Use Vultr Block Storage for Video Files in a Continuous YouTube Stream

Vultr Block Storage can hold files for a YouTube stream, but a Compute instance and streaming software must read, encode, and send them. Here’s how the pieces fit together and what continuous playback still requires.

Yes. Vultr Block Storage can hold video files for a Vultr Compute instance that sends a continuous broadcast to YouTube—but the volume is only storage. You still need to attach and mount it, run streaming software such as OBS, and configure a process to read and broadcast the files. Vultr’s documentation covers attaching and mounting storage and starting an OBS-to-YouTube stream; it does not establish a complete unattended playlist loop, 24/7 YouTube policy compliance, or guaranteed recovery from every failure.

How the parts fit together

The data path is: video files on a Block Storage volume → a Vultr Compute instance reads the files → streaming software encodes and sends a live feed → YouTube receives it. Block Storage does not encode video, create a live event, or keep an encoder running. Vultr documents attaching a volume to a same-region Compute instance and a separate Ubuntu, OBS Studio, and FFmpeg workflow for YouTube Live. Vultr Block Storage documentation · Vultr’s OBS-to-YouTube guide

Vultr does not support attaching a Block Storage volume across regions. Put the instance and volume in the same region; to use files in another region, replicate or synchronize them to a volume there. Vultr’s CLI documentation describes a --live attach option that does not restart the instance. Vultr Block Storage documentation

Attach and mount the volume safely

Vultr’s Linux mount guide, updated 24 September 2026, shows the following flow. Device names vary, so identify the new device rather than copying an example name blindly. Its partitioning and filesystem commands can destroy data on the selected device: use a new volume, or confirm the device and its contents before proceeding. Vultr Linux mount guide

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In the Vultr control panel, attach the Block Storage volume to the Compute instance in the same region. The CLI offers a --live attach option when you need to attach without restarting the instance.
  2. On the instance, run lsblk and identify the newly attached device by checking its size and existing partitions. Do not partition or format a device until you have confirmed it is the intended volume and that its data can be erased.
  3. For a new, empty volume, create a partition and filesystem following Vultr’s guide. The exact commands depend on the device and filesystem you choose; do not run destructive sample commands against a device containing needed data.
  4. Create a mount point, obtain the filesystem UUID, and add a UUID-based entry to /etc/fstab so the volume can mount at boot. Use the mount options appropriate to your filesystem and workload.
  5. Reload systemd as directed by the guide, mount the volume, and verify it with lsblk and df -h. Store or copy the video files into the mounted path used by your streaming process.

Configure the YouTube broadcast and file playback

Vultr’s streaming guide, updated 1 April 2025, describes an Ubuntu server running OBS Studio, with FFmpeg also listed in the workflow. In YouTube Studio, create or configure a live stream and copy its stream key; enter that key in the streaming software’s YouTube service settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or place it in a public script or log. Add the video source from the mounted volume, configure audio if the files include it, and start the broadcast. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming stream is healthy before relying on it. The guide describes starting a stream, but does not specify a complete mechanism for continuously advancing through a playlist of files.

For unattended playback, decide how files will be selected and repeated, and how the encoder will be started and monitored after a reboot or process failure. OBS can be configured for automatic reconnect; Vultr’s guide suggests a retry delay of three seconds or less and at least 1,000 retries. These are Vultr’s suggestions, not a guarantee that the stream will recover from every server, network, or YouTube-side failure. The reviewed Vultr material does not validate YouTube’s current rules for continuous 24/7 broadcasts or archive behavior, so check current YouTube Live requirements for your channel and stream before going live.

Vultr’s published OBS bitrate ranges

The following ranges were published in Vultr’s 2025 guide. They are vendor guidance, not a statement of current YouTube recommendations; check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the needs of your content before choosing settings.

