A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable live stream. Check the chain in order: where FFmpeg publishes, whether MediaMTX has the expected path and publisher, whether that path forwards to YouTube with the current ingest URL and key, and whether the outgoing stream contains both audio and video. YouTube can silently reject a video-only stream.
First locate the failing link
There are two separate connections to distinguish: FFmpeg may publish to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX may then forward that path to YouTube. Alternatively, FFmpeg may be sending directly to YouTube. The final output URL in the complete FFmpeg command tells you which arrangement you have; do not change the forwarding configuration until you know which one is intended.
- FFmpeg-to-MediaMTX: the command’s output should target the MediaMTX host, protocol, and path you expect.
- MediaMTX-to-YouTube: the active MediaMTX path needs a forwarding destination and valid YouTube stream key.
- YouTube ingest: YouTube must accept the incoming connection and media tracks before the stream appears live.
Process status alone establishes none of these later stages. Without your command, configuration, logs, and Live Control Room status, the symptom cannot identify one specific cause.
1. Confirm FFmpeg’s destination and path
Read the entire FFmpeg command, especially its final output URL and format option. MediaMTX documents an RTMP publishing example ending in -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream. In that example, localhost is the MediaMTX host from FFmpeg’s point of view, and mystream is the path. If FFmpeg runs on another machine or container, localhost may not refer to the MediaMTX server.

- Check that the output URL uses the protocol and host of the intended destination.
- Compare the path in that URL with the path MediaMTX is configured to serve or forward. A typo or different path can leave the expected YouTube route without a publisher.
- Establish whether the command targets MediaMTX or YouTube directly. A MediaMTX forwarding rule will not help if FFmpeg bypasses MediaMTX.

2. Check whether MediaMTX sees the publisher and path
Inspect MediaMTX logs at the time FFmpeg starts. Follow the sequence of configuration loading, publisher connection, path activity, forwarding attempts, disconnects, and errors. The logs help identify the boundary that failed; a process that remains alive can still be publishing to the wrong path or failing to connect downstream.

- Check the configured log destination: MediaMTX supports stdout, file, and syslog.
- Look for a publisher connection on the expected path and for any immediate disconnect or path error.
- If the current output is insufficient, temporarily raise
logLeveltodebug, reproduce the issue, and correlate the additional messages with the attempt. - After configuration edits, validate the file using MediaMTX’s documented
--validate-confoption before restarting or relying on the change.
The configuration reference describes the latest release represented on that page as v1.21.1; that does not establish which version you have installed. Check your own installed version and use the matching configuration documentation. See the MediaMTX configuration reference.
3. Verify the YouTube forwarding destination and key
If MediaMTX is meant to forward the path, inspect the forwarding rule attached to that path. MediaMTX’s YouTube example combines an ingest URL and stream key with #. Use the current ingest address and key shown for your channel in YouTube Live Control Room rather than copying a hostname from an example: the MediaMTX guide warns that its sample YouTube hostname may have changed since the guide was updated.

- Confirm the forwarding rule applies to the same path receiving FFmpeg’s publication.
- Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room and verify that they are combined in the format required by the MediaMTX guide.
- Consider the guide’s recommendation to change the scheme to
rtmps://to encrypt the connection in transit. - Keep the stream key private; do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts.
YouTube Help also instructs creators to copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder and documents RTMPS support. Stream keys and ingest details are account-specific and can change. See MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide and YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
4. Make sure both audio and video reach YouTube
Inspect the media that MediaMTX forwards, not just the source file or FFmpeg process. MediaMTX’s “Forward streams” documentation states: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” A video-only output can therefore look like a forwarding problem even when the connection is otherwise active.

Check that the outgoing stream contains an audio track as well as video, and confirm that the track is present on the path being forwarded. If FFmpeg creates or maps the output streams, review its input selection and mapping rather than assuming the source’s audio was included.

If logs show MediaMTX failing to connect to YouTube or timing out, first recheck the current destination URL and key in Live Control Room. Then investigate connectivity from the machine running MediaMTX. YouTube Help advises checking the encoder documentation when a connection times out.

A timeout is evidence of a connection problem, not proof of a particular cause. Without the deployment details and actual logs, it is not possible to identify DNS, firewall, TLS, routing, or account conditions as the culprit. Avoid changing unrelated network settings based on the timeout alone; use the specific error and the host’s connectivity checks to narrow it down.
