Start by checking which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the route cannot sustain; rendering lag or encoder overload points instead to OBS struggling to render or encode. The dropped-frames counter alone does not identify whether the limitation is OBS, the VPS, the route, or YouTube’s ingest settings. Compare OBS’s counters and session log with YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing several settings at once.
Identify the kind of frames OBS is losing
OBS Project defines the network symptom this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes a connection problem—not proof that YouTube or OVHcloud is at fault. YouTube’s ingest server is the remote endpoint; it is not an OBS-operated server.
- Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot reliably deliver the configured stream to the remote server. Investigate the bitrate and network path.
- Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames in time. Check system or GPU load and the OBS log.
- Encoding lag: the encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough. Check system or encoder capacity and the OBS log.
OBS treats connection instability and encoding/rendering performance as different problems. Its encoding-performance guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate when performance indicators point to a rendering or encoding bottleneck. Do not treat a network setting as the fix if those are the indicators that are rising.
Establish a useful baseline before changing settings
Run a representative test stream, ideally with the kind of movement and audio you expect to send. Record the time and the following details so you can compare each test with the original instead of guessing from a single result.

- OBS’s dropped-frames percentage and its rendering-lag and encoding-lag indicators.
- The OBS log from that session.
- Whether OBS runs on the OVHcloud VPS or on a separate local computer. The computer running OBS is the source of the outbound stream.
- The VPS region and plan, if OBS runs on the VPS.
- Output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, stream protocol, and the selected YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Whether the problem is continuous or intermittent, and the times it occurs.
- YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and their timestamps.
Test whether the configured bitrate is too high for the route
First make a controlled bitrate reduction while leaving the other settings unchanged. OBS’s connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guarantee: a general speed test does not necessarily represent stable throughput from this VPS to the YouTube ingest endpoint at the time of the stream.
- Note the current video bitrate and OBS network dropped-frames percentage during a representative period.
- Reduce the video bitrate, then repeat the test under similar conditions without also changing the codec, resolution, frame rate, or endpoint.
- Compare the counters and timestamps. If network drops improve materially, the previous setting was likely too close to or above the reliable capacity of that path. If they do not, continue diagnosing rather than repeatedly lowering quality without evidence.
For context, YouTube’s encoder settings page lists the following recommended H.264 ingest rates. These are recommendations for the specified codec and output—not measurements of an OVHcloud-to-YouTube route or a promise that a particular VPS can sustain them.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps (Google / YouTube encoder settings page, current page crawled in 2026) |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps (Google / YouTube encoder settings page, current page crawled in 2026) |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps (Google / YouTube encoder settings page, current page crawled in 2026) |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps (Google / YouTube encoder settings page, current page crawled in 2026) |
Choose the recommendation for the actual ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists different ranges for H.265 and AV1, so do not use the H.264 row as a generic target for another codec. A reasonable configuration still needs headroom on the real route: matching YouTube’s recommended rate does not show that the VPS-to-ingest path can sustain it.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health
Before blaming the route, check that the output format matches YouTube’s current encoder requirements. YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube encoder-settings table for the selected codec and output rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup.

Inspect the timestamped messages beside the Health Indicator. YouTube errors can identify a bitrate, format, audio/video setting, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe-frequency mismatch. Resolve an explicit ingest-setting error first. If there is no matching YouTube error while OBS’s network dropped counter rises, proceed to test the path and capacity.
Keep the stream key private and use the key configured for the intended YouTube stream. A key or stream configuration mistake is not fixed by increasing bandwidth. Separately, ensure that you have the rights needed for the video and audio you broadcast and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies. A healthy ingest indicator confirms neither copyright clearance nor eligibility to monetize reused material.

