Fix YouTube’s Audio Sample Rate Mismatch Warning in FFmpeg

YouTube’s audioSampleRateMismatch warning means the primary and backup streams use different audio rates. Match FFmpeg’s encoded output settings and check the exact Live Control Room message.

YouTube’s audioSampleRateMismatch warning means your primary and backup streams use different audio sample rates. Set FFmpeg’s encoded output to the same rate on both paths, then check YouTube Live Control Room again. If YouTube reports a sample-rate warning without a primary/backup mismatch, follow the rate specified in that exact message: YouTube’s API lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended, while its Help example asks for 44.1 kHz.

What the warning means

YouTube’s Live Streaming API defines audioSampleRateMismatch as a difference between the audio sample rates of the primary and backup streams. Its guidance is to configure both streams with the same rate: YouTube Live Streaming API configuration issues.

This is distinct from a warning about the audio sample rate itself. The API issue table lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended rates. YouTube Help’s example dashboard error instead says to correct the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. Use the rate indicated by the message currently shown in your Live Control Room rather than assuming that one rate is right for every configuration: YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors.

Set FFmpeg’s output rate

FFmpeg’s audio sampling-rate option is -ar. Place it among the output options before the destination, and specify the rate in hertz. For example, use -ar 44100 for 44.1 kHz or -ar 48000 for 48 kHz, choosing the rate that fits YouTube’s warning and your stream configuration. FFmpeg documents -ar as the audio sampling-frequency option: FFmpeg codecs documentation.

ffmpeg [input options] -i INPUT [other output options] -ar 44100 OUTPUT

This is a command pattern, not a complete command for every live source or ingest protocol. Keep the output rate consistent on the primary and backup paths. The input file’s sample rate alone does not establish the rate being encoded and sent; verify the output stream.

Check and clear the warning

  1. Read the exact health message. In YouTube Live Control Room, distinguish audioSampleRateMismatch (primary and backup differ) from an individual sample-rate warning.
  2. Check both encoded outputs. Confirm the rate FFmpeg sends on the primary path and, if configured, on the backup path. Do not infer it solely from the source audio.
  3. Set the output option on both paths. Add the same -ar <Hz> value to each FFmpeg output. Use 44100 or 48000 Hz as appropriate to the specific warning and configuration.
  4. Recheck Live Control Room. YouTube’s dashboard displays health messages with timestamps, and an unresolved message continues to appear. Confirm that the warning clears after the streams use matching settings.

If the warning remains

  • Primary and backup still differ: Check that the same output rate is applied to both FFmpeg commands or outputs, not only to one path.
  • YouTube reports a sample-rate issue instead: Follow the rate named in the current message. The API’s recommendation and Help’s example are not identical, so do not treat 48 kHz as a universal fix.
  • The configured rate looks right, but YouTube still warns: Verify the encoded output actually sent to YouTube, then review the timestamped health message again. The source rate and output rate need not be the same.
