Raspberry Pi 5 vs. Cloud VM: How to Calculate the Monthly Cost of a 24/7 YouTube Video Loop

A fair Pi 5 versus cloud VM comparison starts with the output architecture. Learn what to measure and which costs to include before naming a monthly winner.

There is no defensible single monthly-cost winner without specifying what the loop does, what viewers see, and what electricity and cloud services cost where you are. A Raspberry Pi 5 playing YouTube on a local screen and a cloud VM supplying or rendering video are different setups. Compare the Pi’s purchase and measured electricity with the VM’s compute, storage, and network charges—and make sure both architectures deliver the same result.

First define what “a 24/7 YouTube video loop” means

A Pi connected to a screen can play YouTube in a browser for someone physically near that screen. A VM in a cloud provider’s data center has no local display by default. It might host media, remotely render a desktop that a local client displays, or perform some other role; those designs have different costs and requirements.

If you mean keeping a YouTube channel’s live broadcast running continuously from prerecorded video, that is another architecture again. It is not the same as watching a YouTube video on a screen. Choose the intended output before comparing bills.

  • Local playback: the Pi, display, network connection, and player are part of the setup. A VM does not replace the display unless you arrange a way to deliver its output to a viewer.
  • Cloud-hosted or cloud-rendered output: specify whether the VM serves media, renders a remote desktop, or sends a live stream, and include the services needed to deliver that output.
  • Continuous YouTube channel stream: include the streaming method and any required transfer or hosting costs, rather than treating a VM’s compute price as the complete bill.

What belongs in each monthly cost

Raspberry Pi 5

Count electricity for the complete operating setup, not just the board: include the screen, power supply, storage, network equipment attributable to the loop, and any other peripherals. Add the board and setup purchase separately. If you want to express that initial cost as a monthly amount, state the ownership period used to amortize it; that is an accounting choice, not a recurring electricity charge.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Cloud VM

Count the selected instance, persistent storage, network transfer, and any other services the output architecture needs. Record the provider, region, operating system, billing basis, and expected usage. A low compute rate is not a full monthly total, and a VM that only controls playback is not equivalent to one that serves or streams video.

Measure the Pi instead of guessing its playback power

Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply for Pi 5 and reports 800mA typical active current for the bare board. That current figure is not a measured wattage for continuous YouTube playback: the voltage and operating conditions matter, and actual draw depends on peripherals. The Pi 5 announcement’s figure of around 12W refers to peak power under particularly intensive workloads, not a 24/7 playback average.

The H.264 playback table in Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation covers older Pi models, not Pi 5, so it does not establish Pi 5’s average power for this use. For the relevant supply and hardware guidance, consult Raspberry Pi’s computer documentation. Measure the complete setup you plan to run instead of substituting a board specification for an observed wall draw.

Calculate a comparable monthly figure

Use the same month and uptime assumption for each option. For example, a 30-day month at continuous operation is 24 Ă— 30 = 720 hours. This is a calculation convention, not a promise that either setup will run uninterrupted.

  1. Fix the output architecture. State whether the Pi plays to a local display, the VM serves media, a remote desktop is shown locally, or a cloud service sends a live broadcast. List every required device and service.
  2. Measure the Pi at the wall. Run the intended resolution, browser or player, network connection, peripherals, and display. Record the average whole-setup power in watts over representative operation.
  3. Calculate Pi electricity. Convert measured watts to kilowatts, then multiply by operating hours and your local electricity price per kWh: kW Ă— hours Ă— price per kWh. Use the same billing period and local tax treatment you use elsewhere in the comparison.
  4. Show Pi capital cost separately. Get current local prices for the board and required setup components. If amortizing, state the chosen ownership period and divide the initial purchase cost across that period; do not describe the result as a measured recurring bill.
  5. Price the cloud design for its region. Choose a VM that fits the actual workload and use the provider’s current calculator or pricing page. Include persistent storage, expected network transfer, and any additional service necessary to deliver the output.
  6. Compare totals and assumptions. Present monthly electricity and amortized hardware for the Pi separately from the VM’s compute, storage, and transfer. Include currency, tax treatment, month length, uptime, and geography so readers can reproduce the comparison.

What the available figures cannot settle

The published references do not establish the current local Pi 5 purchase price, a Pi 5’s average power during YouTube playback, the display’s energy use, your electricity tariff, or a selected cloud architecture and region. Nor do the example VM rates include a complete workload bill. Without those inputs, stating that either option is categorically cheaper would be false precision.
