riley. Disney’s media kit says the series began streaming exclusively on Disney+ on December 11, 2024; availability can vary by region.
The show uses a mockumentary style, with handheld cinematography, fourth-wall breaks and candid testimonials. Producer Jaclyn Simon described the idea behind it: “We’re fascinated by the universality of dreams—the way everyone experiences them, how strange and surreal they can be. Yet we’re often left wondering, ‘Where do they come from? Who creates them, and who guides us through them in our waking lives?’”
Who voices the Dream Productions staff?
The new studio characters give the series its workplace-comedy story. The guide below distinguishes their jobs and ambitions rather than treating them as additional Emotions in Riley’s Headquarters.

How the mockumentary style shapes the characters
The handheld camera, interviews and direct-to-camera moments make the studio feel like a workplace documentary, not just a backstage setting for dream sequences. Director Valerie LaPoint said, “I find it particularly funny doing it with characters we’re already familiar with because we’ve never seen them talk directly to the camera before—there’s something really exciting about that,”
What the official cast list does—and does not—identify
Pixar’s official series page lists the principal voice cast: Paula Pell, Richard Ayoade, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ally Maki, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black and Phyllis Smith. D23 provides the character mappings in the tables above. These official pages do not map every performer to every minor or incidental role, so the list should not be read as a complete credits breakdown. For example, D23 mentions Paula’s dog Mel in its production discussion but does not name a voice actor for Mel.
