Gary Wright, the singer-songwriter behind “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” died at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, on September 4, 2023. He was 80. Reports said Wright had Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia; they did not establish a formal cause of death. The Los Angeles Times and The Guardian reported his death and career.
Who was Gary Wright?
Born in New Jersey in 1943, Wright first became known as a member and joint lead vocalist of Spooky Tooth, the British blues-rock group. He later built a solo career around keyboard-driven songs, most notably the 1975 album The Dream Weaver. The Guardian’s obituary traces that path from the band to his solo breakthrough.

How “Dream Weaver” became his signature song
Wright wrote “Dream Weaver” on guitar, then shaped the recording around electronic sounds. The Guardian described it as one of the first tracks recorded almost entirely with synthesizers, with Jim Keltner on drums. Wright called it “a progressive single rather than just a simple commercial hit” and said its treatment made it “a different type of single.”
Released on The Dream Weaver in 1975, the song reached No. 2 on the US chart in 1976. The album reached No. 7 on the US album chart, and “Love Is Alive,” another hit from the record, also peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to The Guardian. These are chart positions, not sales or certification figures.

George Harrison, friendship and spiritual influence
Alongside his solo work, Wright played keyboards on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and worked with Harrison frequently. The two became friends; Wright later described Harrison as his “spiritual mentor.” In 2014, Wright published Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, and My Friendship with George Harrison, a memoir that reflected that musical and personal connection.
The songs’ later life in film and television
“Dream Weaver” found new listeners through screen appearances after its original chart run. Wright recorded a new version for Wayne’s World (1992). The song also appeared in The People vs. Larry Flynt, Toy Story 3, Ice Age: Collision Course and Glee, extending its reach across films and television.
