Freely is worth considering if you want mainstream UK live television without an aerial or a monthly TV package. It is not a complete replacement for Sky or Virgin Media TV: it needs broadband, does not offer conventional recording, and does not include premium sports, films or subscription services.
Verdict
Freely is best understood as a broadband-delivered alternative to Freeview, with a more unified TV-style interface for live channels, catch-up and on-demand programmes. There is no recurring Freely subscription fee, but you still need compatible hardware, broadband and a TV Licence when legally required.
Buy into Freely if your priority is free UK television in a room without an aerial, or if you are cancelling pay TV but still want BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and other mainstream channels in one place. Do not rely on it alone if you need a DVR, premium sports, guaranteed viewing during broadband outages or a large paid-TV bundle.

Freely is backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 through Everyone TV. Its official overview is available at Freely.co.uk.

What is Freely?
Freely delivers UK television over your home broadband connection rather than through an aerial or satellite dish. It combines live television with broadcaster catch-up and on-demand content, aiming to feel more like a conventional channel platform than a collection of separate apps.
That makes it different from:
- Freeview: Primarily terrestrial television delivered through an aerial. Freeview Play adds on-demand services on compatible equipment.
- Freesat: Free-to-air television delivered through a satellite dish.
- Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video: Subscription streaming services. They may be available on the same TV or device, but their programmes are not included with Freely.
Freely is therefore not “free Netflix”. Its main benefit is bringing free-to-air live television and broadcaster content together without requiring an aerial.
What does “free” really mean?
There is no monthly Freely platform charge. However, the total cost of using it can include:
- A Freely-compatible television or streaming box.
- Your existing broadband service and the data it uses.
- A TV Licence when watching or recording live television or using BBC iPlayer, subject to the legal rules and exemptions.
- Optional subscriptions such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or NOW.
Freely’s equipment guidance sets out its broadband and licensing requirements at Freely’s help centre. The platform removes a recurring TV-platform fee; it does not remove every cost associated with watching television.
Nor is it an ad-free service. Commercial channels can contain advertising, while broadcasters may show trailers and promotions. Some compatible devices may also offer additional free streaming channels with their own advertising arrangements.
Which channels and programmes do you get?
The service includes major public-service broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, along with other live channels and regional variants. The precise lineup changes, and postcode settings may determine which BBC and ITV regional services you receive.
Check the official Freely channel list before buying. Do not assume that every channel shown in a wider platform guide is available to a broadband-only device: some services may depend on an aerial, a region or a particular product.
Freely supports live viewing, catch-up and on-demand playback. Restart functionality can let you begin a programme already in progress, but it is not universal. Availability depends on the broadcaster, programme and device, and rights windows mean that catch-up programmes can later disappear.

Does Freely need an aerial?
No. Freely’s streamed channels use home broadband, so you do not need an aerial, satellite dish or additional aerial cabling. This is particularly useful for:
- Homes with poor terrestrial reception.
- Rooms without an aerial socket.
- Renters who do not want installation work.
- Older televisions that can be upgraded through HDMI.
An aerial is still useful if you want traditional Freeview live television or an aerial-connected recorder. “No aerial” means internet-dependent television, not equipment-free television.
Broadband requirements
Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live and on-demand viewing. That is a service recommendation, not a guarantee that every household will receive uninterrupted playback.

If Wi-Fi is unreliable, use Ethernet where the device supports it. A broadband-only household should also consider what happens when the internet service fails: Freely live television will be unavailable or disrupted.
If you are cancelling pay TV but keeping broadband, compare the full annual broadband cost separately. Freely does not make broadband free; it uses the connection you already have.
Can you add Freely to an existing TV?
Yes, provided the television has an HDMI input and you use a compatible Freely streaming device. The practical setup is:
- Confirm built-in Freely support, or choose a certified HDMI streaming device.
- Connect the TV and device to mains power.
- Connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet where available.
- Enter your postcode so regional services can be selected.
- Sign in to any optional streaming apps separately.
- Test live TV, restart, catch-up and the apps your household actually uses.
Compatibility is model-specific. Not every Samsung, LG, Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV or Roku product can simply download Freely. Check the exact television or device before purchase. The official buying page is the safest starting point.
Current hardware options
Manhattan Aero
The Manhattan Aero is a Freely-compatible streaming box for an existing HDMI television. It uses TiVo OS, supports Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet, includes a voice remote, and can output up to 4K for supported apps. Manhattan’s Freely product page showed a £69 price signal during the research period; treat that as indicative rather than a permanent price.

