If FFmpeg reports Connection timed out while streaming to YouTube over Indian broadband, first verify the exact server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Those are YouTube’s stated first checks for a timeout. The error alone does not show whether the cause is the URL, FFmpeg’s TLS support, or network connectivity—and being in India does not by itself point to an ISP or regional fault.
What a connection timeout does—and does not—tell you
A timeout means FFmpeg did not complete an expected connection step within the relevant wait period. That message alone does not identify whether the failure occurred during DNS lookup, the TCP connection, TLS negotiation, the RTMP handshake, or later media transmission. Capture the complete command and surrounding output before changing settings.
YouTube uses RTMPS, an RTMP-based stream carried through an SSL connection. Google for Developers describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” An Indian broadband connection is useful context for troubleshooting, but is not evidence of a country-wide outage, a particular ISP blocking ingest, or a faulty router.
Check the destination URL and RTMPS support first
1. Compare the output URL with YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the live stream’s settings in Live Control Room.
- Compare the server URL shown there with the destination in your FFmpeg command. Check that the protocol and server are the ones currently assigned to that stream.
- Use RTMPS as YouTube instructs; do not substitute a guessed ingest hostname or reuse an old URL without checking the current settings.

2. Check the FFmpeg build actually installed
RTMPS support can depend on how FFmpeg was built and packaged. Check the installed executable and its build configuration, along with the documentation for that package; do not assume every FFmpeg build includes the same TLS and RTMPS capabilities. If the build lacks the needed support, use a build that provides it before diagnosing the broadband connection.
3. Treat port 443 as a targeted check, not a universal fix
YouTube mentions explicitly specifying port 443 in its guidance for an invalid SSL certificate. Its separate timeout guidance emphasizes checking the server URL and encoder support. A port change may therefore be relevant to a particular configuration, but appending :443 is not a guaranteed fix for every timeout. Follow the current server information in YouTube Studio and the guidance for the specific error you observe.

Record enough detail to locate the failure
Save the full FFmpeg invocation and unabridged error output, including lines before the timeout. Redact the stream key before sharing anything: it is a credential that can let someone else broadcast to your channel. Keep the exact endpoint visible if safe to do so, but remove any key or token embedded in it.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the time of the attempt, and the exact error sequence.
- Note whether FFmpeg appears to fail before connecting, during setup, or after it begins sending data.
- Record the server URL and protocol without exposing the stream key.
- Note whether the same command behaves differently on another network, if one is available. A difference is useful evidence, but does not by itself prove the ISP is responsible.
Separate encoder problems from network problems
YouTube advises checking that the encoder is working and then testing outbound internet connectivity; if a connectivity test identifies a problem, it recommends contacting the ISP. A speed test can help establish whether general connectivity is impaired, but a satisfactory speed result does not prove that the specific YouTube ingest host and port are reachable.

- Confirm that FFmpeg is using the intended input and output and that its local process is running normally.
- Check outbound connectivity using an appropriate network test. Treat a speed test as an initial check, not as proof of reachability to the ingest endpoint.
- If available, repeat the connection attempt from a separate network and compare the full logs. This can help narrow where to investigate, without establishing a regional fault on its own.
- If connectivity testing finds a problem, give your ISP the timestamp, destination host and port where known, and relevant error lines. Keep the stream key private.
For the general checks, consult YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting page. The ISP is a reasonable next contact when connectivity testing indicates a network issue, not a conclusion to draw from the words “Indian broadband” alone.
Use FFmpeg timeout and reconnect options carefully
FFmpeg documents timeout and reconnection controls, but these are protocol-specific and can depend on whether FFmpeg is reading input or writing output. Options such as timeout, connect_timeout, and reconnect_on_network_error are not universal switches that can be pasted into every output command. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the installed build’s help for the protocol actually in use.

Changing a timeout value may change how long a process waits; it does not repair a wrong URL, add missing RTMPS support, or establish that YouTube is reachable. Do not copy HTTP input reconnection flags into an RTMPS output command unless the relevant documentation says they apply.

A connection timeout is distinct from a stream that reaches YouTube but sends unsupported, malformed, or insufficient media. If FFmpeg connects and YouTube receives the stream, check the status and diagnostic description in YouTube’s stream-health guidance. Those media diagnostics become relevant after connection succeeds; they do not explain a failure to establish the connection.
