Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To fix YouTube stream disconnects involving Linode, first identify which connection is failing: the encoder-to-YouTube connection, or—if you use a Linode-hosted RTMP relay—both the encoder-to-Linode and Linode-to-YouTube legs. Then check the stream key and ingest URL, confirm the sender can sustain the chosen output, and inspect relay logs and firewall rules if a relay is involved. A relay adds another service and network leg; it is not automatically a reliability fix.
Map the stream path before changing settings
“Streaming from Linode” can describe different setups. In one, an encoder runs on a Linode instance and sends directly to YouTube. In another, an encoder—often OBS on a local computer—sends to a Linode-hosted RTMP relay, which forwards the feed to YouTube. Akamai’s RTMP server guide describes the relay architecture; it does not establish that every Linode stream uses it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover sending directly to YouTube.
- Direct: encoder → YouTube. Investigate the encoder, its network connection, and the YouTube ingest configuration.
- Through a relay: encoder → Linode relay → YouTube. Check both network legs, the relay process, and its configuration.
Write down which machine encodes the video and which machine makes the final connection to YouTube. Record the disconnection time, the encoder’s status or error, any relay log entries at that time, and the stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep a record of the existing settings and change one thing at a time so a retest can show what helped.
Check the stream key and ingest URL
Refresh credentials when authentication is suspect
If a third-party encoder fails to start, YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends copying the current stream key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder. If the software signs in to YouTube rather than using a stream key, YouTube directs users to that software’s provider. Treat the key as a credential: keep it private, and reset it and update the encoder if it may have been exposed. YouTube explains stream-key settings in its encoder settings guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the matching RTMP or RTMPS endpoint
For an RTMPS connection, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room instead of assuming a saved RTMP URL is still appropriate. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says that for an invalid-SSL-certificate error, verify the URL and, if needed, try port 443. For a connection timeout, verify the URL and check for RTMPS support. Apply those checks when the error matches; don’t change ports or protocols without a reason.
Check encoding load and upload capacity
Measure upload capacity on the machine that sends the YouTube leg. If the encoder runs on Linode, a speed test on an unrelated home computer does not measure the VPS’s connection; if a local encoder sends to a relay, assess the local-to-relay leg as well as the relay’s outbound leg. Compare sustainable upload capacity with the selected bitrate and leave room for fluctuations. A single speed-test result cannot guarantee a stable stream throughout an event.

Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate need to be considered together. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the stream profile rather than copying a bitrate detached from its resolution and frame rate. In the guidance on that page, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Test representative motion and audio in advance; if YouTube’s stream health indicates delivery trouble or the sender cannot sustain the output, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
If you use a Linode relay, inspect its service and firewalls
Check the relay and its destination
At the disconnection time, confirm the RTMP relay process is running and inspect its logs for errors or restarts. Verify that its push destination is the current YouTube ingest URL and that the configured stream key remains valid. Akamai’s relay guide explains a Linode-hosted server forwarding a stream to YouTube; it is an architectural example, not evidence about the state of your particular instance.

Check outbound as well as inbound firewall rules
Inspect both the operating-system firewall and any Akamai Cloud Firewall attached to the Linode or its interface. Akamai documents configurable inbound and outbound rules in its Cloud Firewall documentation. Check whether outbound traffic to the actual configured YouTube endpoint is allowed. Do not open broad inbound ports merely because a sample relay deployment uses them: the ports needed for an encoder to reach an inbound relay are not the same question as the relay’s outbound connection to YouTube.
Akamai’s service troubleshooting guidance recommends checking firewall rules and logs when an application service cannot be reached. Use the application’s logs and a specific suspected block to guide a narrow rule change rather than changing firewall policy broadly.

Don’t treat ping as a test of RTMP(S)
Ping uses ICMP, which is different from TCP or UDP. Akamai explains this distinction in its network troubleshooting guide. A successful ping does not prove an RTMP(S) session is healthy, and a failed ping by itself does not establish that YouTube ingest is blocked. Prefer the encoder or relay’s connection status and logs, timestamp-correlated with the failure, and checks suited to the actual destination and protocol.

- Save the original configuration and evidence. Note the settings, errors, log timestamps, and YouTube stream-health message before editing anything.
- Match the correction to the symptom. Refresh a key if authentication is suspect; correct the URL or protocol if the connection error points there; reduce output demands if capacity or stream health indicates a problem; or adjust a specific firewall rule only if the evidence identifies a block.
- Repair the relay only when its evidence points to a relay fault. Use its service status and logs to decide whether a restart or configuration repair is warranted.
- Test before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends an advance test, starting the encoder early, checking the preview, and monitoring stream quality. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate, then compare the same connection, log, and health indicators. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
Direct connection or Linode relay?
A direct encoder-to-YouTube setup has one network leg to diagnose. A Linode relay may suit a deliberate distribution design such as forwarding to multiple destinations, but it adds a service, logs, firewall rules, and another network leg to monitor. Choose a relay when its role is needed, not simply as an assumed cure for disconnects. Akamai’s guide documents the relay approach, while YouTube supports direct encoder ingestion.
