Gavin Creel, the Tony Award-winning Broadway actor and singer, died at his home in Manhattan on September 30, 2024, at age 48. His publicist, Matt Polk, told the Associated Press that Creel had been diagnosed in July with metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma. The Broadway League also confirmed his age and date of death.
Why Gavin Creel was known
Creel won the 2017 Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical for playing Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, opposite Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. The win recognized a career that ranged well beyond that production: the Broadway League counted 11 Broadway and Touring Broadway productions among his credits.
His Broadway debut came as Jimmy Smith in Thoroughly Modern Millie, a role that earned him his first Tony nomination. His later stage credits included La Cage aux Folles, Hair, The Book of Mormon, She Loves Me, Waitress and Into the Woods.
Stage work in London and beyond
Creel played Elder Price in the London production of The Book of Mormon and won the 2014 Olivier Award for the role. His work also included screen appearances: he played Bill in Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, and appeared in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories. A 2022 solo concert was filmed for the premiere episode of PBS’s Stars Onstage at Westport Country Playhouse, the Associated Press reported.

Activism and Broadway community work
Creel co-founded Broadway Impact with Rory O’Malley and Jenny Kanelos, an organization focused on building support for marriage equality. The Associated Press reported that he worked to pass the federal Marriage Equality Act. The Broadway League also noted his involvement with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
In its October 4, 2024 statement, the Broadway League said one theater from each Broadway theater owner would dim its lights in Creel’s memory. The statement recorded the plan at that time; it does not by itself establish whether or how the tribute was later carried out.