The Aero also supports apps including Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and YouTube, but you need the relevant subscriptions where applicable. It is a sensible choice for an older or secondary TV, provided you do not need recording. Product details are at Manhattan’s Aero page.
Netgem PLEIO
Netgem’s PLEIO is a broader proposition built around a Freely streaming puck, voice remote, wireless gamepad, additional channels and cloud gaming. Launch material listed £99 including three months of PLEIO Extra, while later promotional material described other £99 arrangements. These terms can change, so check the current offer before buying.
PLEIO may suit a household that wants games and extra content. It is unnecessary complexity if you only want Freely’s free live channels.

Freeview Play already offers live and on-demand viewing in one environment on supported devices. Its published on-demand guidance cites a lower 2 Mbps minimum, but Freeview live television is primarily aerial-delivered, so the two services are not direct technical equivalents. The biggest limitation: no recording
Freely does not provide conventional DVR recording. Manhattan says streamed Freely content cannot be recorded and that Everyone TV has confirmed recording will not be supported on Freely. This means no normal series links, permanent recording library or guaranteed ability to skip adverts later.
Pause is not the same as recording. Manhattan’s Aero documentation says live television can be paused for up to 15 minutes, after which you can resume or return to live viewing. Restart and catch-up also depend on broadcaster rights.
If recording is central to your viewing, choose Freeview Play with a recorder or Freesat with a recorder instead. A mixed setup can also work: Freely for streamed live channels and catch-up, with an aerial or satellite recorder for programmes you want to keep.
Is Freely a replacement for Sky or Virgin Media TV?
Only for the basic free-TV component. Freely can replace the mainstream live channels and some catch-up viewing that many households use through a pay-TV box. It cannot replace Sky Sports, TNT Sports, premium films, Sky Atlantic or a comprehensive paid entertainment bundle.

A realistic cancellation setup might combine Freely with BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5 content, then add only the services you actually watch. Sports fans may still need separate sports subscriptions, and film or entertainment viewers may still want Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or NOW.
Compare the complete annual cost—not just the absence of a Freely fee—including hardware, broadband, TV Licence and optional subscriptions. A pay-TV package may also bundle broadband, equipment, support and billing, so cancelling it can change more than the television service.
4K and picture quality
A 4K box does not mean Freely live channels are broadcast in 4K. Manhattan states that the Aero supports 4K output and 4K playback in some third-party apps, while Freely live channels are not currently 4K.

Buy a 4K device for compatible Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or YouTube content—not because you expect Freely’s live channels to be 4K. Actual quality also depends on the programme, app, subscription and connection.
Who should choose Freely?
- Households without an aerial: It provides a practical route to free live UK television.
- Viewers with poor reception: Broadband delivery may avoid terrestrial reception problems.
- People cancelling pay TV: It preserves a familiar guide and mainstream channels without a monthly TV-platform fee.
- Owners of older HDMI TVs: A compatible box can be cheaper than replacing a working television.
- Viewers who rarely record: Catch-up and restart may cover occasional time-shifting.
Who should avoid relying on it alone?
- Heavy DVR users who record series or keep programmes.
- Sports fans who require Sky Sports or TNT Sports.
- Households with slow, capped or unreliable broadband.
- Viewers who want broadband-independent live television.
- Anyone assuming a Freely device includes Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or other paid subscriptions.
- Buyers choosing a device mainly for 4K Freely live broadcasts.
Common setup problems
No channels appear
Check the internet connection, exact device compatibility, postcode and region settings, firmware, and whether the missing service requires an aerial. A broadband-only device may not receive every channel shown in a wider guide.
The picture buffers
Test speed at the television, not only beside the router. Improve Wi-Fi placement, reduce simultaneous streams, check for ISP congestion or data limits, and use Ethernet if supported.
A favourite channel is missing
Consult the official channel list. The service may be regional, aerial-only, streaming-only, newly added, withdrawn or available through a separate broadcaster app.
The viewer expects a recording menu
This is not a fault. Freely streaming does not support conventional recording. Use Freeview or Freesat recording hardware if that feature matters.
Final recommendation
Freely is a strong free-TV delivery system, not a universal pay-TV replacement. It makes the most sense for UK households with reliable broadband, no usable aerial and a desire for mainstream live television in one guide. It is particularly good value when you already own a compatible TV or can add an inexpensive HDMI box.
Keep Freeview or Freesat in the shortlist if you need recording or resilience during broadband failures. Keep Sky, Virgin Media or selective streaming subscriptions if premium sports, films or bundled services are essential. For many households, the best answer is Freely plus only the subscriptions they genuinely use—not Freely alone and not an expensive package by default.
