To stream several pre-recorded videos in order from a Hetzner server to YouTube Live, run a playlist or playback process on the server, feed its continuous output to an encoder, and send that encoder feed to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest, keep the stream key secret, and test the actual files and transitions before relying on the setup for a broadcast.
How the setup works
The workflow has three parts: media storage and playback on the Hetzner machine, an encoder that produces one continuous audiovisual feed, and YouTube Live ingest. The playlist layer determines which video plays next; the encoder sends the resulting feed to YouTube. YouTube’s setup documentation describes connecting an encoder with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room: YouTube encoder setup.
- Upload the video files to the server and arrange them in the intended order.
- Configure a playback or playlist process to advance from one file to the next and provide a continuous output.
- Configure an encoder to send that output to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for your YouTube stream.
- Preview and monitor the stream in Live Control Room, especially at file transitions.
The exact playback and encoding configuration depends on each file’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, container and timestamps, as well as whether transitions must be seamless. There is no universal command that can be assumed to work across all media. Validate the chosen implementation with representative files before scheduling a long broadcast.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for the event or stream configuration. Use the endpoint YouTube supplies; do not guess an ingest URL.
- Store the key in a private encoder configuration or secret store. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or log. YouTube describes the key as similar to a password and address.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport with TLS. Its instructions for obtaining the RTMPS URL are here: YouTube RTMPS ingest instructions. If the encoder reports an SSL error, check that the URL begins with rtmps, not rtmp; YouTube notes that explicitly specifying port 443 can resolve some SSL errors.

Choose encoder output settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder guide as the baseline, then match the output to your source, encoder and available network capacity. The guide lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular source, encoder or server connection will be suitable. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source rather than assuming upscaling improves it.
- Set CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds, following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Select a supported video and audio codec that the playback and encoder chain can handle consistently.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the actual preview; adjust settings if the feed is unstable or quality is poor.
Prepare the Hetzner server and network
The server must remain available for the duration of the broadcast, with enough resources to read the media and run the playback and encoding processes. Check the chosen server’s current specifications and traffic allowance for its product and location before estimating costs.

Firewall and outbound access
Hetzner Cloud Firewall documentation says that with no firewall rules configured, inbound traffic is blocked and outbound traffic is permitted. The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube, so this workflow does not inherently require exposing a public inbound streaming port. If you add restrictive custom outbound rules, allow the server to connect to the YouTube ingest endpoint. Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls have no charge. See Hetzner Cloud Firewalls.
Traffic and bandwidth planning
Outgoing traffic from the server scales with the encoder bitrate and stream duration. Estimate it using the actual output bitrate and expected broadcast hours; viewers’ YouTube playback is not served from your Hetzner host in this workflow. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB of included monthly traffic for CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations, while allowances vary by server type and location elsewhere. The documentation page was last changed on 2024-05-21, so confirm the current allowance for the exact server and location in Hetzner’s pricing view before planning a recurring stream: Hetzner Cloud server traffic information.

Test the playlist before going live
- Choose representative files, including the formats and audio characteristics most likely to cause compatibility problems.
- Run the playback and encoder chain and confirm that each file advances in the intended order.
- Watch the YouTube preview through at least one file transition. Check for a black frame, frozen image, missing audio, audio discontinuity or a stalled feed.
- Review Live Control Room’s stream health and audio/video quality indicators, then verify that the event is accessible through its watch page.
- Only rely on the configuration for a scheduled broadcast after it behaves as expected with the real media files and network path.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream health: YouTube encoder setup and troubleshooting.
Operate and end the broadcast
Keep the server’s playlist and encoder processes running throughout the broadcast, and monitor both the server processes and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Plan how you will detect a stopped process or dropped ingest and restart it; the exact monitoring and restart mechanism depends on the software you choose.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for streams lasting longer than 12 hours. At the end, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for your configuration. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect or reports an SSL error | Copy the current URL from Live Control Room; confirm it uses rtmps rather than rtmp. YouTube notes that specifying port 443 can resolve some SSL errors. Check that custom outbound firewall rules permit the connection. |
| Stream starts, but video or audio fails at a playlist transition | Check the formats, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams and timestamps of the files on either side of the transition. Test representative files and revise the playback or encoding configuration for the actual media. |
| Stream health degrades during a long broadcast | Check the encoder’s output bitrate against the server’s outbound capacity and the chosen plan’s traffic allowance. Inspect YouTube’s health indicators and the server-side playback and encoder processes. |
| Stream key no longer works or may have been exposed | Verify the key in Live Control Room. If it was exposed, reset it there and replace the value in the private encoder configuration. |
| The expected archive is missing | Check the stream duration. YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish the same behavior for longer streams. |
