Find the first point in the path where the stream becomes unstable before changing bitrate, SRS settings, or VPS size. Trace it from encoder (often OBS) to SRS on the VPS and then to YouTube; if only viewers report buffering, the fault may be in playback rather than the publishing path.
Identify which part of the stream is stuttering
“Stuttering” can describe different failures. Check the encoder, SRS, YouTube Live Control Room, and viewer playback separately. The earliest error is usually the most useful clue.
- OBS reports network-dropped frames: OBS cannot reliably send the configured bitrate to its remote destination. The OBS Project describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the set bitrate (OBS connection troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024).
- OBS reports encoding lag or skipped frames: investigate encoding or rendering performance rather than treating it as a network-drop problem.
- SRS reports publisher disconnects or forwarding problems: inspect the OBS-to-SRS connection and the SRS-to-YouTube forward separately.
- YouTube reports stream-health warnings: note their timing and compare them with OBS statistics and SRS logs.
- Only viewers report buffering: the stream may have reached YouTube successfully; viewer playback conditions can differ from ingest health.
Record the time of the symptom and the first warning in each place. Avoid changing multiple settings at once, or you may lose the evidence that identifies the failing leg.
Check encoder settings and sustainable upload capacity
Confirm the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval configured in OBS. YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS. Its recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

For H.264, YouTube’s current table lists 1080p60 at 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended, and 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are encoder bitrate figures, not recommended VPS CPU or RAM specifications. Verify the live table at YouTube’s live encoder settings before relying on exact values.
- In OBS, review the output and video settings and note the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval being sent.
- Run an upload test from the encoder’s network. Choose a bitrate that the connection can sustain reliably, not merely one below a brief peak result.
- Test with motion and audio resembling the real programme; a static screen is not a representative load for moving footage.
- Watch OBS’s Stats window and YouTube stream health during the test. If network-dropped frames rise, lower the bitrate for a controlled trial and check whether the symptom changes.
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes live streams for viewers. That does not remove the need for a stable feed into YouTube: viewers cannot receive a clean source if the encoder-to-relay or relay-to-ingest connection is failing.

Diagnose the OBS-to-SRS connection
If OBS’s network-dropped frames increase while publishing to SRS, focus first on the encoder’s upstream connection and route to the VPS. A lower bitrate that stops the drops points toward a capacity or stability issue, but does not by itself identify whether the cause is the local connection, ISP, route, or destination host.
- Verify that OBS is using the intended SRS publishing endpoint and stream key. Check for accidental whitespace or a mismatched key if publishing fails or repeatedly disconnects.
- Compare configured bitrate with stable upstream capacity, then repeat at a lower bitrate.
- If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, try wired networking as a diagnostic. It is not proof that Wi-Fi is the cause.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or network/security optimization software if these affect the route; restore protections after the test and change only one factor at a time.
- Try another destination/server where practical. A difference helps isolate the route or destination but does not establish a root cause on its own.
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames typically involve conditions outside OBS itself, including network, software, hardware, or ISP factors. Distinguish network drops from encoding or rendering lag before adjusting encoder performance settings.

Check SRS reception, forwarding, and timestamps
SRS supports RTMP publishing from OBS or FFmpeg and can forward streams. Confirm that SRS receives a continuous publisher before investigating its outbound connection to YouTube. If SRS input is stable but its forward is not, examine forwarding logs, host networking, and the relevant RTMP configuration.
- Inspect SRS logs around the recorded symptom for publisher disconnects, reconnects, or forwarding errors.
- Compare SRS ingress and egress rates if your monitoring exposes them. Stable ingress with disrupted egress narrows the investigation to forwarding, the VPS network, or the route to YouTube.
- Review the applicable SRS RTMP queue and timestamp-jitter settings only if measurements or logs suggest queue pressure, dropped GOPs, or timestamp problems.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same metrics before and after. Do not toggle jitter controls or copy queue values as a generic stutter fix.
SRS documents live queue and timestamp-jitter controls, but their suitability depends on the symptom and configuration. The SRS RTMP configuration page is marked v7.0 unstable; it can help identify available controls, but that label is not a recommendation to use that version in production. Measure the VPS while reproducing the issue
Do not infer that the VPS is too small just because viewers see stutter. Observe the host during the failure and relate its condition to SRS ingress and egress. SRS documentation describes deployment on cloud virtual machines and the use of process status and logs, but the reviewed official material does not establish a minimum VPS size for one forwarded stream.
- CPU: check for saturation or throttling during the event, especially if SRS is doing more than forwarding.
- Memory: look for memory pressure that coincides with instability.
- Network: inspect outbound capacity, packet loss, and interface errors; compare ingress and egress rates if available.
- Process and logs: confirm SRS remains active and correlate log events with OBS and YouTube warnings.
There is no evidence-based universal vCPU, RAM, or bandwidth figure to prescribe here. Requirements depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, SRS features, and the provider’s network and allocation policies. Consider a different VPS location or provider only when measurements implicate route, resource limits, or network capacity—not from CPU-core counts or price alone.

Isolate YouTube ingest with a direct-publish test
When practical, publish the same encoder configuration directly to YouTube for a controlled comparison. Keep the programme, encoder settings, and test conditions as similar as possible, and compare OBS statistics with YouTube stream health.
- Direct publishing is smooth, but SRS forwarding stutters: focus next on SRS forwarding, VPS egress, and the route from the VPS to YouTube.
- Both paths show network drops or YouTube warnings: revisit encoder bitrate, the encoder’s upload capacity, and the destination connection.
- OBS and YouTube look healthy, but some viewers buffer: investigate playback separately instead of resizing the VPS without evidence.
This comparison narrows the likely failing part of the path; it does not guarantee a single root cause. Record each trial’s first warning and change one variable at a time.
