Fixing a Crunchyroll Black Screen in Chrome: A Step-by-Step Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Crunchyroll’s player is black in Chrome, first play another episode and test the same one in an Incognito window. Those checks help distinguish a title or service problem from an extension or Chrome-profile issue. Then update Chrome, check protected-content permissions, clear Crunchyroll’s site data, and test hardware acceleration—without reinstalling Chrome or changing DNS as a first resort.

Identify what is failing before changing settings

A black video with audio points to a different set of possibilities than a blank page or a player that never stops spinning. Note whether controls are visible, whether fullscreen changes the symptom, and whether the problem affects one episode or every title.

  • Black video with audio or visible controls: Check extensions, protected content, and graphics acceleration.
  • Blank player or endless spinner: Check site data, browser permissions, network, and whether Crunchyroll is loading elsewhere.
  • A DRM, MED, or SHAK error: Update Chrome and verify protected-content settings.
  • Only one episode fails: Try another episode and another device before treating it as a Chrome fault.

Crunchyroll’s browser troubleshooting covers black or blank screens and browser playback problems: Why can’t I watch videos on my browser?

Run the quickest diagnostic tests

Try another episode and check whether the service loads

Play a different episode, then check whether Crunchyroll’s homepage and account pages open normally. If just one title fails, the issue may be tied to that episode or its availability in your region rather than Chrome. If every title fails, test the same account on another browser or device.

Open an Incognito window

  1. In desktop Chrome, select More â‹® > New Incognito window.
  2. Open Crunchyroll, sign in, and play the same episode.

If playback works in Incognito, an extension, saved site data, or a normal-profile setting is a likely cause. Incognito is a test, not necessarily a permanent fix; you may need to sign in again, and extensions are generally disabled there unless you have allowed them. Google also recommends Incognito as a way to troubleshoot video playback: Fix videos and games that won’t play in Chrome.

Disable extensions one at a time

  1. Go to More â‹® > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Temporarily turn extensions off, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, VPN or proxy add-ons, and video-enhancement tools.
  3. Reload Crunchyroll and test playback.
  4. If it works, turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading after each, to identify the conflict.

Adjust, whitelist, or replace only the extension that causes the problem; do not leave security protections disabled without a reason. Crunchyroll says add-ons and VPN use can interfere with browser playback, and that VPN use is unsupported: Quality issues on videos (Browsers).

Update Chrome and reload the player

Update Chrome

  1. In desktop Chrome, select More â‹® > Help > About Google Chrome.
  2. Let Chrome check for updates, then select Relaunch if prompted.
  3. Open Crunchyroll again and test the episode.

On Android, update Chrome through the Google Play Store’s app updates. Google’s instructions are in its Chrome video troubleshooting guide for Android.

Crunchyroll’s support pages currently disagree about minimum Chrome versions: some list Chrome 117 or newer, while its newer supported-devices page lists Chrome 123 or newer. Rather than rely on the older threshold, install the newest Chrome version available for your operating system. See Crunchyroll’s supported devices and website getting-started guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hard-refresh Crunchyroll

After updating Chrome or changing a setting, reload the page without relying on the usual cached version:

  • Windows or Linux: press Ctrl + F5.
  • macOS: press Shift + Command + R.

A hard refresh does not clear cookies or all cached site data. Crunchyroll includes it among its browser playback troubleshooting steps: Basic troubleshooting for buffering, freezing, and other video play issues.

Check JavaScript and protected-content permissions

Allow JavaScript

  1. Open More â‹® > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript.
  2. Make sure sites are allowed to use JavaScript, or allow it for Crunchyroll if you have set a more restrictive rule.
  3. Reload Crunchyroll.

JavaScript is needed for site functions and playback controls. Google lists it among the settings to check when media will not load: Chrome video troubleshooting.

Allow protected content

Streaming services may need Chrome’s protected-content permission. A blocked permission can prevent playback or produce a DRM-related error, though DRM is only one possible cause of a black screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In desktop Chrome, open More â‹® > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Protected content IDs.
  2. Choose the setting that allows sites to play protected content.
  3. On Android, open More â‹® > Settings > Site settings > Protected content and check that it is not set to Blocked.
  4. Reload Crunchyroll and retry the episode.

See Google’s instructions for protected content on desktop Chrome and protected content on Android Chrome. Crunchyroll identifies errors such as MED and SHAK as reasons to check DRM settings and browser updates: What do I do with a DRM error?

Do not download Widevine from an unofficial site, install a codec pack, or change random Chrome flags. Widevine is integrated into supported browsers; Google directs end users to the application or service provider for help: Widevine support.

