Roku offers plenty to watch without a monthly streaming subscription, but there is no single permanent list of free channels. “Free Roku channels” can mean The Roku Channel’s ad-supported streams, free apps in the Roku Streaming Store, or broadcast stations received with an antenna. The lineup varies by country, device, and licensing, so use this guide to find the main options and check what is available to you.
What counts as a free Roku channel?
Roku is a streaming platform, not a single TV package. Its devices provide access to apps and services that may be free, paid, or a mix of both. Here, “free” means you can watch without a paid monthly subscription; advertising is common, and some services require a free account, library card, or antenna. A free trial is not a lasting free service.
- Free with ads: No subscription, but commercials are shown.
- Free app, mixed catalog: The app costs nothing to install, but some titles may require payment or a subscription.
- Free with registration or a library card: Access depends on an account or a participating library.
- Free over the air: Requires a suitable antenna and broadcast reception; it is not a Roku streaming app.
Roku’s catalog is regional. Its documentation on the Channel Store explains that app availability differs by country because of copyright and distribution agreements. The examples below are principally relevant to U.S. viewers; check your own Roku Store for current availability.
The Roku Channel: Roku’s main free destination
The Roku Channel combines free, ad-supported movies and shows with live streaming channels, news, kids’ programming, and Roku Originals. Roku advertises more than 500 free live TV streaming channels in the U.S. as of 2026. That is a changing count of scheduled streams—not 500 traditional cable networks or a promise that every channel or program will remain available.

Live channels are linear: you tune in to whatever is scheduled rather than choosing any episode on demand. The separate on-demand library is better for selecting a particular available movie or series. Roku says its Originals can be watched free on The Roku Channel without a subscription; the broader catalog is ad-supported and changes over time. The service also offers optional premium subscriptions, rentals, and purchases, so not everything surfaced in the app is free.
Open The Roku Channel and select its live-TV or guide area to browse streams. On supported Roku TVs, the Live TV entry on the Home screen can also lead to the guide. Exact labels and features may vary by model and software version.
Major free Roku apps and sources by category
These are useful starting points, not an exhaustive or permanent roster. A service may be free to install but still offer paid content; check its Roku listing and the access prompt before counting a particular title as free.

Free live TV and news
Start with The Roku Channel’s live guide, which includes categories such as news, weather, entertainment, food and home, sports, and kids’ programming. Other services—including Pluto TV, Xumo Play, Plex, and some broadcaster apps—may offer scheduled streams. Their channel lists change, so check each app’s current description in the Store rather than relying on an old channel count.
For local news, look for apps from stations serving your area and check whether they provide live video or only clips and on-demand reports. YouTube streams can also be useful, but a free news stream is not necessarily a local broadcast affiliate or a substitute for every cable news network.
Movies and on-demand TV
The Roku Channel and services such as Fawesome are places to browse free, ad-supported movies and series. YouTube offers a broad range of creator and educational video, while hoopla can add library-provided films and programs. On-demand apps let you choose from their available catalogs; live channels are better when you want to browse whatever is on now. Titles can rotate in and out, and an app may mix free selections with rentals or subscriptions.

Sports
Free Roku apps can offer sports news, highlights, niche channels, older events, and occasional live programming. Roku includes sports among its live-TV categories, but that does not make every game or league free. Rights to major live events are often paid, restricted by location, or available only through a provider login. Verify the exact event and its access terms. A third-party app listing that advertises many “live sports channels” is not an official Roku sports package or proof that it carries authorized live games.
Kids, education, and international programming
The Roku Channel includes kids’ programming, and YouTube and library services may provide additional family or educational content. Free does not mean ad-free or fully curated: check app-level settings and Roku account or device controls before handing over the remote.
For library content, hoopla is useful only if your library participates; ask the library which streaming services and borrowing limits it supports. For language-specific programming, Amasian TV is one example of an Asian-focused service. Spanish-language, European, and other international choices depend on the country and local Roku Store. Check the app listing and the actual free-access terms in your region.

Free local broadcast channels with an antenna
A Roku TV has a TV tuner and can receive local over-the-air broadcasts with an HDTV antenna. A Roku streaming stick or player does not receive antenna signals on its own; it needs a TV with a tuner and antenna input if you want broadcast channels. Antenna stations are independent broadcasts, not Roku channels.
- Connect an HDTV antenna to the antenna input on your Roku TV.
- Open the TV’s Live TV input and run a channel scan.
- After the scan, open the Live TV Channel Guide and select a station.
- On supported Roku TVs, browse the guide to move between antenna channels and free streaming channels.
Reception depends on your location, distance from transmitters, terrain, building materials, and antenna placement. A station’s app may offer different content from its over-the-air broadcast, and local streaming availability varies by market. How to find and install free Roku apps
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Select Streaming Store.
- Browse Top Free & TV, or use search to find a specific app.
- Choose the app and select Add app.
- Open it and check whether the title or stream you want requires an account, provider login, payment, or subscription.
Labels can differ by device, software version, or region. If you do not see Streaming Store, use Roku Search or visit the Roku Streaming Store website. Roku’s free movies and TV support page describes the free-content areas and finding apps. A “Free” or “Featured Free” recommendation may open another app, so you may need to install it separately.

How to tell whether a channel or title is really free
- Look for a clear free or included-with-free-tier label.
- Check whether the app asks for a cable or live-TV provider login.
- Distinguish a free account from a paid subscription or trial.
- Watch for rental, purchase, or premium add-on prompts, particularly inside The Roku Channel and network apps.
- For library apps, confirm that your library participates and check its borrowing limits.
- For sports, verify the specific event—not just the app’s claim to offer sports.
Installing an app, creating a Roku account, starting a free trial, adding a premium subscription, and renting a movie are different actions. Read the on-screen terms before confirming anything. Most free streaming services are ad-supported, and ad load and personalization differ by service.
Free Roku setups for different viewers
- Movies and classic TV: Start with The Roku Channel and add Fawesome if its catalog suits you.
- Local news: Combine local station apps and The Roku Channel; consider an antenna if you have a Roku TV and adequate reception.
- Library users: Add hoopla if your library participates, alongside The Roku Channel.
- International or language-specific viewing: Search your regional Store for services such as Amasian TV and verify which content is free.
- Sports fans: Use free apps for news, highlights, and selected events, but check whether the game you want requires a paid service.
Keeping your list current
For the most accurate lineup, check the live guide and app listings on your own Roku device, then confirm access requirements in the provider’s description. Store availability, local stations, schedules, and licensed catalogs can change. Roku’s 500-plus live-channel figure is a current promotional count, not a fixed roster or guarantee of specific programs. The list here is a guide to major sources, not a complete inventory of every regional or niche app.
If free choices do not include a particular premium network, current episode, or live sporting event, that content may require a provider login or paid service. A Roku device gives access to free and paid apps; buying one does not make paid programming free.
