To fix a YouTube stream that disconnects from FFmpeg on Vultr Cloud Compute, first find out which link is failing: FFmpeg or its input, YouTube ingest, or the instance’s outbound network path. Check the exact FFmpeg error and YouTube Live Control Room health message at the same timestamp before changing settings. YouTube’s guidance covers ingest configuration and troubleshooting; it does not establish a Vultr-specific cause, so the instance region, plan, logs, and network measurements matter.
Find where the stream is failing
Record the disconnect time and the exact error shown by FFmpeg and YouTube Live Control Room. Then check whether FFmpeg exited, whether its input is still delivering frames, and whether a local recording or archive continues to grow. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, inspecting the local archive, and testing the outbound connection.
- FFmpeg exited or its input stalled: investigate the input source, FFmpeg process, and host before changing YouTube settings.
- Local output continues but YouTube reports an ingest problem: check the stream URL and key, codec, bitrate, and the specific Live Control Room health message.
- Local output and YouTube configuration look healthy, but transmission fails: investigate the instance’s outbound route and its stability. This is a diagnostic inference, not evidence of a particular Vultr fault.
Use the message shown in Live Control Room as evidence: YouTube’s live error guidance can identify format, codec, bitrate, or other configuration mismatches. A healthy local encoder alongside an ingest problem narrows the investigation, but does not by itself identify the cause. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide and live streaming error messages.
Verify the YouTube stream URL, key, and encoding settings
Refresh the stream key and confirm the destination
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current stream key and server URL into the FFmpeg configuration. A stale or incorrect key can prevent a third-party encoder from starting. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or examples. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions explain how to get the current key and update the encoder.

Match the encoder to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Requirements can vary with stream configuration, so resolve any specific Live Control Room warning rather than assuming one setting fits every stream.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Vultr instance or network route can sustain the rate. Choose resolution and bitrate together; if available outbound bandwidth is inadequate, YouTube advises lowering the resolution. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

Check the instance’s outbound bandwidth and stability
Measure upload capacity from the Vultr instance, ideally while the stream is running or under representative load. Compare it with the total bitrate of the outgoing stream, including audio; if sending more than one stream, include all feeds. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate. As YouTube puts it: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
An idle speed test may not represent conditions during the event. Contention or intermittent loss can affect transmission even when an idle test looks sufficient; that is a practical diagnostic consideration, not a YouTube rule. If bandwidth is short, lower the resolution or bitrate to a supported setting and run another representative test. If average capacity appears sufficient but disconnects continue, collect timestamped FFmpeg errors and outbound network measurements.

The available guidance does not establish a Vultr-specific egress cap, route problem, or regional incident. Do not attribute a disconnect to Vultr without evidence. If escalating to the provider, include the instance plan and region, timestamps, relevant logs, and measurements. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips explain the bandwidth requirements.
Use FFmpeg recovery options at the correct layer
HTTP reconnect flags apply to HTTP input
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed for its HTTP protocol input path. They can help with eligible HTTP input failures, depending on the options and build. They are not a universal reconnect switch for an RTMP output connection to YouTube. See FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation.

FIFO muxer recovery can attempt to recover output
FFmpeg documents this FIFO muxer pattern for attempting recovery after a temporary output failure:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is a documented example, not a tested command for your input, installed FFmpeg build, or YouTube stream key. Replace the input and destination carefully, verify that your build supports the options, and test before relying on it. Recovery and buffering may help with temporary transmission failures; dropping packets on overflow can affect continuity. Neither the example nor the options guarantee that disconnects will be prevented or every frame preserved. Consult FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.

Choose by failure layer, then validate
| Approach | Failure layer | Potential use | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP reconnect options | HTTP input | Retry eligible HTTP input failures or end-of-file conditions, depending on the option and build | Does not establish RTMP output reconnection behavior |
| FIFO muxer recovery | Output path | Attempt output recovery after a temporary failure, with a configured wait | Must be tested with the actual build and destination; buffering and packet dropping can affect continuity |
These mechanisms operate at different layers; they are not interchangeable fixes. Compare protocol support, buffering and latency, packet-loss behavior, and observed recovery in a controlled test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check RTMPS when connection or SSL errors point to the endpoint
YouTube recommends RTMPS. If FFmpeg reports an SSL error or connection timeout, verify that the URL uses the rtmps protocol and the correct server from Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions also suggest trying port 443 where the URL or encoder setting permits it. This can address endpoint or protocol setup, but will not fix a stalled input, insufficient bandwidth, or an instance or network outage. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Run a representative test and monitor both ends
- Before going live: test with representative motion and audio, rather than a static or silent source if the real programme contains both.
- During the test: watch the YouTube Live Control Room health indicator and FFmpeg logs together, noting timestamps for any warning or interruption.
- Check local output: if recording an archive, confirm it continues to grow. YouTube’s live tips also recommend checking encoder errors and CPU load.
- After a change: repeat the same test conditions so you can tell whether the change affected the failure.
YouTube’s encoder guidance and live-streaming tips cover preflight and monitoring. If the evidence remains inconclusive, keep the logs, health messages, instance region and plan, and time-correlated measurements together; those details are needed to distinguish a sender, ingest, and outbound-path problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel, rather than maintain your own FFmpeg process on Vultr, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery attempts to resume if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera feed.