Clear Crunchyroll’s site data first

Start with Crunchyroll-specific data rather than wiping all browser data. Chrome’s exact controls can vary by version, so if the address-bar site controls do not offer a clear option, search Chrome Settings for site data or cookies.

  1. Open Crunchyroll in Chrome and select the site-information icon beside the address bar.
  2. Open the site’s cookie or data controls and remove stored data for Crunchyroll.
  3. Close the tab, open Crunchyroll again, sign in, and test playback.

If that does not help, use More â‹® > Delete browsing data. Choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, delete the data, restart Chrome, and sign in again. Clearing cookies can sign you out of Crunchyroll and other sites. Google and Crunchyroll both include cookies and cached files in playback troubleshooting: Google Chrome and Crunchyroll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test Chrome’s graphics acceleration

Audio with a black video, fullscreen-only failures, or a problem that began after a Chrome or graphics update can point to a rendering conflict. Turning off hardware acceleration is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.

  1. Open More â‹® > Settings > System.
  2. Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available or the equivalent current hardware-acceleration control.
  3. Select Relaunch, then test Crunchyroll.

If there is no improvement—or performance gets worse—turn acceleration back on. Disabling it can increase CPU use or reduce efficiency. Google documents hardware-acceleration troubleshooting at Fix Chrome if it crashes or won’t open. If the issue began with a graphics-driver or operating-system update, check for a suitable update from your computer or graphics-device maker.

Check VPN, security software, and network conditions

Test without a VPN or proxy

Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and reload the video. Crunchyroll does not support VPN use for playback, and VPNs can introduce compatibility or connection problems. Do not use one as a default fix for a black screen.

Test security software cautiously

If a security product appears to block streaming, use its brief pause or exception controls for a test, then restore protection immediately. Do not uninstall antivirus software. On a work or school device, ask the administrator rather than changing managed settings. Crunchyroll includes security software among possible playback conflicts in its basic video troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the network is the common factor

  1. Try another website or streaming service.
  2. Test Crunchyroll on a different Wi-Fi network or phone hotspot, if available.
  3. Restart the router and pause large downloads or other avoidable network use.
  4. If several devices on the same network fail, investigate the network rather than changing Chrome alone.

Crunchyroll recommends checking the connection, reducing congestion, restarting the router, and trying another browser in its browser quality guidance.

Consider DNS only if the broader connection points that way

If streaming problems affect multiple devices on one network and other checks have not helped, DNS may be worth investigating. Crunchyroll lists public resolvers including Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) and Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) in its connectivity guidance. A DNS change affects the device or network, not just Crunchyroll; it will not fix a blocked DRM permission, extension conflict, corrupted site data, or GPU issue. Record the original settings first, and do not change DNS on a managed school, workplace, or parental-control network without authorization.

Use another browser or device to isolate the fault

Crunchyroll lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari among supported browser families, though its support pages differ on minimum versions. Use another supported browser as a comparison, not as proof of the cause.

Test result What it suggests Next focus
Works in Firefox or Edge on the same computer The fault is more likely specific to Chrome’s profile, extensions, permissions, or rendering. Recheck extensions, site data, protected content, and hardware acceleration.
Fails in every browser on that computer The operating system, GPU, security software, account, or network may be involved. Test another device or network and note any error code.
Works on another device using the same account and network The original computer or Chrome setup is the stronger suspect. Continue with Chrome profile and graphics checks.
Fails across devices and networks A service-side, account, title-availability, or regional issue becomes more plausible. Check title availability and contact Crunchyroll if the failure persists.

Crunchyroll’s browser and device listings are available on its browser playback page and supported-devices page.

When the issue may not be Chrome

A single title failing while others play can indicate an episode-specific problem or regional availability. Crunchyroll’s catalog varies by country or region, so check whether the title is available where you are, especially if you are traveling or recently changed networks. A different browser does not change licensing availability; do not try to bypass regional restrictions. See Crunchyroll’s loading and regional-access guidance.

If many titles fail on multiple devices, browsers, and networks, Chrome settings are unlikely to be the whole explanation. Check Crunchyroll’s service status through its support channels and report the issue rather than repeating local browser changes.

What to send Crunchyroll Support

If the problem continues after the relevant checks, a precise report helps support distinguish a Chrome, account, title, or network issue. Include:

  • Chrome version and operating-system version.
  • Your country or region, the affected title, and episode.
  • Whether audio plays, controls appear, or an error code is shown.
  • Whether Incognito, another browser, or another device works.
  • Whether the issue affects other titles or happens only on one network.
  • A screenshot or short screen recording, plus the troubleshooting steps you already tried.

Crunchyroll asks for device or browser details, country or region, error messages, affected titles, and screenshots when relevant: Basic troubleshooting for video play issues.