Find out whether the symptom follows the endpoint or the VPS route
OBS recommends trying a different server and, where appropriate, a different streaming service. For a YouTube diagnosis, compare a different available YouTube ingest endpoint if your setup permits it. Change one variable at a time and keep the output settings constant where possible. If a test succeeds through another endpoint or service, that is evidence of a destination- or path-specific difference; by itself, it does not prove that YouTube, OVHcloud, or any one provider caused the fault.
OVHcloud documents several network tools in its network diagnostics guidance. Use them as supporting observations, with timestamps and a VPS location that match the incident:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Looking Glass: inspect routes and routing tables from a data center.
- Proof: run a network speed test.
- Smokeping: observe ICMP reachability, latency, and path changes.
- Weathermap: view backbone link load.
These tools do not establish the health of the precise YouTube ingest flow by themselves. A single speed test or traceroute is not enough to declare a route faulty; compare repeated observations with the time of the drops, the OBS log, and tests using a different endpoint.

Check the VPS offer and the machine running OBS
OVHcloud’s VPS offer page shows public bandwidth by offer and describes traffic as unlimited. Check the current offer for the exact plan and region you use: the displayed bandwidth is plan- and market-specific. Unlimited traffic is not unlimited instantaneous bandwidth, nor a guarantee of steady throughput over a particular route to YouTube.
If evidence points to the VPS itself, inspect its network configuration and firewall. OVHcloud’s VPS FAQ covers bandwidth and security topics, but the fact that a VPS has a firewall does not establish that it is causing dropped frames. Look for a specific configuration or log indication before changing security rules.
Be precise about where OBS runs. If it runs entirely on the VPS, that VPS’s outbound network path carries the stream; home Wi-Fi, router, and cabling are not that outbound path. If OBS runs on a local computer and the VPS hosts only media or control components, test the local computer’s actual connection instead. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi, and modem/router/cable hardware as possible causes in setups where those components are on the stream’s path. Check only the components that apply.

Use OBS network options as targeted tests, not assumed fixes
OBS’s connection guide documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing. If the OBS host is Windows, test relevant options one at a time and compare the same counters. OBS also documents binding to the default IP and trying IPv4-only as a reversible diagnostic test. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Dynamic bitrate can reduce the output bitrate when a connection cannot keep up, which may reduce visible network drops by lowering quality. OBS describes it as a workaround, not a resolution of the underlying connection problem. Use it only if variable quality is preferable to dropped frames, and continue investigating the capacity or route issue.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to test next |
|---|---|
| Network dropped frames rise, while rendering and encoding indicators remain clear | Reduce bitrate as a controlled test, inspect YouTube Health Indicator messages, then compare endpoints and repeated route observations. |
| Rendering lag rises | Use OBS’s log and system/GPU indicators to investigate rendering load; consider reducing output resolution or frame rate. |
| Encoding lag rises | Investigate encoder and system capacity using OBS’s log; a bitrate reduction alone may not address an encoder that cannot keep up. |
| YouTube reports an explicit format, bitrate, frame-rate, audio/video, or keyframe error | Correct the indicated output or ingest setting, then repeat the test before drawing conclusions about the route. |
| Drops improve at a lower bitrate | Keep the lower setting for a stability test and compare it with the current YouTube recommendation for your codec and output; the original rate may have exceeded dependable path capacity. |
| Only one endpoint or service test shows drops | Repeat controlled comparisons. The difference narrows the investigation to endpoint or path behavior but does not alone assign fault. |
| OBS runs on the VPS, but tests focus on home Wi-Fi or cabling | Test the VPS’s outbound path instead; home network equipment is not carrying a stream sent directly by OBS on the VPS. |
When to escalate
If network drops continue after a controlled bitrate reduction and endpoint comparison, send OVHcloud support the evidence needed to investigate a time- and route-specific issue:
- Incident timestamps, VPS region and plan, and the affected YouTube destination.
- The OBS session log and the recorded dropped-frame, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag indicators.
- Output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, protocol, and selected ingest endpoint.
- Repeated route, latency, and throughput observations from the affected period, including which tests changed the result.
If OBS actually runs on a local computer and checks of its software and hardware do not resolve a last-mile connection issue, OBS recommends contacting the ISP. Do not present one traceroute or speed test as proof that a provider’s route is faulty.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing on YouTube continuously, rather than to broadcast a live camera or troubleshoot an interactive OBS production, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
