T.R. Knight left Grey’s Anatomy after season five, amid reduced screen time and what he described as a breakdown in communication with creator Shonda Rhimes. George O’Malley’s death in the season-six premiere made Knight’s departure permanent on screen. The available public accounts explain Knight’s reasons for leaving more fully than they explain why the writers chose that particular death.
Why did T.R. Knight leave Grey’s Anatomy?
ABC confirmed on June 19, 2009, that Knight would not return for season six. A contemporaneous 6abc report said George’s role had diminished during the preceding season and that Knight had asked to be released from his contract, with three years remaining.
In coverage of an Entertainment Weekly interview, Knight described a “breakdown of communication” with Rhimes. He said he could not trust the answers he was receiving about George’s story and objected to how little the character had been appearing. Those are Knight’s reported reasons, not an official ABC explanation. The Los Angeles Times report also covered the departure and Rhimes’s response.
Knight’s public departure statement called leaving difficult, thanked the cast and crew, and expressed gratitude for the chance to play George. Rhimes wished him well and praised him as “an incredibly talented actor and a person whose strength of character is admired by all of us.”

How did George O’Malley die?
In the season-five finale, George is fatally injured after pushing a pedestrian out of the path of an oncoming bus. He is taken to the hospital so badly injured that his colleagues do not recognize him. The season-six premiere reveals his identity when he signs “007” in Meredith’s hand, then confirms that he dies. The ABC News recap recounts the reveal.
The accident provides a definitive in-story exit for a departing cast member: George dies after saving a stranger. But the public accounts cited here do not give a complete, attributable explanation of the writers’ private reasoning for choosing a bus accident rather than another way to end the character’s story.

Was George’s death caused by the Isaiah Washington controversy?
The controversy involving Isaiah Washington’s anti-gay slur and Knight’s coming out is relevant background to the difficult period surrounding Knight’s departure. Contemporary reporting connects those events to the context, but it does not establish that the controversy alone caused Knight to leave or that it dictated George’s specific fate. The Los Angeles Times coverage discusses Knight’s account; it should not be treated as proof of a sole-cause explanation.
It is therefore important to keep two questions separate: Knight’s reported reasons for leaving involved reduced screen time and strained communication about George’s story; George’s death was the plot device that concluded the character’s role. Claims that Rhimes killed George in retaliation, or that the Washington controversy by itself explains the death, go beyond what these public reports establish.
