To run a 24/7 YouTube sleep-music channel with FFmpeg, enable live streaming on an eligible YouTube channel, prepare a video-and-audio file you have rights to broadcast, and send it to YouTube’s live ingest server with FFmpeg. You’ll also need a plan for interruptions: a single FFmpeg process is not a guarantee that one YouTube live event will stay connected indefinitely.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, eligible for live streaming, and free of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before launch.
  • A recording with the sleep music and, if you want a visual, a video track such as a still image or slow-moving scene. FFmpeg will repeat the input; it will not create music or visuals for you.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can remain powered on and connected to the internet. The command below is an example to adapt and test with your file and FFmpeg build, not a verified production configuration.
  • A reliable outbound internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate; check upload performance, not download speed.
  • Permission to broadcast the music and any accompanying visuals, including any archive YouTube creates.

Enable live streaming and create the YouTube broadcast

Activate the channel’s live access

In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and complete any verification or activation prompts. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm that live streaming is available before you plan your first broadcast.

Create an encoder stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and use the encoder workflow to create or schedule a stream.
  2. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingest endpoint; the key authenticates your encoder.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put it in public code, screenshots, or a shared configuration file. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
  4. Choose RTMPS where YouTube provides that option. Copy the URL and key from your own Live Control Room rather than relying on a server address found in an old tutorial.

Prepare a file that can loop cleanly

Check the audio and video tracks

Inspect the source file before starting. Confirm that it contains the tracks you expect, plays for its full duration, and has no unwanted silence or abrupt ending. A sleep-music file with a visual track can be sent as-is; an audio-only file needs a video track or another compatible visual source for a conventional video livestream.

FFmpeg can repeat an input, but repeating is not the same as crossfading. If a loop boundary has a click, silence, or sudden change in the music or picture, edit the source into a smoother loop before streaming.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up private output variables

Set YOUTUBE_OUTPUT to the complete RTMPS output address for the stream, including the stream key, in the format supplied for your encoder connection. Avoid saving the key in a script that others can read. In a Unix-like shell, for example:

export YOUTUBE_OUTPUT='paste-your-private-complete-rtmps-output-address-here'
export VIDEO_BITRATE='set-a-bitrate-supported-for-your-resolution-and-upload-link'
export BUFFER_SIZE='set-a-buffer-size-for-your-encoder-configuration'

The values for bitrate and buffer size are not universal: choose them using YouTube’s current encoder guidance, your intended resolution and frame rate, and a test of your upload capacity. Keep at least the recommended 20% upload headroom.

Start FFmpeg and send the loop to YouTube

Example command for a file with audio and video

From a terminal on the machine that will stay online, run this example after setting the variables above and replacing the filename. It reads the file in real time, repeats it, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, requests a two-second keyframe interval, and sends the output over RTMPS:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "sleep-music.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -b:v "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -maxrate "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -bufsize "$BUFFER_SIZE"
  -force_key_frames "expr:gte(t,n_forced*2)"
  -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT"

This is an adaptable starting point, not a promise that every file or FFmpeg build will accept the same settings. Check that your installed build includes the selected encoder and test the actual source file. YouTube recommends constant bitrate, supports H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Select resolution and bitrate for the content and connection; do not assume the highest resolution is the best choice if the upload link cannot sustain it.

If your source is audio-only

Add a compatible visual source before using the command. One option is to make a video file containing the artwork and music, then loop that finished file. Another is to combine a still image and audio in FFmpeg, but the exact input options depend on the image format, audio duration, and installed build. Test the result locally before connecting it to YouTube; the audio-only command above will not supply a picture track by itself.

Preview and monitor the broadcast

After FFmpeg connects, check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast. Confirm that audio is audible, the image is correct, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health. Keep the FFmpeg process visible or monitored, and watch for encoder errors, loss of upload, or a YouTube-side disconnection.

Keep a 24/7 stream running through interruptions

Understand what looping does—and does not do

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely while that FFmpeg process continues to run. It does not prevent a computer from sleeping, a server from rebooting, a network from failing, or YouTube from ending or disconnecting the stream.

Test a recovery plan

FFmpeg’s RTMP FIFO muxer documents recovery attempts after temporary output-network failures, and FFmpeg protocol options describe reconnect behavior for some network inputs. Those mechanisms do not guarantee continuity on YouTube’s side. For a basic setup, arrange process supervision or alerting on the chosen host, then test what happens after you stop FFmpeg, lose connectivity, and start it again. Confirm in YouTube Studio whether the existing broadcast can resume or whether you need to start a new encoder session.

A restart loop alone is not a complete monitoring plan: it may repeatedly reconnect without telling you that the audience is seeing an interruption. A backup encoder or network can improve resilience, but is an optional design choice rather than a stated YouTube requirement. There is no universal minimum computer specification or hosting price established here; cost and capability depend on the machine or server you choose.

Know what happens to the replay

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a continuous broadcast longer than that. If keeping a full replay matters, plan and test discrete broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, and check the current behavior in Studio rather than assuming a single day-long event will be archived in full.

Clear rights for the music before going live

YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the creator to have the rights necessary for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights; archived material is also subject to the applicable agreement. A “royalty-free” label by itself does not establish that a track’s license permits this specific use. Check that the license covers live broadcast, relevant territories, duration, monetization if applicable, and any archive or replay. Keep records of the license and its conditions.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

What you see Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not offer the live workflow Live access is not activated, the channel is not eligible, or a restriction applies. Verify the channel and its live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube does not receive a signal The output address or key is wrong, the key was reset, or the connection is blocked or unstable. Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room broadcast, update the private output value, and check the host’s outbound connection.
FFmpeg reports that an encoder or option is unavailable The installed FFmpeg build does not support the selected encoder or option. Check the installed build’s available encoders and options, then adapt the command and test locally before going live.
The stream buffers or loses quality The chosen stream bitrate is too demanding for the available upload, or upload performance is inconsistent. Measure upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower the stream bitrate or resolution if needed.
The picture or sound cuts out at the loop boundary The source file itself has an abrupt ending or beginning. Edit and test a smoother loop; repeating the file does not add a crossfade.
The stream stops after FFmpeg or the host disconnects The process, computer, server, or network stopped, or YouTube ended the connection. Inspect FFmpeg and Studio status, restore the process or connection, and follow the restart procedure you tested. Confirm whether Studio permits the broadcast to resume.
A long broadcast has no complete replay The event exceeded the documented under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold. For replay retention, test separate broadcasts under 12 hours and verify the resulting archives in Studio.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not leave a computer or server running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
