Four Prominent Red-Light and Nightlife Districts Around the World

De Wallen, the Reeperbahn, Kabukicho, and Patpong are notable but distinct places. Here is what current sources establish about each—and why this is not a top-five ranking.

There is no sound basis here for ranking five current red-light districts worldwide. Four recognizable examples—Amsterdam’s De Wallen, Hamburg’s Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, Tokyo’s Kabukicho, and Bangkok’s Patpong—can be discussed, but they differ in character and in how well their current details are documented. Some are known for sex-work venues; others are broader nightlife districts.

How to read this list

These are four notable examples, not an objective top four or a substitute for a global ranking. The available sources do not establish a defensible fifth current district with comparable evidence. The comparison below distinguishes each place’s known character and the limits of the available information; it does not imply that local laws or visitor experiences are equivalent.

District Current character supported by sources Visitor context
De Wallen, Amsterdam Associated with window brothels and sex shops; also a residential neighbourhood. The city sets conduct rules and has addressed visitor pressure.
Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, Hamburg A broad entertainment and nightlife area, including erotic venues. Official tourism information describes a mix of nightlife and cultural venues.
Kabukicho, Tokyo A major nightlife and entertainment area with hotels. Official travel guidance describes the area; the U.S. State Department advises caution in entertainment districts.
Patpong, Bangkok Named alongside the other districts in a scholarly destination list; current particulars are not established here. Reliable current details about boundaries, visitor rules, and legal context are not established here.

De Wallen, Amsterdam

A neighbourhood under visitor pressure

De Wallen is associated with window brothels and sex shops, but it is also a lived-in part of Amsterdam. The Amsterdam City Archives describes it as one of the city’s top three tourist destinations, without giving a visitor count or a measurement year. That qualitative description should not be mistaken for a current numerical ranking. The City of Amsterdam’s visitor guidance asks visitors to respect the people who live and work in the city centre.

Rules and proposed changes

At the time of the city guidance, guided tours in the Red Light District are not permitted, and alcohol and cannabis use in the city-centre public area is forbidden. These municipal rules can change, so check the current visitor guidance before going. The city says it plans to reduce window locations on the Wallen by moving some to a proposed Erotic Centre; that is a plan, not evidence that the centre is operating. The city’s Erotic Centre information outlines the proposal.

Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, Hamburg

More than an erotic district

The Reeperbahn sits within the wider St. Pauli nightlife area. Hamburg’s official tourism information describes a mix that includes bars, theatres, nightclubs, restaurants, and erotic venues, as well as nightlife on surrounding streets. Calling it only a sex-work district misses the breadth of its present-day entertainment character. Hamburg’s Reeperbahn guide provides the city’s overview.

Why it is called the Reeperbahn

The name comes from rope makers, known as Reepschläger, who needed a long, open stretch to lay out and make rope. The area later developed into an entertainment quarter. Hamburg’s history of the Reeperbahn explains the name’s origin and the district’s development.

Kabukicho, Tokyo

A nightlife and entertainment area

Kabukicho is part of Shinjuku’s nightlife landscape, with hotels and entertainment venues. It is more accurate to describe it as a nightlife district than to equate it with Amsterdam’s window-brothel area. GO TOKYO’s guide to Shinjuku covers the area’s visitor setting.

What the travel warning says

The U.S. Department of State advises caution in Kabukicho and other Japanese entertainment districts, citing reports of assault, theft, drinks being spiked, and excessive bills. This is a U.S. government travel advisory about reported risks in nightlife districts; it does not establish that every venue is unsafe or that every visitor will encounter a problem. Check the current U.S. Japan Travel Advisory for up-to-date guidance.

Patpong, Bangkok

Patpong appears in a scholarly working paper’s list of sexual-tourism destinations alongside De Wallen, the Reeperbahn, and Kabukicho. That supports its recognition as an example, but the paper is not a current local guide or a ranking. Current boundaries, visitor rules, and legal context are not established by the available sources, so it would be misleading to present those details as settled. The scholarly destination list names the district.

Why this is not a list of five

The evidence supports four examples, with uneven source depth, rather than five districts that can be responsibly compared as current and prominent. A former red-light identity should not be counted as a current district: for example, GO TOKYO describes Shinjuku Golden Gai as having been a red-light district after World War II, which is historical context. Its Golden Gai page does not establish it as a fifth current example.

The distinctions matter: De Wallen is a residential area associated with window brothels; Hamburg’s Reeperbahn is a mixed entertainment quarter; Kabukicho is a nightlife district with a documented travel advisory; and Patpong is less well documented in the sources cited here. None of these descriptions establishes that sex-work laws are the same across the four locations.