Output Vultr-published bitrate range
480p at 30 fps 500–2,000 Kbps
720p at 30 fps 1,500–4,500 Kbps
720p at 60 fps 2,500–6,500 Kbps
1080p at 30 fps 3,000–6,500 Kbps
1080p at 60 fps 4,500–9,500 Kbps
2160p at 30 fps 13,000–34,000 Kbps
2160p at 60 fps 20,000–51,000 Kbps

Vultr’s guide suggests 720p for a server with at least two vCPUs and warns that CPU use above 90% may lead to dropped frames and buffering. Monitor CPU and network bandwidth while streaming; those figures are cautions and suggestions in Vultr’s recipe, not independently tested thresholds or universal requirements. Choose HDD or NVMe Block Storage by workload

For a video-read workload, sustained sequential read throughput under your chosen playback and caching pattern matters more directly than headline IOPS alone. Vultr’s published figures are performance targets, not guaranteed minimums. Observed results can vary with I/O size and pattern, queueing, caching, parallel requests, and the instance’s CPU and network resources.

Vultr Block Storage class Published sustained target (May 2026 benchmark) Published target (December 2025 support page) What to check
HDD Block 500 IOPS; 100 MB/s 500 IOPS; 100 MiB/s Measure sequential reads using the expected file sizes and playback pattern.
NVMe Block 10,000 IOPS; 400 MB/s 10,000 IOPS; 400 MiB/s Measure the same workload; do not assume NVMe is necessary for one stream.

The two pages express throughput units differently: the May 2026 benchmark uses MB/s, while the December 2025 support page uses MiB/s. Vultr describes short bursts above sustained targets—up to 150% for up to 60 seconds in its May 2026 benchmark, and up to 50% above listed targets for about a minute on the December 2025 support page. Treat these as vendor descriptions of burst behavior, not sustained capacity. Vultr’s benchmark reports results from its own fio tests across block sizes from 4 KB to 4 MB and varied read/write mixes and queue-depth/job settings; for example, it reports about 10,000 IOPS and 40 MiB/s for NVMe at 4 KB blocks, and about 6,000 IOPS and 381 MiB/s at 64 KB. Those are vendor benchmark results, not independent tests. Check current regional availability and purchase pricing, and handle backup, redundancy, and recovery separately. Size the server and transfer capacity

Vultr’s 2025 OBS guide lists a server prerequisite example of at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. This is Vultr’s recipe, not a current universal minimum or a guarantee for every resolution, encoder, or continuous workload. The instance must have room to run the encoder and enough outbound transfer capacity for the stream; monitor CPU and bandwidth under the actual settings you intend to use. Check copyright and channel rules before looping videos

Having a file on your own volume does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other material in each recording, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and channel policies before scheduling continuous playback. The Vultr material describes server setup and stream encoding; it does not determine whether a particular video is permitted, whether a channel qualifies for 24/7 streaming, or how YouTube will handle archives and reused content.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The video path is missing after reboot: check lsblk, df -h, the UUID in /etc/fstab, and whether the mount completed. Use the UUID-based persistent mount described in Vultr’s guide.
  • The volume does not appear on the instance: confirm it is attached to that Compute instance and in the same region, then inspect devices with lsblk. Do not format a similarly sized device until you have verified its identity.
  • The stream will not connect: check that the YouTube stream key and service settings are correct, the live stream is configured in YouTube Studio, and the instance has network connectivity. If you rotate the key, update the streaming software too.
  • Playback stutters or frames drop: inspect OBS statistics, CPU load, network bandwidth, and storage reads. Lower the output resolution or bitrate if the server cannot sustain the selected workload; test the chosen volume with representative sequential reads rather than relying only on published peak targets.
  • The stream stops after an encoder or network interruption: configure and test automatic reconnect, then arrange process monitoring and startup behavior for your chosen playback setup. Vultr’s retry settings are suggestions; the reviewed guide does not define a complete unattended playlist and recovery system.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids managing a server, attached volume, mount, and encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attach Vultr Block Storage to a Compute instance in another region?

No. Vultr says cross-region attachment is not supported; use a volume in the instance’s region or replicate the files to a volume in the other region.

Does Vultr’s documentation establish that a 24/7 YouTube stream is allowed?

No. Its streaming guide describes starting an OBS broadcast, not current YouTube rules for continuous streams, archives, or channel eligibility. Check YouTube’s current requirements for your channel.
