Vietnamese authorities, working with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) and U.S. agencies, took action against FMovies and associated piracy sites on August 29, 2024. The conclusion is further supported by the U.S. Department of Justice’s report that two people connected to the operation were convicted and sentenced in April 2025.
That does not mean every website using the FMovies name has disappeared. A later domain that loads, redirects, or displays a familiar logo is not proof that the original service has returned.
What happened to FMovies?
The original FMovies network was part of a large unauthorized streaming operation based in Hanoi, Vietnam. On August 29, 2024, Hanoi Police worked with ACE, Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, and the Department of Justice’s International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property program.
The action covered FMovies and a group of associated brands and domains, including Bflixz, Flixtorz, Movies7, MyFlixer, AniWave, and Vidsrc.to. ACE described the action as a shutdown of a criminal copyright-piracy network rather than an ordinary website outage.

The scale helps explain why the takedown attracted international attention. According to ACE, the operation recorded more than 6.7 billion visits between January 2023 and June 2024, reaching nearly 374 million visits in a single month at its peak.
For documentary viewers, the important distinction is that FMovies did not simply lose a hosting provider for a few hours. The operation was targeted through a coordinated enforcement action involving authorities in Vietnam and U.S. intellectual-property and homeland-security agencies.
Was FMovies permanently shut down?
The best-supported answer is yes for the original FMovies operation. “Permanently” cannot sensibly describe every future domain that might copy the name, but the evidence supports saying that the original network was dismantled.
There are three reasons:
- The 2024 action was described as an enforcement shutdown. It involved Vietnamese authorities and international partners, and it covered several connected brands and domains.
- The operation’s domain history showed instability before it disappeared. Reporting during 2024 indicated moves from FMovies.to to Fmoviesz.to and then FMovies24.to. New content reportedly stopped appearing, and the service ultimately went offline.
- The legal case continued after the websites disappeared. In April 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice said that two individuals connected with the FMovies operation had been convicted and sentenced. That subsequent criminal case makes a simple temporary hosting outage an unlikely explanation.
Domain blocking, search demotion, redirects, and other technical measures may also have affected what users saw during the transition. Those details do not change the central conclusion: the original operation is no longer a functioning, trustworthy source of movies or television programs.

Why do “working FMovies” websites still appear?
Piracy brands are often copied, re-registered, redirected, or imitated. A domain may use the FMovies name because its operator wants to capture searches from people looking for the former service. It may also be a mirror, a parked domain, a redirect, or an entirely unrelated site.
That is why a search result or status page claiming that “FMovies is back” should be treated cautiously. An uptime checker can sometimes show that a particular domain responds to a web request—perhaps with an HTTP 200 status—but that only indicates technical reachability at that moment. It does not establish:
- that the domain is operated by the original FMovies owners;
- that it is legally authorized to distribute the films or programs it displays;
- that it is safe to use;
- that it will remain online; or
- that it has any connection to the 2024 operation.
Current monitoring reports for individual domains such as FMovies24.to can be inconsistent. Such reports should be understood as narrow, time-sensitive observations about one address—not evidence of an official comeback.
Do not treat a clone as a safe replacement
A site that imitates FMovies may expose visitors to risks that have nothing to do with watching a documentary. Be especially wary if an alleged mirror asks you to:

- enter a credit-card number or other payment details to “unlock” playback;
- install a browser extension, media player, codec, or desktop application;
- allow browser notifications;
- disable security software or change browser settings;
- download a file before the video will play; or
- create an account using a password that you also use elsewhere.
Do not download unknown software or grant permissions simply because a page displays the FMovies logo. Do not assume that an HTTPS padlock means a site is legitimate: encryption protects the connection to a domain, but it does not prove that the operator owns the brand or has rights to the content.
If you already entered a password on a suspicious site, change it anywhere else you reused it and enable multifactor authentication where available. If you entered payment information, contact your card issuer and monitor the account. If you downloaded an unfamiliar program, disconnect it from sensitive accounts and have it checked using reputable security tools.
What can you use instead?
The safest replacement for an unauthorized movie site is a verified legal service. Availability differs by country, licensing territory, device, and date, so check the catalog in your location before relying on any particular title.
Free, ad-supported options
Pluto TV advertises free movies and television channels. It is a legitimate ad-supported option, but its catalog and channel lineup can change, and the selection available in the United States may differ from what is offered elsewhere.

Other legitimate free services may also be available through public broadcasters, studio-supported platforms, or ad-supported streaming catalogs. A documentary’s availability can change without notice, so searching for the title on an authorized service or a reputable availability guide is more reliable than trusting an old list.
Borrow movies through a library
Hoopla lets users borrow movies and television programs through participating libraries. You generally need a library card from an eligible library, and not every library offers the service or the same catalog. Borrowing limits and availability are set by the library and licensing arrangements.
For many viewers, this is one of the closest legal equivalents to a free streaming site: there is no need to visit an unverified mirror, and the cost may be covered by an existing library membership.
Make an older television usable

- Search the documentary’s official website or distributor. Filmmakers and distributors often list current rental, purchase, broadcast, or library options.
- Check authorized streaming apps directly. Catalogs can vary by country and may change after the article or search result you found was published.
- Look at your public library’s digital services. Hoopla and similar services require participation by the local library.
- Use a legitimate rental or purchase option when necessary. A one-time rental may be cheaper—and considerably safer—than dealing with a site that demands downloads or payment details without clear ownership.
- Verify the domain before signing in. Use the service’s official website or app store listing rather than a pop-up or redirect from an unknown streaming page.
What the shutdown means for FMovies searches
Searches for “FMovies working,” “new FMovies domain,” or “FMovies alternatives” may continue to return pages for years. Search visibility is not evidence of continuity. The brand’s documented domain changes, the international enforcement action, and the later convictions all point to the original operation having ended.
